February 24, 2015
Dear Members of the Brooks Institute community: Greetings! Brooks has had a very eventful three months since my last note. Following is a summary of some key developments: MS-STI launches May 2015 – I am pleased to share that we will launch the Master of Science in
Scientific and Technological Imagery (MS-STI) in the May 2015 semester. This represents the first new program launch at Brooks in some time; it took a number of years to complete this great achievement. While many individuals were involved, we owe the launch of MS-STI largely to the personal dedication of its Academic Leader – Scott Miles. MS-STI is a 36 credit-hour, low residency master’s degree program focused on scientific and technical media imaging methods. We already have secured approval to market MS-STI in over 25 states (including California); our goal is to offer this program in most of the US and also offshore. You can read more about MS-STI at Brooks.edu.
Director of Academic Affairs – Toni Johnson joined Brooks as Director of Academic Affairs earlier
this month. Toni spent over 25 years in IT, business consulting, and project management work for Accenture, H&R Block, and Sprint. She transitioned to higher education nearly 10 years ago as an adjunct professor. Most recently, she led the academic support function for the Colorado Technical University Colorado campuses. Toni has been involved in the arts as a patron and volunteer. Her efforts led to serving as president of the board of directors at the Theatre for Young America in Kansas City. Toni holds a BS from Wichita State University and a MS from Friends University. She is midway through the PhD in Business Administration at Northcentral University.
Enhanced social media presence – With leadership from Laura Nielsen, Director of Career Services,
we have enhanced our social media presence on several platforms. You may have noticed an increase in the frequency and impact of posts on our Brooks Facebook page. Popular items this year included Ernest Brooks II scuba diving on his 80th birthday and a Brooks Speaker Series presentation on campus by professional photographer Joel Grimes. Both of these posts garnered more than 100 likes. Further, by leveraging the power of social media, news about Grimes visit reached over 25,000 people. I encourage you to join the ongoing conversation and help us promote Brooks in your social network. You can find us on facebook.com/BrooksInstitute.
With these and other efforts, we are making rapid progress toward our vision of Raving Fans, industry reputation and recapturing innovation. I will have more to share soon about our enhanced approach to high school outreach, which includes partnering with alumni and reaching high school teachers online. In the meantime, have a wonderful spring season.

in positive growth & transition...Dear Brooks Alumni,It is a new day at Brooks Institute! Now that the transfer of ownership from CEC to GP Homestay is complete, we can all turn our attention to the revitalization of this historic institute. There is no other place on Earth like Brooks and it is up to us to uphold the mission we have always had to provide the best education possible in a variety of visual communication fields. This letter seeks to provide a brief picture of the changing context at Brooks so that you can be involved in the transformation.
For the last seven years or so, I was the dean of the School of Media, Culture & Design at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA. It is a return of sorts for me to come to Brooks since I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in photography along with a Ph.D. in communication. My passion is to find innovative ways to educate creative image-makers that give them the best chance to succeed in a rapidly changing world. I am joined in this goal by two valuable new members of the executive leadership team. My new provost Vic Liptak was previously Dean of the College at Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan as well as a colleague of mine at Woodbury University. Roger Gomez, the new V.P. for Finance & Operations, is the former Group Vice President of The Art Institutes.
I believe that learning to see is actually a process of learning to think. As such, it makes perfect sense for an institute of higher education to be devoted to those visual processes that allow people to fully engage in and explore the world around them. Our faculty continue to teach “in the Brooks way” by applying their professional expertise to the creation of immersive learning experiences that have long been associated with the school. It is apparent to me that we educate visionaries at Brooks who will go on to represent the world in ways that can only be imagined.
According to the archaeological record, the eye has evolved separately multiple times in the history of life. Brooks is likewise reinventing itself for a new chapter of its existence at precisely the moment when the visual has become more important than ever in our global communication practices. In this new world, a Brooks education provides invaluable preparation for students wishing to embark on exciting careers that link technology, creativity, and communication. We plan to build on these capabilities in the short term to achieve increased presence both internationally and in our local Ventura community.
The increased student-centered focus that is being implemented at Brooks will fully align with the objectives of the alumni organization. I encourage all members of our alumni to become active in the Brooks alumni organization, to volunteer as mentors for our students, and to stay engaged in our community outreach efforts. We value your input and look forward to working with you to ensure that Brooks realizes its full potential over time.
Visually yours,
Edward M. Clift, Ph.D.President
Hello fellow alumni,It’s great to be writing you all at this pivotal moment in Brooks Institute’s history. Brooks’ recent sale to GPHomestay is a new chapter in the history of the school, and one that hopes to rebuild and reinvigorate our alma mater. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with our new president, provost, and owner of Brooks and the ideas that they have for the institute remind me of why I first attended Brooks in the first place. Making Brooks an industry leader and fostering student and alumni relationships is one of the high points on their agenda.
