Chairperson’s Message

It is my pleasure to report that this year, World Alzheimer’s Month was observed all over the country in an unprecedented manner. The chapters have to be applauded at the novels methods adopted to make the theme ‘Remember me’ linger on in the minds of the general public. Though different channels and by holding a range of events and activities, the programmes and new initiatives have generated a lot of media attention.

Some of the notable events were the inauguration of the Day care centre and the walk of Fame by the Guwahati chapter; the flashing of ‘I am Dementia friend’ at electronic traffic tickers organised by the Mumbai chapter, the memory walk in Mizoram where the oldest participant was 85 years and the youngest just a year old, a campaign launched in Bangalore called ‘A Battle to remember’ and an initiative to make Bangalore a dementia friendly city by 2025, a Memory Ride on bicycles in Hyderabad and the inauguration of a memory clinic at PVS Lakeshore hospital in Kochi. Our programmes grabbed international eyeballs with the picture of the Kolkata chapter’s event held at the Indian museum being published in the World Alzheimer’s Month issue of ADI’s newsletter.

Since I was in Singapore during World Alzheimer’s week, I took the opportunity of taking part in the awareness programme that was held at the main lobby of Changi Hospital. There were seven stalls showing various activities like music therapy, giving voice through art and recipe for active aging. All persons who came in were given a simple questionnaire on facts of dementia and were asked to answer them. While visiting the stalls, the questions were verified and clarified wherever necessary. As an incentive for persons to visit all the stalls, a goody bag was given to those whose questionnaire was stamped at all the stalls. A huge snake and ladder game where right answers took you up ladders and wrong answers got consumed by snakes was another interesting game that persons enjoyed playing.

Our next major event is the ARDSI annual conference being hosted by the Mysuru Chapter on the 10th and 11th of December. A cordial invitation to all to participate and make the conference a success.

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), as the organization which unites the Alzheimer’s associations across the world has clear objectives for celebrating September as the World

stAlzheimer Month (WAM) and September 21 as World Alzheimer Day (WAD). It is estimated that there is one new case of dementia worldwide every three seconds.

The theme for WAM 2016 was ‘Remember Me’. This gave an opportunity for everyone to remember their loved ones or whom they have cared for or know of with dementia, alive or who have passed away. Quite often people tend to see ‘the person with dementia’ but forget there is a person behind the dementia who had a very meaningful life. This theme gave us an opportunity to destigmatise dementia and have a better understanding of the various aspects associated with the condition. It is very encouraging to read the reports of the WAM celebration by various chapters across the country which was inclusive of various sections of the society with a wide variety of activities mainly focusing on awareness programmes organized around the central theme. It is also heartening to hear various chapters also took this opportunity to launch new services.

It was appreciable several chapters organized their events aiming at becoming Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC). The term DFC has been used more widely across print and social media in recent times which definitely is a good sign. However we also should be mindful DFC campaign aims for targets further than awareness programmes. DFC programme aims for specific targets to be achieved in a time frame and are measurable. The goals would also involve a wide variety of programmes including service development, promoting formal and informal supportive networks in the community, improving physical environments, supporting volunteering etc. Clearly September is the time where there is a peak of dementia care related activities across many parts of the country. However let us also plan sustainable activities to develop services and improve care across India in both rural and urban areas which are ongoing through out the year.

Let us also take this opportunity to remind the readers the first issue in the New Year is a special issue on young onset dementia and please send any articles or materials suitable for publication.

Bangalore Chapter in association with Nightingales Medical Trust (NMT) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) organized an insightfulcampaign at Cubbon Park, Bangalore to mark WAM 2016. ‘A Battle to Remember’– the title of the campaign was an initiative towards making Bangalore a Dementia Friendly City by raising awareness about dementia, building appropriate support systems, educating, training and advocating the rights of caregivers and families touched by the disease The stigma and myths around dementia, which pose a challenge towards its prevention and management, was the focus of the campaign. Geriatric Yoga, Challenge your Brain activities,

Rural Games, Street Play and Awareness Walk were the highlights of the day. The target group for this campaign was the 300 plus morning walkers/ joggers which included middle aged citizens and senior citizens. Volunteers went around the park, educating the walkers about the event and the cause; walkers were also asked to pin up a purple ribbon on their arms as a sign of their support towards the cause. The campaign had an early morning start with a free session on Geriatric Yoga by a team from NIMHANS. Senior citizen volunteers initiated the yoga session with the guided instructions from the team; gradually walkers joined in to meditate and try out the different asanas.

Volunteers were then taken through an Active Ageing session which included activities to Challenge your Brainby Ms. Ramani Sundaram, a research scientist at Nightingales Medical Trust. The onlookers and participants found this to be a unique experience with senior citizens being enthusiastically involved in physical and mental activities which charged them with positive energy.

The park was filled with excitement and cheer with as many as 40 Rural Games of India were brought back to life. The games revived sweet childhood memories was what some of the participants remarked. And that is exactly what Indian Museum at Kolkata did for our friends with dementia.
