The video “Mounds-Midway School of Nursing” was made by Rod Larson. It was part of the program for Bethel University’s Friends of the History Center fall gathering in October 2017.

The MMSN Historical Society and Museum is no longer active. The MMSN Alumni Association continues to serve the alumni. Our mail box will remain at Midway Campus.

We are grateful for those who have served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Susan Obeng has served for the past three years and elected not to serve for another term. She is educating future nurses as an Adjunct Nursing Professor at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. We are glad for all our alumni who are mentoring and educating the nurses of the future.

CLASS OF 1958 Kay Hobbs Skoog

We are the Class of 1958. When rent was between 92 and 100 dollars, gas was 29 cents, and the first Jet Trans-Atlantic passenger service occurred.

In the Twin Cities we have a group who have been gather-ing for over 10 years meeting, discussing book and socializing. Eunice Heuer started our get together by inviting everyone for Christmas several years. Without her persistence I do not know if our book group would have gotten off the ground. We have read many books and discussed world issues with a variety of opinions. We meet the third Monday of every month in each other’s homes. Barb Anderson, Pat Erickson, Arly Fuhr, occasionally Carol Ekblad, Carol Gregorson, Shirley Gowdy, Kay Skoog, and Dorie Oase are the members.

Two from our group passed away in 2014, Eunice Heuer and Barb Hoelscher. Why is this gathering and book group important to us? We were not in touch before and now we have maintained a closeness that helps us care and love each other.

From a class of 32, five have passed away. The remainder of the class live around

the country. At this age some are widows, some have health problems, many had gone on for more schooling, some are single, some are still married with their spouse in good health, some still live in their home, and others are in senior living. But, we mainly all have maintained a zest for living and enjoy each day. Some remember our days at Mounds Midway better than others, but this is the common thread that connects all of us.

Are you interested in helping with the Newsletter? We need an editor for the Newsletter. We are looking for someone (or small group) who would be interested in being the editor. Do you have writing or editing skills you would like to use. Is there a group who together would enjoy

When we sort our processions and down size, we find surprises. In the Museum we found a MMSN Newsletter from seventy-two years ago. You may appreciate some notes from the 1946 Newsletter:• Annual luncheon was held at the Commodore Hotel in St Paul for $2.00 per plate.• Annual dues $2.00 per year.• Newsletter was published in April and November and sent to alumnae members who had paid their dues. (In 1948 they started sending the Newsletter to all Alumnae.)• There were 800 graduates by 1946.

• Monthly Alumnae meetings were held at the Lowry Medical Arts Building September to June.• In addition to the officers of the Alumni Association there were eleven committees with 39 graduates participating: Legislative, Revision, Social, Red Cross, Program, Publicity and Newsletter, Alumnae Dinner, Home Coming Tea, Cards, 4th District MNA, and Membership• Newsletter included a list of 21 nurses and 14 physicians returning from military service.• The Newsletter was 24 pages. Postage 1½ cents.

2018 HISTORICAL SOCIETY REPORTKaren Jacobson, President of the Historical Society

The Mounds Alumni Museum closed at the end of 2017. HealthEast Fairview needs the space for employees, and has no other space to offer. We have been expecting this for about two years. We followed our by-laws. The items were offered to Bethel University, Ramsey County Historical Society, and the Minnesota Historical Society. Several large items are being left at Midway to be on display as they choose. Those items are specific to Midway. HealthEast Fairview has a Department of Art and a person who oversees the art displays at the various sites. Over the past few months, we have met some lovely people who have been supportive and generous. Our items will be lovingly cared for as they reside in new homes.Thank

you to them all. We no longer can accept donations or dues for the historical society. Our records will be kept and the left over money given to the Alumni Association. The tapes of interviews will also be kept. There were pictures taken last year at the open house. A book has been made and will be available to interested alumni. Details will be announced at

the May Luncheon. This has been a very difficult process. Thank you for all of the support. It has been a pleasure to serve.

Preserving a common heritage played a significant role for the Alumni Association. Ruth Gustafson, who served on the faculty for nearly forty years, preserved artifacts from Mounds Park Hospital and early School of Nurs-ing years and displayed them in Robert Earl Hall. When Mounds Park Hospital closed, these items were trans-ferred to Midway dormitory and placed in storage.

