Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School Alumnae

Spring Newsletter 2011

Happy New Year from everyone at

Church High School.

Page 2: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

As usual, the new academic year

started at a rapid pace with Prize

Giving at The Sage, Gateshead,

followed by Open Day, then the annual

School Production - ‘Disco Inferno’ - at

Newcastle College Theatre and finally

culminated in an Independent School

Inspection just before Christmas. Oh

yes, Christmas. I nearly forgot that. So, then we had the

Christmas Fair, the House Christmas Tree event, the House

Talent Competitions, the Staff Panto, the Carol Services and

the SNOW! The snow was incredible and did cause some

inconvenience - we never normally close our doors, but this

year was an exception.

Having coped well with the early fall in

November, I am sorry to report that we

had to enforce two

‘snow days’ in

December when the

whole of the North-

East ground to a

virtual standstill.

Anne Fine, OBE and award

winning children’s author, was

our special guest at Prize

Giving in September. Anne is

a familiar to everyone at

School, not just because of her

popular books which are

studied at Key Stage 3, but

because she regularly visits the

English department where she

inspires budding, young

writers with her Literary

Workshops. The girls were

delighted to listen to her address, in a packed Hall One at The Sage,

Gateshead, when she spoke of her school experiences and her

lifelong desire to tell and write her own stories.

Anne has written over fifty children’s books in her

career and eight for adults. Her latest, Our

Precious Lulu, has just been released by

publisher, Black Swan.

Page 4: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

She won the Carnegie Medal in 1990 for Google Eyes and again

in1993 for Flour Babies.

Appointed Children’s Laureate in 2001,

Anne became a fellow of the Royal

Society of Literature in 2003 and received

her OBE in the Queen’s Birthday

Honours list.

In the mid-1990s, one of her most

enduring characters was immortalised by

Hollywood in the shape of Robin Williams

in his portrayal of Madame Doubtfire

and as Anne told us,

“Love it or hate it, the film certainly paid

off the mortgage!”

Guests at The Sage also enjoyed performances by the Senior Samba

Band and Year 8 dancing, “Diski” – the Official Dance of the 2010

South African World Cup. The Junior School re- produced part of

their opera on the history of Church High, which had been specially

written by the girls as part of our 125th Birthday celebrations, and

the Choir accompanied a slide presentation of old school

photographs dating back to the 1920s. The Choir went on to sing

several items from their very successful tour of Prague and we

enjoyed a ‘taster’ scene from the cast if ‘Disco Inferno’. The

Page 5: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

evening culminated with an uplifting speech by the Headmistress, Joy

Gatenby, punctuated by a photographical review of the year and

then the whole School took to the stage to perform a fabulous

version of Oh Happy Days’ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’

under the guidance of our Director of Music, Phil Noble.

As Events Coordinator here at NCHS, I must thank everyone who

played a part in rehearsing and delivering the varied items which

contributed to a really enjoyable evening. There was only a short

rehearsal period in which to finalise everything and make sure it was

sufficiently high enough quality to perform and I am exceedingly

grateful to the girls and their tutors for their commitment.

Next year’s Awards Evening will again take place at The Sage,

Gateshead on Thursday, September 15th at 6.00pm.

Page 6: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

Open Day, in October,

gave us the opportunity to

show School at its very best

to a great many visitors.

Pupils and staff always take an

enormous pride in what they do in their

departments but so too, do our Administrative

staff. Under the careful eye of our Site

Manager, Gentian Qeku, the School looked

positively gleaming and Andrea Fawcett and her

catering team produced wonderful

refreshments throughout the morning. None more so than

the bacon and sausage sandwiches which appeared in the staff

room before the doors opened!

The Alumnae helps, financially, with many of School’s projects, especially ones which directly impact on the pupils

The refurbishment of outside recreation areas and the displaying of old, previously archived, photographs are just two of our recent projects.

In November we had our Inspection and I am pleased to announce that their Report was excellent. Included here are extracts from a letter sent out to parents, but you can access the full report on the ISI website or at www.churchhigh.com.

Dear Parents We are delighted to tell you that the school has received an excellent report following our recent School Inspection. It is evident that the Inspection Team recognised the School’s many strengths and they pay tribute to the unique atmosphere of our school community. The Inspection was in two stages: an initial two day Inspection at the beginning of October when all regulatory requirements were checked and the Early Years Foundation Stage was inspected, followed by a further three day Inspection at the beginning of November. Throughout the course of both Inspection visits, lessons were observed and staff and pupils were interviewed. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) comprises Nursery and Kindergarten. It is inspected by a separate team of Inspectors against a statutory framework published by the

Page 9: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

DfE. Judgements very specifically have to be declared ‘Outstanding’, ‘Good’, Satisfactory’ or ‘Unsatisfactory’. The rest of the School (Transition to Year 13) is inspected according to the Independent Schools’ Framework, as approved by Ofsted. In their judgements, Inspectors are encouraged to vary the adjectives they use to describe the four judgement outcomes of ‘Excellent’, ‘Good’, ‘Satisfactory’ or ‘Unsatisfactory’. In this report, the Inspector has used ‘Excellent,’ Outstanding’ and ‘Exemplary’ to describe judgements of the highest order and these all carry equal weight. You will all be as pleased as we are to know that within the report we found no ‘Unsatisfactory’ or ‘Satisfactory’ judgements, 11 ‘Goods’; 2 ‘Very Goods’, 24 ‘Excellents’, 13 ‘Outstandings’, 1 ‘Exemplary’ and even 2 ‘Exceptionals’!