In a lot of ways our Alumni Association is starting over as well. For almost 15 years our Alumni Association has fallen by the wayside. Sure, we’ve kept in touch with those we knew from school and maybe a few faculty members here and there, but the infrastructure of our alumni network has been almost non-existent. It hasn’t always been a smooth road as a Brooks alum and we are looking to change that. We want to hear from you, and we want you to be involved. If you are working on a project that you want the world to know about, tell us! Our association cannot thrive without contact and involvement from all of you. It could be something as simple as a phone call or an email, but we want to hear from you. We want to know how the association can further benefit you and your business. We have a network of thousands around the world working in so many different markets. With the strength of our alumni network you are just one phone call away from finding your next: buyer, editor, DP, digital tech, assistant, designer, or photographer.
We are also putting new programs and events into action for you our alumni. We are working with the school to finally have a working alumni database up and running. If you’re not in the directory, please read the article on page 48 to see how to sign-up. We are also expanding alumni involvement with students by re-working the alumni mentor program. We currently have 10% of the current student body signed up for the program, and we hope to make alumni involvement part of the “Brooks experience” for all students. We are always in need of more alumni to serve as mentors. Please visit: http://alumni.brooks.edu/mentor-program to sign up today! Lastly, we are having our first bi-coastal alumni meet-up as a kick off to celebrate Brooks 70th anniversary. If you’re in Los Angeles or New York on October 22nd, we hope to see you!
Brooks means something different to all of us and while we know that some of you may not carry the school in the most positive light, we all had experiences there that shaped our lives. All schools change over time and Brooks has been through its fair share of high points and low points. The one constant that has set and will continue to set Brooks apart from all the rest are the strength and dedication of it’s faculty and it’s students. We all love this industry and have developed relationships within it. Many of those relationships started from our time at Brooks, and I hope that with your help we can continue to thrive worldwide.
We live in a powerfully creative and visual time. Images communicate at rapid pace - and now our devices move them around the globe - seemingly like the speed of light itself. Even our institute transitions and seeks new horizons. I support our new president and administration and its forward thinking...
As we embrace and adapt to this pace we explore new imagery to separate our vision from the competition and thus scramble the art form of the past launching into future pixels of unkown shape and eyes of the future... we visually evolve.
We then change the way life is perceived and our images become instruments in the transition of "human-kind's optic evolution". Imagery provides the reflective debate. This year the Autumnal Equinox falls on September 23, 2015. Engage with the Harvest in the North and the planting in the southern hemisphere - enjoy your Fall of 2015...ciao -

FEATURINGFEATURING■ MESSAGE from Brooks Institute’s new President: Edward M. Clift, Ph.D.
An equinox occurs when the plane of Earth's Equator passes the center of the Sun. The two annual equinoxes are the only times when the subsolar point—the place on
Earth's surface where the center of the Sun is exactly overhead—is on the Equator, and, consequently, the Sun is at zenith over the Equator. The subsolar point crosses
the equator, moving northward at the March equinox and southward at the September equinox.
When on a geographic pole, the sun reaches
its greatest height, the moment of solstice, it
can be noon only along that longitude which
at that moment lies in the direction of the sun
from the pole. For other longitudes, it is not noon.
Noon has either passed or has yet to come. Hence
the notion of a solstice day is useful. The term
is colloquially used like midsummer to refer to
the day on which solstice occurs. The summer
solstice day has the longest period of daylight
– except in the polar regions, where daylight
is continuous, from a few days to six months
around the summer solstice.
The equinoxes are the only times when the
solar terminator is perpendicular to the
Equator. As a result, the northern and southern
Hemispheres are equally illuminated.
Commemorations
GlobalIn 2014, Google marked the first day of Autumn
with a Google Doodle of an animation showing a person walking through a wooded area where the leaves on the
trees change color as he walks past each tree.[3]
AUTUMNAL EQUINOX From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equinox
Near EastThe Southward equinox marks the first day of Mehr or Libra in the Iranian calendar. It is one of the Iranian festivals called Jashne Mihragan, or the festival of sharing or love in Zoroastrianism.
East AsiaIn Korea, Chuseok is a major harvest festival and a three-day holiday celebrated around the Autumn Equinox.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, often near the autumnal equinox day, and is an official holiday in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and in many countries with a significant Chinese minority. As the lunar calendar is not synchronous with the Gregorian calendar, this date could be anywhere from mid-September to early October. The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms (literally "climatic segments"), and the autumnal equinox (Qiūfēn, Chinese and Japanese:; Korean; Vietnamese: Thu phân) marks the middle of the autumn season. In this context, the Chinese character means "(equal) division" (within a season). In Japan there is an Autumnal Equinox Day ( Shūbun no hi).
