On the cover: Carl ’76 and Cheryl Deweerdt ’78 Hughes were surrounded by their family and Northwest alumni, students, employees and community members as they cut a ribbon to mark the opening of the Hughes Fieldhouse.

N O R T H W E S T POSTCARDThe Bearcat cheerleaders sprinted onto the Booth Family Field in the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse on Oct. 12 as the Northwest community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the $21 million facility.

Northwest is a recipient – for the second consecutive year – of an Educational Fundraising Award, an honor presented annually by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) to superior fundraising programs at educational institutions across the country.

“We are very proud of the work that our University Advancement team is doing to provide support to Northwest, and it is very gratifying to receive this national recognition for our efforts,” Lori McLemore Steiner ’85, the executive director of university advancement and chief finance officer for

the Northwest Foundation, said. “We also are thankful for the support our donors and friends provide to Northwest and this recognition is a testament to that.”

Northwest was one of five universities among public comprehensive institutions with endowments of more than $35 million to receive CASE’s Educational Fundraising Award for Overall Improvement this fall. Honorees were selected based on a judging panel’s blind analysis of three years of fundraising data submitted to the annual Voluntary Support of Education Survey.

Now more than ever, it’s a momentous time to be a Bearcat! Volunteers and donors like you strengthen our mission of focusing on student success – every student, every day. Your partnership is a testament to what ultimately benefits our workforce and communities: Northwest’s student-centric culture and performance excellence.Your Bearcat family is a winning culture – a

“University of Champions” with 46 national championships in academics and athletics since 2009. Together we share in achieving this impressive

performance excellence. Profession-Based Learning: It’s in all we do.

Innovative majors and student-focused faculty uniquely provide opportunities for students to collaborate on real-world projects from day one.

Affordability: We are the fourth-most affordable among 17 peer universities in cost of attendance and net price, with the lowest increases in Missouri and nationally for nine years.

Enrollment: As peers experienced flat or declining enrollment this fall, our overall enrollment is up 8.2 percent, and freshman enrollment is up 9.3 percent. Our underrepresented domestic freshman class is the second-highest ever.

Retention: We outperform our statewide peers. A record 78 percent of last year’s freshmen returned to Northwest this fall.

Graduation: We are well beyond our statewide peers as 73 percent of our students graduate with a college degree.

Career Placement: We are the best in the state for job placement – 97 percent of undergraduates and 99 percent of graduates secure jobs or continue their education within six months of completing degrees. Throughout this issue, you will see a myriad

of names. These are the people who elevate our winning culture. They are advocates. They are changemakers. They are you.Thank you for making so much possible.Sincerely,

Dr. Lonelle R. Rathje ’97, ’03Northwest Foundation Inc. executive director and vice president of external relations

With the music of the Bearcat Marching Band echoing from corner to corner and an explosion of silver streamers, on Oct. 12 as Northwest declared its Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse officially open. “Because of the Hughes Fieldhouse, peers,

competitors, friends and foes are taking note,” Jasinski said. “They are acknowledging Northwest’s culture, our performance excellence and that we indeed are the university of choice.” The facility is expected to enhance student

engagement on the Northwest campus and create more opportunities for intramurals and recreation as well as large University events such as commencement ceremonies, concerts or Career Day. Student organizations and performance groups will use the facility for activities during inclement weather. Bearcat athletics teams are expected to benefit from the facility’s 90-yard practice turf and 300-meter indoor competition track.“This massive facility has the ability to change

student life from multiple perspectives, including athletics, co-curriculars, academics and so many more opportunities that are just too numerous to mention,” Northwest Student Senate President Alyssa Lincoln said. “This fieldhouse will open doors for students that will create professional, social, academic and extracurricular opportunities that will produce more well-rounded Bearcats.”