An Inspection report as good as this only comes about through the hard work of the staff and the support of the school’s pupils, parents and Governors. Church High is blessed with most able, committed staff, wonderful girls and a truly supportive body of parents and Governors and this comes across strongly in the report. May we thank you all for being quite ‘Exceptional’ parents and for entrusting us with the care of your ‘Outstanding’ daughters! Yours sincerely Joy Gatenby and Judith Cunningham

Page 10: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

Congratulations indeed!

The Christmas fair was well attended despite the heavy snow. With a lovely variety of stalls and NCHS House rooms full of games and activities managed to we raise nearly £1000 for School funds.

Page 11: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

The Senior Carol Service was a

wonderful occasion. All the pews at St George’s Church , Jesmond were filled with parents, friends and Alumnae helping

School to celebrate Christmas in a truly special way. The Choir were accompanied by a Brass Section for

John Rutter’s ‘Christmas Lullaby’ and our Orchestra enhanced the congregation‘s singing beautifully.

Readings were written and read by pupils from throughout the Year groups and the retiring

collection , £297, went to MENCAP. Congratulations and many thanks to everyone who

took part in , or enjoyed attending, the Service.

Just had to contact you to say how much I enjoyed the Carol Service yesterday. I thought the music was absolutely wonderful. Please will you pass on my congratulations to the Head of the Music Department. The performances from the orchestra, both choirs and the two soloists, were, from every aspect, fantastic! I`m hoping that there will be enough room for grandparents in the U.R. Church for the Junior Carol Service on Thursday. It is lovely being more involved with school again now that Alice has joined the Juniors. Dorothy Jenkins Class 1956

Page 12: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

The Staff enjoyed a Christmas meal

‘in-house’ one evening after school,

which included a Champagne

Reception courtesy of the

Governors. This was to thank them

for all their hard work leading up to

and during the ISI Inspection.

Then there was the House Talent Show to enjoy. With drama, singing and dancing from each of the four Houses, the remainder of the School were fully entertained on the penultimate afternoon of term. The climax was still to come….and as with all treats, the best was left until the very last day…… The Staff Pantomime was another masterpiece of production from Miss Hall as she proudly presented, The Wizard of Oz, NCHS style

The Alumnae

Dinner 2011

will be held at Firenze’s Italian Restaurant, on the corner of

Holly Avenue West and Osborne Road. The restaurant is

owned by the son of an Alumnae and the food served is

reputed to be some of the best in the area. James Smith has

put together a lovely, light summer menu and included a

reception drink on arrival. A gluten-free alternative is

available.

The date is Wednesday June 29th - 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. - and

tickets cost £20. This does not include any drinks which you

might want to purchase to accompany your meal – please pay

as you go, or join together with your table, and order what you

wish. We realise that many guests will be driving and will not

be requiring wine in the price of their ticket.

School will be open from 4.30 until 6.30p.m. that

evening, enabling Alumnae guests to come and look

round and to visit our annual GCSE/A Level Art

Exhibition. Please do come and enjoy a pre-dinner

Page 15: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

‘Drinks and Canapé Reception ‘in our Art Department

before moving onto the restaurant. Firenze is less than 5

minutes walk from school and there will be ample parking

in either of the School’s two car parks or in the small car

park at the restaurant.

To purchase your ticket, or make a provisional booking,

please telephone the Alumnae Office on 0191 2814306

A New Approach to our Newsletters

In an effort to save on wastage, both financial and material,

we intend to make a 2011 inventory of all Alumnae members

on our mailing list. We are asking that you complete the

enclosed form which will update our register and address lists

and also select your preferred method for receiving your

Newsletters.

Many members now have access to computers and may

choose to have an electronic newsletter sent to their email address.

Some may prefer simply to log on to the NCHS website

www.churchhigh.com

where they can read the Newsletters on the Alumnae pages..

Others may just like to continue to receive a hard copy/paper

copy – it is comforting to have a booklet to hold - and often

these are passed on to friends and family to read.

Please do help us update our system and take a few moments

to record your details and send them in to us either by post or

by email:

[email protected]

Thank you.

Page 17: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

The launch of our Facebook pages has been very

successful and, as you can see from this recent update

email, we are getting lots of ‘hits’ as more and more Old

Girls discover them.

There are several sites listed on Facebook with Church

High in the title, but the two official sites are the Church

High Alumnae (Organisation) page as shown below

If you haven’t viewed either page and become a ‘friend’ yet, please do so now as it is a great way to keep in touch and pass on any news that you might wish to share.

Page 18: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

These two, lovely old photographs were recently discovered in

a pile of random papers and passed on to us to archive. The

trouble is, we know very little about them as they simply say

Winter on the back of one and Summer on the back of the

other! Presumably this was referring to the uniforms, but if

anyone out there recognises the girls or the situations which

led to the pictures being taken, I would love to know more.