EuropeThe Roman celebration of the Fall Equinox was dedicated to Pomona, goddess of fruits and growing things.[4]. The traditional harvest festival in the United Kingdom was celebrated on the Sunday of the full moon closest to the September equinox. The Southward equinox was "New Year's Day" in the French Republican Calendar, which was in use from 1793 to 1805. The French First Republic was proclaimed and the French monarchy was abolished on September 21, 1792, making the following day (the equinox day that year) the first day of the
"Republican Era" in France. The start of every year was to be determined by astronomical calculations following the real Sun and not the mean Sun.
NeopaganismNeopagans observe the September equinox as a cardinal point on the Wheel of the Year. In the Northern Hemisphere some varieties of paganism adapt Mabon traditions. In the Southern Hemisphere, the vernal equinox corresponds with Ostara.
One month prior to graduating from Brooks with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987, Nicola Majocchi flew to New York City to interview with one of his mentors in photography,
Irving Penn. Accepting an offer for a position, Nicola settled in NYC following graduation. His experiences working under the photography master exceeded his expectations and he remained in New York until 1995, working under Penn’s influence, including the collaboration and production of Penn’s book “Passage”.
Embarking on his own during the summer of 1995, Nicola took on work as a still life photographer for both national and international advertising campaigns for clients such as Johnny Walker, Maybelline, Coach, AT&T, GE, Oil of Olay and many others. By the end of 1995, Nicola began traveling to Milan to shoot fashion regularly for Grazia magazine as well as advertising clients such as Superga, Adidas, Think Pink, Maska, Laura Lindor, Parah, Giuliana Teso, Marina Yachting and others. Nicola enjoyed his new approach to photography and working with others within the industry. Traveling extensively with his camera,
he returned to his original photographic passion and documents real people through life reportage photography, allowing him to experiment with different personal projects. Moving frequently between New York and Milan over the next few years, Nicola eventually expanded his travels in order to shoot for various Italian, German and British fashion magazines such as Mirabella, Petra, Maxim, Red, Journal, German Vogue, Max and Shape. He also had many opportunities to photograph music, sports and screen celebrities like Sophie B. Hawkins, Jane Eaglen, Vitamin C, Alessandro Del Piero, Gabriel Batistuta, Giovanni Ribisi and fashion celebrities such as Jil Sander, Dolce and Gabbana, Donatella Versace, the Missonis, Alsessandro Dell’Acqua, Fendi and many more. Finding himself in Australia shooting for ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and SHE, Nicola returned to New York in 1998. Under the exclusive representation of Bill Stockland, Stockland & Matel, New York City, Nicola created beautiful and iconic images and before long, his signature photographic style (a postmodern mix of elegant urban edginess paired with dynamic juxtapositions and a timeless romanticisms that gives hint to his European past), solidified his position as one of New York’s most sought after photographers.
Nicola continues to travel and work between New York and Milan. Eventually opting to work in the US independently and without representation, Nichola maintains representation in Europe under his long time agent Alessandra Ruiu of Artalents Inc., Milan, Italy. Earlier this year Nicola became a US Citizen and has relocated to the Hollywood Hills with his wife Jacqueline.
Nicola looked towards Irving Penn as his mentor, both in life as well as in photography. One very important fact Penn taught Nicola during those years is that no matter what one is determined to become in life, be it doctor, teacher, insurance agent, or photographer, one first needs to become an excellent “problem

solver” before they are able to master their chosen profession. Having worked around the world with perseverance towards
mastering his craft for twenty years, Nicola attests to the truth behind Penn’s theory of problem solving.
Nicola’s photography philosophy has always had one special thing in mind. Penn always advised him “a picture is taken with your heart” (and not with your camera). Irving Penn
had an amazing power to capture and hold somebody’s attention completely and Nicola’s intention is to continue celebrating the legacy, and to promote the understanding
and appreciation, of his mentor, Irving Penn. Nicola wants to encourage knowledge and appreciation towards the
traditional values and principles of photography, be it analog or digital. Nicola’s approach introduces challenges that
conceptualize and bring together the different factors required to shoot a successful photograph; the creative, the visual, the
technical, and the human. The crucial “problem solving” factor can be applied within each of these aspects.