ANNUAL REPORT

The Northwest Foundation, the fundraising arm of Northwest Missouri State University, awarded its second-highest level of scholarship distributions and secured $4.5 million in donor funding during fiscal year 2018, adding to a record $17 million during the last two years.Seventy-five percent of the total funds

raised by the Foundation were cash contributions, while the organization received 4,281 donations.“It has been yet another pinnacle year of

achievements in support of our students, faculty and programs,” Dr. Lonelle Rathje ’97 ’03, vice president of external relations and executive director of the Northwest Foundation, said. “It is clear that the nationally recognized distinctiveness of Northwest – academic excellence, affordability, retention, profession-based learning experiences, career placement and student satisfaction, to name a few – speak volumes to alumni, friends and organizations wishing to engage, donate and elevate a highly influential culture at Northwest.”Among the Foundation’s FY18 highlights,

with the support of last year’s lead gift by the Hughes Family Foundation, is the completion of the Carl and Cheryl Hughes

Fieldhouse, a 137,250 square-foot, $21 million facility designed to serve a multitude of social, recreational and economic needs for the University and region. As one of the largest public-

private partnerships ever in the region, the Hughes Fieldhouse project also secured the largest amount of donor funding for a capital project in Northwest’s history. The Foundation secured nearly $14 million in gifts and pledges for the project, and more than 650 donors have contributed. The Founding 50, a group of lead donors who have committed gifts of $50,000 or greater to the project, grew to a membership of 74 donors whose gifts represent 94 percent of the dollars raised. The Foundation secured an additional $205,950 for the project through the sale of bricks, pavers, trees and benches to beautify the landscape surrounding the facility. Scholarship support also remains a central

mission of the Foundation, which awarded nearly $934,000 in financial assistance for 1,217 students during FY18. This represents the second-highest dollar amount awarded in the history of the Foundation, as well as the highest number of donor-funded scholarships awarded.Furthermore, the Foundation achieved

an 11.8 percent increase in funding raised through its 1905 Society during FY18. The 1905 Society, which saw its membership increase by 3.8 percent to 161 members, is the premier giving society for annual gifts, recognizing supporters who make an annual unrestricted gift of $1,000 or more. Meanwhile, the average gift supporting the Foundation’s annual giving program increased by 23 percent. In September, the University hosted its

sixth annual Powering Dreams celebration of donors and scholars. In April, for the fourth consecutive year, Northwest students celebrated alumni and friends who contribute generously to the University in support of scholarships, campus facilities and the value of a college degree during

“Thank a Donor Day” activities on the campus. The annual event educates Northwest students about the importance of private giving by alumni, family and friends. It also draws attention to the impact alumni support has throughout the University and actively engages students in the stewardship of alumni donors. “The support from our alumni and friends

to the University really speaks to the culture of pride and commitment Bearcats have for Northwest,” Bob Machovsky ’15, Northwest’s director of alumni relations and annual giving, said. “Our success in FY18 and into the future is because of those who continue to lift Northwest up when investing their time, talents and treasures to this deserving place.” The Northwest Foundation, a 501(c) 3

not-for-profit corporation, is responsible for receiving, investing, stewarding and disbursing private support on behalf of the donors of the University for the benefit of the institution, its students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Northwest Foundation, governed by a 39-member volunteer board of directors, is staffed by members of Northwest’s Office of University Advancement. The Foundation’s total assets under

management increased 4 percent to $36.4 million while its endowment stands at $25.6 million. In FY18, the Foundation provided $4.7 million to the University to support various needs, and the Foundation’s University support during the last two years totals $11 million.

ANNUAL REPORT

NORTHWEST ALUMNI MAGAZINE I WINTER 20188

The Northwest Alumni Association and the Office of University Advancement’s alumni relations staff continued in FY18 to offer opportunities to alumni and friends to support and stay involved with Northwest. Alumni relations also includes the annual giving and stewardship programs. The Northwest Alumni

Association hosted many great events in 2017-18. In total, more than 26,000 alumni and friends attended the association’s programing. A few highlights included the Alumni Awards Banquet that honored eight individuals during Family Weekend. The Alumni Association also honored the Class of 1967, whose members returned to campus to celebrate their Golden Years reunion at Homecoming. Additionally, the Association’s alumni and friends chapters stayed busy by hosting events and socials throughout

the country, allowing Bearcats to stay connected with each other and with Northwest. The Northwest Alumni

Association continued to host events featuring “the national pastime” during the summer months. Northwest Night at the K and Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs allowed for alumni and friends to enjoy a night at the ballparks and support local teams while gathering with Bearcats in support of Northwest. The Northwest Alumni

Association’s Tourin’ Bearcats travel program continues to be well received. In 2017-18, alumni and friends enjoyed seeing the “Colors of New England,” a “Spotlight on Tuscany” and the “Shades of Ireland.” The next trip will be a “Hawaiian Adventure.” For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at

