The Cedar Rapids/Riverside Alumni scholarship program continues to grow! Our wonderful donors have set new records each year since 2012 when we began mailing the newsletter to all CRHS/Riverside alumni.

This alumni is such an amazing group! The 2016 scholarship donations totaled $6,227, almost $600 over last year’s record. The banquet was exciting: an anonymousdonor promised to match all donations up to $500. Would you believe we collected $1,265 over the next half hour or so? Lots of people came forward with donations big and small. Several of the honor classes collected among themselves and donated anywhere from $100 to $286. In addition, we received $300 from Elaine (Braun) Zoucha on behalf ofCedar’s Rapid Run.

So thank you, every one of you! Thank you so very much for your part inmaking Cedar Rapids/Riverside the best darn alumni in the world!

Scholarship winners update:

Charger FootballThreepeat

The Riverside Charger football team won its third consecutive Nebraska 6-Man championship, capping off the 2016 season by defeating Cody-Kilgore 60-30 in the championship game at UNK. Only one other school in the history of the state has won three consecutive titles. Arthur County won the championship 2009 through 2011.

Riverside’s threepeat is even more remarkable because this team was formed just three years ago when the Cedar/Spalding merger created the Riverside School. This team has an all time record of 32 wins and only one loss. They are currently on a 26 game winning streak. Riverside coaches are Joe Imus, Clint Anderson, and Will Wragge.

The Riverside basketball team is also pretty amazing. They have been to the state tournament all three years, placing 3rd or 4th each year. The basketball coaches are Joe Imus, and Scott Schmeiding.

90 Proof If you’re a fan of 90 Proof, you’ll want to be in Cedar on Friday, August 4th, for an early start to the CRHS/Riverside Alumni 2017 weekend. These young men will be playing that evening at Country Inn from 8 pm to 12 midnite.

Five CRHS grads make up the group: Tyler Zentner (2011) lead guitar; Matt Watts (2007) vocals & rhythm guitar; Lee Watts (2010) drums; Matt Zoucha (2010) rhythm guitar; and Edward Pritchard (2009) bass.

Tyler Zentner and Matt Watts were the first of the band to perform together. They soon convinced Lee Watts and Matt Zoucha to join them. These four made their debut as 90 Proof at Gringo Joe’s Cantina in August of 2015.

From left: Edward Pritchard (2009); Matt Zoucha (2010);Matt Watts (2007); Lee Watts (2010); and Tyler Zentner (2011).

Edward Prichard joined them in February of this year.

90 Proof plays country and rock music, and they are be-coming quite well known in this area. They’ve played in most of the surrounding towns including Albion, Fullerton, St.Edward, Primrose, Belgrade, Silver Creek, Columbus, Ashland, and of course, Cedar!

ScholarShip Winner Selection proceSS The CRHS/Riverside Alumni scholarship is offered to all graduates of Riverside School. Students respond to five written questions. The alumni secretary receives the applications, blocks the names of the students, and gives each submission a number. Each committee member receives a copy of all the applications, and ranks them according to standard criteria. The names of the applicants are not revealed until after the winners are selected. The amount and number of scholarships awarded depends on the amount of donations received in a given year. We expect to award at least 5 scholarships this year in the amount of $1,000 each.

Community Picnic After the Rapid Run, you can enjoy Cedar’s annual Community Picnic beginning at 1 pm in the park. Horn T Zoo’s mobile unit will be here. There will be Krazy ball games, and a hypnotist will perform. And of course, lots of game and food booths, a beer garden, and a barbecue from 5 to 7 pm. In the evening, the excitement moves downtown where Country Inn will sponsor a street dance featuring the Byron James Gang.

Mark your calendar for July 15 in Cedar Rapids!

Cedar’s Rapid Run For the last several years, we have enjoyed having the Rapid Run on the morning of the annual alumni banquet. But this year, Rapid Run director Elaine (Braun) Zoucha (1986) and her trusty sidekick Kim (Rutten) Schilousky (1976) have decided they need to be able to focus their attention on the alumni festivities on the first Saturday of August. This year’s Rapid Run will be held in Cedar Rapids on Saturday,July 15 at 8:00 am. There will be a 5K run/walk and a 1 mile kids run. For more info, check the Cedar’s Rapid Run page on Facebook.

Mission Statement

“Riverside students are the future of our Communities, our State, and our Nation. The mission of the Cedar Rapids/Riverside Alumni Association, Inc. is to provide college or univer-sity scholarship funds and mentoring opportunities to students to assist them in their goals.”

Alumni Dues The Alumni Associationmembership dues are a very important part of keeping the association active. It is extremely important that ALL ALUMNI pay the Annual Dues of $8.00.

We need help! The alumni dance is a long tradition, but it takes a lot of effort to organize all the details necessary for a successful evening. Lately, we’ve had serious doubts about our ability to manage the dance. Trish (Gordon) Johnson has served on the committee many times in the past. She has graciously agreed to manage the dance this year. We need an assistant for Trish this year, and someone to manage the evening festivities in the future. Like the banquet, the scholarship fund, the newsletter, and everything else this group does, it’s a lot of work! And none of these things happen on their own. Somebody has to do them! This might be a good time for a brief explanation of how the committee operates and what each job entails. President: Jan Zoucha is our fearless leader. She plans and chairs the meetings, and oversees all the work of the alumni. Jan drives to Cedar from Lincoln for the meetings. Secretary: Kay (Ahlers) Swerczek has taken on the job of secretary. She will be responsible for processing the banquet reservations, making bank deposits, and keeping the address database up to date. Treasurer: Dan Gordon writes the checks and does our bookkeeping. Check out the financial statement on page 11 and you’ll get an idea of the exacting detail he puts into this job. Dan drives from Omaha for the meetings. Public Relations: Joan (Loeffler) Berney is responsible for the content of the newsletter. Barb (Loeffler) Westmeyer is our graphic artist; she gets the newsletter into the computer and works with the printer to produce the finished product. Photographer: Bernie Auten is our photographer and idea man. His influence has spurred some of the changes this group has undergone in the last few years. His passion is the scholarship fund. Bernie drives from Norfolk for the meetings. Web Site Developer: Brent Schuele brought us into the internet age, making it possible for us to pay online for dues, banquet reservations, and scholarship donations. Do any of these areas appeal to you as a way that you might help with the work of the alumni? Let us know if you can help! There is a space at the bottom of the reservation form for your feedback.

A Special Prize Drawing Joan (Kennedy) Batenhorst (1949) brought us an unusual gift at last years banquet – a maroon, 1945 Tigersletter sweater. It belonged to her husband, Dick Batenhorst. He lettered in basketball and music, and the sweater carries both emblems.

Dick graduated in 1945. He died in 2015.

We’ll hold a raffle drawing for the sweater at this year’s alumni reunion, to benefit the scholarship fund. Buy your $1 ticket at the banquet, and we’ll have the drawing right after the meal.

A graduation program from 1896 The school recently received a unique keepsake – an original program from the 1896 Cedar Rapids High School graduation ceremonies. It was in surprisingly good condition for a document that is 121 years old. The program was a gift from Hal Stewart, a descendant of Clyde H.Stewart, one of the 1896 graduates.