Gallery 27 Presented by Brooks Institute 27 E. Cota Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101 805-585-8000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SECOND NATURE, BROOKS INSTITUTE, MFA IN PHOTOGRAPHY 2015 Gallery 27 is pleased to present Second Nature, opening October 1, 2015 - November 1, 2015. This group show highlights the graduate candidates from Brooks Institute’s Master of Fine Arts in Photography program. Through the course of a life individuals acquire habits and skills from both familial and societal influences that often become indistinguishable from those that are instinctual. In Second Nature the graduating artists of Brooks Institute’s Master of Fine Arts in Photography program exhibit work that explores the boundaries of learned responses and instinctual behaviors, inviting a dialog surrounding their reactions to current cultural, socio-political, and environmental choices. This complex relationship is portrayed through a multi-sensory experience with the use of large-scale installations, traditional photographic processes, and alternative digital media, among others. These artists offer the viewer alternative perspectives on what has become second nature in their own lives. The opening reception for this exhibition will not only celebrate our students’ accomplishments but also marks Brooks Institute’s 70th year of educating photographers, filmmakers, artists and designers. Although this exhibition will conclude Gallery 27’s long-standing commitment to the arts community in Santa Barbara, Brooks Institute will continue to engage in creative conversation within the arts community of Southern California and beyond. Artist Reception: October 1st, 5-8pm. We have collaborated with some of our favorite local artisans for this reception including: The Blue Owl, Municipal Winemakers, Telegraph Brewing Co., McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream, Warbler Records, and Le Chambre Photographique.

The following year, in 2014, Gianmarco produced a music video for the Movember Foundations that went on to raise over $30,000 and won Best Music Video at
the Oxnard Film Festival.
Gianmarco, along with Derek Gordon, previously of Fox Studios, are currently in negotiations with Revolt TV for an untitled, ten-episode series. Represented by UTA,
the duo is also in talks with the Syfy channel for a reality concept they are developing. Gianmarco credits the growing interest in his work due to the strong relations
he has been able to form with various companies while represented by UTA.
As a journalist editors want concise story telling photos. As a photographer, I like images which have a bit of a mystery and often ask more questions than they answer, a struggle I deal with daily. I shoot for the editor or client, but I always shoot for myself as well.
Richard D. Brauer graduated from Brooks Institute in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Motion Picture Production and Undersea Photographic Technology. Today, Richard is the president of Brauer Productions, Inc., an independent film and video production company he founded following his graduation. He also went on to found the Maritime Heritage Alliance in 1982 and the Inland Seas Education Association in 1989.
After many years of film making and working with a wide variety of clients, Brauer received the Michigan Filmmaker of the Year award at the 2009 Traverse City Film Festival that was presented by filmmaker Michael Moore. Past recipients have been actor Jeff Daniels, writer Kurt Luedtke, and actress Christine Lahti.
Brauer has directed ten feature films and hundreds of corporate, non-profit, educational and commercial projects. He works as a Director / DP with many films in development. He is also a supporter of many independent filmmakers. He lives on an old fruit farm on Old Mission Peninsula near Travis City, Michigan, with his three adult children and four grandchildren.
Dan SandovalChengdu CHINA | Berlin GERMANY BA - '08
Dan Sandoval, a Brooks 2008 Bachelor of Arts graduate, worked on a few magazine shoots and underwater projects following graduation. In October, Dan returned to China where he had visited as part of his Documentary class. He quickly built a network among local magazines and began to gain recognition as a professional photographer within the city of Chengdu.
In January of 2009, he became a regular contributor for the magazine, Chengdoo Citylife. Dan also gained national exposure with a feature in Vista magazine later that fall. An international school in Chengdu approached Dan with the idea of teaching a photography class to their students. Beginning as a digital class, within two years, the program grew to include instruction in black and white photography complete with darkroom printing.
As his travel work grew and garnered more attention, Dan was invited to work on his first government project in China. This opportunity grew into a great partnership with the JiuZhai Valley National Park, and opened many other doors with local governments, including working as a photographer, travel advisor as well as the leader of a photography trip for the afore mentioned school. In 2012, Dan was hired on for a variety of large-scale projects while also conducting an eight-week photography seminar for adults. Earning Canon’s attention for these seminars, Dan began lecturing under the Canon Caravan Program. At the time, his
clients included TUI Travel, Vogue Magazine, and The Travel Trade Association. Dan found himself traveling to destinations around the world such as Indonesia, France, Switzerland, Morocco, and Turkey and throughout China.
To date, Dan has traveled to over 35 countries and leads trips all over the world, providing access to writers and photographers.
With a career that he loves, he can honestly say that he has experienced more in the last six years than most will experience in a lifetime. His current hope is to be able to work with Brooks in order to provide the current generation of students some of the life changing opportunities that he experienced as a student.