660.562.1248. The Northwest Alumni

Association thanks its volunteers for the more than 4,000 hours they contributed to help make all alumni events successful. Alumni Relations partners

with offices throughout campus, including the Office of

Admissions, the Department of Athletics, Career Services, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the Office of Student Involvement. Alumni Relations co-hosts tailgates, assists with recruiting future Bearcats, attends career fairs, and brings alumni and students together in support of student success.Annual Giving experienced

increases in membership and dollars raised to The 1905 Society. The annual giving program also

supported the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse project by selling bricks, pavers, benches and trees that line the Walk of Champions. The stewardship program

offered opportunities to thank donors in a meaningful and personal way, including the fourth annual Thank a Donor Day in April to provide students and employees an opportunity to come together to say thank you to Northwest’s generous donors.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: VALENTINE OSAKWEOsakwe, a junior computer science major from Nigeria, is a

two-time recipient of the Carolyn Houts International Student Scholarship.“I am immeasurably grateful for this scholarship,” he said. “It is

because of the generosity of the donors that students get to achieve our lifelong dreams of achieving a better tomorrow for ourselves and our various communities.”Osakwe is active with the Northwest Dance Company, the

African Student Organization and the International Student Organization. He also is a peer advisor and a Leadership Green mentor. He chose to attend Northwest not only for the education it offers but for the people and opportunities to build meaningful relationships with classmates and faculty. “Northwest has offered me the opportunity to not just

grow in my academics but also grow as a leader on campus, especially in organizations that I’ve served in,” he said. “I have worked with some of the best people I’ve ever met and experienced and accepted cultures that I would not have experienced without Northwest.”After completing his bachelor’s degree, he plans to pursue

work as a software developer or analyst.

ADOPT-A-BEARCAT SCHOLARSHIPS

15NORTHWEST ALUMNI MAGAZINE I WINTER 2018

To assist in meeting a critical need for scholarship dollars, the University created this unique annual giving program. Recipients meeting Northwest’s policies for admission and financial assistance receive a one-time, $500 Adopt-A-Bearcat Scholarship to help offset educational expenses. Northwest matches a donor’s gift (minimum $250) dollar-for-dollar and awards scholarships in his or her honor, or that of a loved one. For example, if a $500 donation is made, Northwest matches

it and awards two individual $500 scholarships. These scholarships are crucial in providing the additional funding needed for students who might otherwise not have been able to afford attending Northwest. Several groups of donors collectively have offered one or more scholarships. Adopt-A-Bearcat Scholarships awarded during the program’s fiscal year are listed below.

These donors have created a planned or deferred gift for the University or Northwest Foundation. There is no minimum level of gift required.

James H. Lemon, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311, also known at the time as the “Nodaway County Normal Bill.” Fighting against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.

THE GAUNT HOUSE SOCIETYThese donors have contributed between $500,000 and $999,999 in lifetime gifts.

Born in Staffordshire, England, on April 4, 1830, Mr. Thomas W. Gaunt was the son of Thomas Gaunt and Catherine Wooley. He moved to Nodaway County in 1857, where he established his own plant nursery cultivating a wide variety of ornamental, shade and fruit trees. The Thomas Gaunt House was constructed during the 1870s. It has been the home for all Northwest presidents since its donation in 1905 by the daughters of Thomas Gaunt.

THE TURRET SOCIETYThese donors have contributed $1 million or more in lifetime gifts.

As students in the early 1900s arrived at the Maryville train depot, one of the first sights to the west of the station was the impressive turrets atop the institution’s Academic Hall, later known as the Administration Building. Through devastating tornados and a destructive fire, the Administration Building and its turrets have withstood the test of time, standing tall as an enduring symbol of Northwest.

THE BIRCHES SOCIETYThese donors have contributed between $250,000 and $499,999 in lifetime gifts.

The first building erected on campus was Academic Hall, now known as the Administration Building. Its commanding location is situated on the highest point of land between Omaha, Nebraska, and St. Louis on the old Wabash Railroad line, 1,163 feet above sea level. Five cut-leaf birches stood at the site like sentinels, prompting faculty and students to describe the Normal School as being located “behind the birches.”

THE BELL TOWER SOCIETYThese donors have contributed between $100,000 and $249,999 in lifetime gifts.

In 1965, Dr. Robert P. Foster announced plans to build a bell tower as a memorial to deceased alumni, former faculty members and those from the University’s family who died representing our country. After years of raising money, ground was finally broken in fall 1970 and the sounds of chiming bells greeted students returning for the fall of 1971.

