Pol ished:Polishing a stone heightens the markings, veins and

colouring and gives the stone a shiny and reflectivesurface with high gloss. The degree of polish is mainlydetermined by its mineral elements and by its texture.Not every natural stone can be polished.

Honed :The honed surface is smooth and ideal for indoorflooring surfaces. It is more matt than polished stoneand looks great where a contemporary style iswanted. It has the advantage of being less slipperythan the polished surface and so is great for bathroomand kitchen floors.

An t i qued o r Tum b l ed :The surface of the stone is given an aged appearanceusually by tumbling in sand. This technique issuccessful with most types of stone and creates a

time-worn, rustic look.

Brushed :The tiles are generally tumbled and then machine-brushed with wire bristles to create a surface that iscomfortable to walk on barefoot, easy to maintain andless sensitive to scratches.

GRANI TEGranite comes in a variety of rich colours and is generally the most dense of natural stones,

making it a popular choice for kitchen worktops and bathroom vanity tops as well as flooring.Provided it is sealed with a good quality impregnator (see fixings, finishes and adhesives), it isexcellent for a long, low-maintenance usage.

LI MESTONELimestone is a sedimentary rock formed from compressed plant and animal remains at the

bottom of lakes and seas. The Amarestone collection includes a range of colours from off-whiteand creamy beiges through to blues, greys and blacks. The hardness and density of limestonecan vary widely and the simple rule is that the paler the limestone, the softer and more porous itis likely to be. We can advise on which limestone would be suitable for your intended use.

MARBLEMarble is formed from limestone that has undergone extreme heat and pressure within theearths core. Its resulting fine crystalline structure allows it to be highly polished but it is alsoavailable in a variety of other finishes including honed and tumbled. There is a huge choice ofcolours and it is highly durable and suitable for use throughout the home.

TRAVERTI NETravertine is an extremely hardwearing stone that has been used for floors and walls sinceRoman times. It is formed from hot springs bubbling up through underground limestone whichresults in the characteristic small holes in the stone. These holes may be filled at the quarry and

the tiles honed to give a smooth, matt contemporary look or they can be left unfilled andtumbled to give a more rustic appearance. Like marble, travertine can be used throughout thehome.

PHYLLI TEPhylllite (Riverstone) is approximately 650 million years old and started life as slate. Heat andpressure within the earths core transformed the slate into phyllite in much the same way aslimestone is transformed into marble. This results in a dense material that it is much harder andthus more durable than normal slate. It has a near 3-D quality and reflects the light displayingsubtle veining that has an occasional streak of cream quartz. The hard minerals offer goodresistance to abrasion providing a surface that is easy to maintain in domestic and commercialenvironments. Riverstone offers good all round resistance to natural weathering effects and is a

good choice for internal and external flooring, swimming pools, vanity tops and bespoke items.

I n s t a l l a t i o n :All natural stone, even polished granite, is porous and should be sealed to preventstaining. We suggest you apply the first coat of stone impregnator (commonly referred

to as a sealer) when the stone has been fixed but before it has been grouted. Thismakes any grout on the surface of the stone easy to clean off. The second coat can beapplied once the grout has fully dried. To ensure that the grout as well as the stone is

protected, a third coat can be applied after the previous coat has completely dried andbeen absorbed into the stone. This will usually take 12-24 hours depending uponconditions.

Amarestone recommends and stocks stone impregnators produced by Fila, an Italiancompany specialising in products for the care and maintenance of stone and othernatural materials. Fi la MP90 is excellent for the protection of polished surfaces ofmarble, granite and the harder limestones. For unpolished stone, e.g. antiqued,tumbled or honed surfaces, F i l a Hydro rep and Fi la Fob has been speciallyformulated to provide the highest level of protection against stains caused by water

and grease. Fila MP90, Hydrorep and Fob do not alter the appearance of the stone.

To add further protection to the stone, waxes can be applied to give a matt, satin orgloss finish.

Rou t in e Clean in g:Once the stone has been properly sealed, you will find that it is easy to keep clean by

mopping with a dilute solution of Fi lac leaner . Filacleaner does not remove wax orsealer and will not damage the surface of the stone.

If the floor has been previously waxed, a little liquid wax can occasionally be added to

the water to help maintain the required sheen and provide extra protection.
