1Red Rock ResortAlta, Norway
Fall 2010 Professor James Warfield
The site chosen for the Red Rock Resort, is one that offers a view to the North, as well as the Southern-exposure to the mountains and the North-East view towards the rock art site. The site itself is quite barren, with a few patches of paneled rock throughout, leaving a grassy area to build upon. The building then emphasizes the North/North-East view and offers maximum viewing opportunity throughout all times of the year.
Within each site design and layout, the rooms are situated so they all maintain an unobstructed view in both the North and the North East direction, again to emphasize the desired view of the Aurora Borealis or the historic Rock Art. There are three schemes of room layouts: the ones that are stacked maintain the multi-level section to not only enhance the view, but to extend balconies for the rooms above by pushing the whole room back. In the main resort space, there is a cafe, a bar, as well as a grand lounge space upon entry, equipped with afireplace, couches, and much more to maintain the comfortablilty and warmness within when visiting throughout any time of the year.
The design of the building as a whole is one that is both visually captivating as well as programatically inviting. There are three different room types which can accommodate any type of traveler and offer different activities all year round. The building itself not only offers private rooms, but it offers a restaurant on the lower level, a bar, a coffee shop, multiple sitting areas, a rooftop terrace with art and seating spaces, and many other qualities that are then left for the traveler to discover.

(Hybridization)Looking at the overlapping systems of multiple extremities, to create not only spatial zones, but faade ideas, programmatic adjacencies, and spatial relationships in both external and internal situations.
In my study and experience of a hybrid zone, I not only see the physical overlap of the hybrid zone, but of the spatial and visual overlap that is created to further understand what a hybrid may be. In this project, I am not focusing on a specific program for each floor and each room, but focusing on a spatial aspect that can encompass many different programs based on the time and need for space. In a way, it will act as a large-scale Guerilla Tower, with program popping in and out of each space on a needed basis. These programs will include, but are not limited to Convention Centers, small-scale dwell-ing space, display space, interactive zones, closed off and secluded areas, and many more. All of these spaces are set up and focused on the main visual attributes of the tower itself, and will work with other groups and program zones as well as with the environment and surrounding area.

the buildings are overlaid onto the landscape design, joining at the
corners and following the paths made by the diagonals of the obstructing
roads in the city of Chicago
the landscape strategy is derived from the Jeffersonian grid as well as the city
grid
these elements are the pieces of the landscape that change and add different
material, being the pieces that are pushed into the landscape to create different planes and topographies
the outline to the left is the outline of the land at water level. The land is approximately 10
in thickness from the water, and then goes up another 20 to the street level.

conceptual site section with scenarios noted

At the site known as Wolf Point, where the Chicago river branches off to the north and the south bank, there is currently a parking structure located there. The proposal for this project was that of designing an interactive landscape, as well as a water taxi depot, multi cultural center, and any other extra activity and event spaced proposed.
Through the analysis and study of the city of Chicago itself, I have focused on the linearity and structure of the formation of the city. When looking at the city at a more macro scale, you see that there is a very prominent orthogonal grid over the entire city. This main pattern is what is the main pattern and concentration of my site scheme.
When looking at city context in more detail and depth, you start to see these diagonal lines that intersect and protrude the grid system. These diagonals are then transcended and used for the overall programmatic development of the built forms as well as the structure and design of these forms. When you overlay thetwo grid systems, you start to see a manipulation of the corner and the shape and form of it transform.

Comprehensive preservation and adaptive re-use proposal for the Old Sheriffs House and Jail in Crown Point Indiana.
In this team project, we dealt with historic preservation and structural engineering faculty in order to preserve the building to the best of its ability while still providing the program that was necessary for the area of Crown Point Indiana. In this area, there is a great lack of hotels which are close by, the closest being roughly 15 minutes away. In our design proposal, we chose to go with a boutique hotel along with a restaurant and office space in the readaption and reuse of this building.
We took the difficulties and problems of the existing building full-on, working to preserve as much of the existing environment as possible. This included using the existing jail cell structures to create restaurant seating arrangements, help on the separation and division of hotel rooms, and also using this design for the implementation of further structural and aesthetic elements.
Our proposal not only included a great deal of re-use of the existing building and elements, but it also included added geothermal energy systems along with hollow-core floor slabs which would be used for both the supply and return of air.

High Speed Rail TerminalChicago, Illinois
Fall 2011 Professor John Stallmeyer
5
Located in the heart of Chicago, Illinois, this multi-functional high-speed rail terminal is designed to not only fulfill the needs of the rail line, but also gives a location for offices, commercial developments, and a future proposal for a hotel which has a clear view right down the East bank of the river. In this design, the floorplates, structure, and the appearance of the facade is one which is designed to evoke fluidity, movement, and open-air design. The curving of the railings and of the floorplates lead you towards the entry points for the high-speed rail terminal, leading you down the large openings and through security through a set of escalators and elevators. This concept is reflected in not only the floor-plate design but in the structure, using metal tubing and tree-like columns which support these tubes and hold up the metal-decked roof. The entire structure is supposed to feel as though it is one whole element, being encapsulated by a large-spanning roof plate and having large, open floor plates.
Another element that is embedded into the structure of the building is that of the columns themselves. They function as both the lighting and air supply and return terminals being implemented in a multitude of ways for the project in its entirety.