THE LONG WALK SOCIETYThese donors have contributed between $25,000 and $99,999 in lifetime gifts.

The original architect’s plans for the campus, which were modeled after Cambridge University, included a large quadrangle, marked on the most northern point by the Administration Building, with all future campus buildings built facing the quadrangle. While the original plans were never realized, the first sidewalk built from the entrance at Fourth Street ran straight up to the front door of the Administration Building and became known as the Long Walk.

PACESETTERSASSOCIATE MEMBERS

The Northwest Foundation is thankful for the lifetime support of all alumni and friends. Although lifetime giving levels now begin at $25,000, these individuals assumed a vital role in the former Tower Society with their lifetime gifts between $10,000 and $24,999.

Evenings are busy at the call center inside the Michael L. Faust Center for Alumni and Friends on the Northwest campus, where student employees, known as “Cat Callers,” call alumni, friends of the institution, and parents of current students, asking them to consider giving to the Northwest Fund, an unrestricted account that supports the greatest needs of the University.Their efforts are paying off. The call center started the fiscal

year with more than $32,000 in family donations, a new record for the University.Shelby Bottiger ’15 started work in May as Northwest’s

annual giving and alumni relations specialist and oversees the call center.“I am so passionate about Northwest and student success,”

Bottiger said. “This job is very rewarding because I get to see how money from private support goes directly to students every single day, whether it’s for scholarships, profession-based learning or for a specific department that is able to offer something they previously could not. I get to tell the story of how students benefit from private support to encourage alumni to give back to Northwest.”Bottiger has strengthened the call center by implementing an

eight-hour training session for new Cat Callers and provides guidance on conversing with alumni.

THE REGENTS’ CIRCLEThese donors contributed at least $25,000 between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

The Board of Regents serves as the governing body for Northwest Missouri State University. The nine members, including a non-voting student regent, are appointed by the governor and approved by the Missouri Senate. The board holds the Northwest vision in highest regard.

THE NORTHWEST CIRCLEThese donors contributed between $10,000 and $24,999 between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

The Fifth District Normal School opened in 1905, offering two-year programs to educate teachers for the region. The name was changed to Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 as the curriculum began to focus on four-year programs. As its prominence as a regional institution began to grow and the fields of study continued to expand, the name was changed to Northwest Missouri State College in 1949. Finally, as the breadth of its programs continued to increase, especially graduate studies, the name Northwest Missouri State University was approved in 1972. No matter the formal name, the institution has always been known by its alumni and friends as Northwest.

THE CORNERSTONE CIRCLEThese donors contributed between $5,000 and $9,999 between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

The cornerstone of Academic Hall, now the Administration building, was laid Oct.12, 1907, amid great celebration, including a parade. Into the cornerstone, a copper box was placed that included many items from the era such as coins, pictures and a copy of the law that created the Fifth District Normal School. After many heartaches and delays, the building was finally completed in 1910.

THE NORMAL SCHOOL CLUBThese donors contributed between $500 and $999 between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

Efforts to bring a normal school - a training school for teachers in the public schools - to northwest Missouri began in 1874. After many years of struggle, in 1905, House Bill 311 and Senate Bill 114 were passed and signed into law by Gov. Joseph W. Folk. For 14 years, the institution was known as the Fifth District Normal School and graduated hundreds of teachers who served the region.

THE LAKE VIEW CLUBThese donors contributed between $250 and $499 between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

The lake on campus was created during the tenure of President Uel W. Lamkin. Known as Lamkin Lake, College Pond and now Colden Pond, the area has always been a popular place for students to gather and relax. Included in the surrounding geography are the well-known Kissing Bridge, the Karen Hawkins Memorial Peace Pavilion and Joyce and Harvey White International Plaza, making the south entrance to campus a visual masterpiece.

THE 1905 SOCIETYThese donors provided a minimum of $1,000 in unrestricted monetary support that is vital to achieve the possibilities that pave the way for a brighter future for Northwest and its sutdents.

The goals Northwest sets for itself continue to be ambitious, inspiring and visionary. The establishment of the Fifth District Normal School in 1905 was the culmination of a 30-year struggle to bring higher education to the region.

Most large corporations encourage volunteerism and charitable giving and are willing to match, dollar for dollar - or even greater - the amount that their employees donate to higher education. Along with matching monetary donations, some match volunteer hours with a cash amount. To find out if you or your spouse’s employer will match your gift, talk with your human resources office.