In 1991 HealthEast Midway offered the alumni space for a historical museum on 5 North and the board accepted. Mary Jo Borglund Monson organized a historical society board of directors. The stored artifacts, plus other donations from Midway Hospital and individuals, were moved into the new space and placed on display in the museum. In 1993, the group was organized by the state of Minnesota as a non-profit corporation. When Midway Hospital closed in 1997, HealthEast offered another space on 3 North, further encouraging their efforts to collect additional artifacts, photographs and documents. In 2003, HealthEast offered a space of 1,300 square feet on the main floor in the corporate tower. This further encouraged the Associa-tion to carry out its mission: “To collect and preserve the historical knowledge of our nursing heritage for

educational, scientific, and social purposes.”

The 1993 Board of Directors of the MMSN Historical Society: Charlotte Amy Anderson, Louise Hansen Dansare, Mary Stevens Diers, Arlene Oppertshauser Erickson, Della Hildall Fast, Karen Swan Guenter, Marilyne Backlund Gustafson, Gladys Benson Karhu, Ivy Gassner Kroll, Mary Jo Borglund Monson, Millie Ohman Scott and Phyllis Benson Trygg.

In March 2016 the leadership of HealthEast informed the museum that they were repurposing the space used by the museum. In June 2017 they asked the Historical Society to relocate the artifacts by December 2017. Significant artifacts have been moved to Bethel Uni-versity, Minnesota History Center and Ramsey County Historical Society for preservation and future display. The MMSN Historical Museum closed December 2017.

The Historical Society Board is making a book about the museum that will be available for purchase. It will be a photo book of artifacts from MMSN and displays from the museum. More information will be available at the May 5th, 2018 luncheon.

2017 COMMUNITY PROJECT Community Service Project Co-Directors Nancy Jacob and Barbara Reiter

The MMSN Alumni were again able to donate to the Naomi Family Residence. It is a homeless shelter for women and children in downtown St. Paul sponsored by Union Gospel Mission. We received checks in the amount of $280 at the annual luncheon and they were given directly to the organization. Barbara Reiter, Shirley Hubenette and myself were able to shop at Walmart on August 15th. The shoppers enjoyed purchasing bath sets

(towels, shower curtains, bath rugs), laundry baskets, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies such as wipes, all purpose cleaners, laundry soap and children’s pants and tops. We also included eight $40 gift cards. The total donations for the Community Service Project were $1026.54 from the MMSN alumni. Submitted by Nancy Jacob

The Kirbach-Dahlby, Mary Danielson and Esther Garnett Scholarships of up to $1000 are available to Mounds-Midway School of Nursing (MMSN) alumni wishing to further their education in a college or university of their choice. MMSN alumni seeking a scholarship award are given first priority. Second priority will be to award the scholarships to children of alumni for Nursing or Healthcare education. Parish Nursing programs also qualify. The scholarships are

funded by alumni dues and memorial gifts. They are announced at the annual alumni luncheon in May.

Applications must be requested, received and approved by the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Completed applications can be sent to Marge Berg at [email protected]. Applications must be post-marked by March 1st of the current year of application.

Scholarships awarded in 2017:Kirbach-Dahlby Scholarship of $1000 was awarded to Dawn Opseth Rankin, class of 1981, for BSN.Mounds-Midway School of Nursing Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded $800 to Nina Grunzke, a Bethel University nursing student from Hutchinson, MN.

Thank you for your generous contributions to fund scholarships for future nurses.

The Alumni Association is collecting the name of the contact person for each MMSN class. Some classes are very active and feel connected. Other classes have had limited contact since graduation. Some classes call the contact person their “class rep.” Other classes have one person who keeps a record of the class member’s addresses, emails and phone numbers.

Who is the person with the contact information for your class? Would you share the name of that person with us? Our purpose is to ask them for the contact

information for your class. We also have information to share with them from the alumni association that may help your class to reconnect with classmates with whom you have lost contact.

Please send the name, phone number, address and email of your class rep or contact person to [email protected] or to the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing Alumni Association at 1700 University Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104.Thank you, Carol Harms