Whilst on the subject of old photos, it was good to be able to

supply Wendy Thornton, Class of 1965, with a replacement

Panora School Photograph, taken on 9th May, 1955 when she

was in First Year. Wendy says that she clearly remembers the

photo being taken as she was on the front row and has had a

wonderful time since receiving the copy putting all the names

to faces!

Page 19: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

Trudy Parker is looking to contact two of her old classmates

from 1959/60 - Margaret McPhail was last heard of when she

lived at Hexham and Lyn (Lynne?) Storrier. Neither of these

ladies are on the database, so if you know them, please would

you pass on Trudy’s request. Anyone who knew Trudy’s

sister, Margaret, from the Class of 1961 might like to contact

her too.

Claire McKenzie (www.clairemusic.co.uk) should be very

proud of herself! Not only was she awarded a first class

Masters Degree with Distinction from RSAMD in Musical

Direction, but she also received the Paul Kelly Memorial award

for services to drama and immediately passed on her financial

gift to the RVI Teenage Cancer Trust. Claire spends much of

her time directing music for the Edinburgh Fringe and has had

some brilliant reviews –

Barbara Morden’s book release went well and she has once

again promised to donate a copy to the Library.

Judy Yates and Benita Brown are back in communicating

once more.

We have lost touch with -

Mrs H A Shell formerly of Blakelaw Road, Alnwick

Miss J Mak formerly of McCracken Close, Gosforth

Mrs C Pickering whose last address was in Brunton Park

and Miss Fiona Mutch.

If anyone can help re-connect us please do get in touch,

but we are pleased to welcome back:

Barbara Diane Johnson (née Sutton) Class of 1961.

Barbara has been both a teacher and solicitor since

leaving school and it is with thanks to her sister, Gillian

Hedworth (Class of 1966) for putting her back in touch

with us.

Amanda Streets, Class of 1975 is back in email contact.

She now lives in the beautiful Scottish Borders and Harn Crumbly, (née Harneet Jagpal), Class of 1995, was

compelled to update us on all her news. She is now a

lawyer in Leeds and married to Police officer, Daniel.

Harn was also able to tell us that her friend, Lynsey

Patterson also got married in 2010 at Doxford Hall (now

Archer) and Faith Kitson (née Henderson) and Olivia

McPhee (née Galletley) were both there to enjoy the

wedding. Harn’s sisters were at School – Sarita de

Gruchy, Class of 1993, had a little boy in March last year

and youngest sister, Kiran, Class of 1999, left BAE

systems to start a PGCE in Manchester.

Page 22: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

Niyckhola Pidgoen, Class of 2005,

graduated last summer with a 2:1 BSc

(Hons) in Psychology with Sports

Sciences from Northumbria. She is

currently studying for her Masters in

Applied Positive Psychology at the

University of East London and works

as a Personal Trainer and NVQ

Assessor. Travelling back from

London in May 2009, Niyckhola read

an article about Paul Sinton-Hewitt (

Heroes of Running Award 2009) and

was inspired to follow in his footsteps

and set up a Parkrun project here in

Newcastle.

Parkrun aims to build communities through running, regardless of

age or ability. It took her six months of hard work liasing with

sponsors and Newcastle County Council but it is now a regular

weekend feature for many locals. Newcastle parkrun is a FREE

weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place

every Saturday at 9am in Exhibition Park. It is not a race against

other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you

want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan.

It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female,

young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this

beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to

Page 29: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability –

this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking

part is easy – just register in advance by 6pm on the Friday before

your first ever parkrun here. The great thing is that you only ever

need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning

and get yourself there!

After the run, if you don’t have to get off straight away, there will be

the chance to socialise with everyone at the Café to maybe swap

stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of

tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running

community.

So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started

on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use

this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come

along and join us.

What is Newcastle parkrun? It is a 5km run - it's you against the clock.

When is it? Every Saturday at 09:00

Where is it?

It's run in Exhibition Park, Newcastle Upon Tyne. See Course page for more details.

Page 30: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

What does it cost to join in?

Nothing - it's free! But please register in advance.

How fast do I have to be? We all run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!

Newcastle parkrun needs you! It is entirely organised by volunteers - email [email protected] to help.

We're friendly! Every week we grab a post parkrun coffee at Willis Café, 23-25 Clayton Road, Jesmond, NE2 4RP - please come and join us.

Reunion after 52 years! It is with great pleasure that I can announce the reunion of two old

school friends who have been apart for over 52 years! After six months

of slow research the Alumnae records managed to re-unite Amanda

Nicholas de Lett and Anthea Robson, both from the Class of 1960.

Amanda left the school in 1958 and lost touch with her friend and it was

only through reading an old Alumnae newsletter, which featured a

reunion of the Class of 1957, that she realised one of the ladies who

attended was the older sister that best friend! The only difficulty was that

Amanda lives in the Canary Isles and her friend’s sister lives in Canada!

But, after several ‘phone calls , all turned out well and Anthea was

discovered alive and well living in Tadcaster. Emails and telephone calls

have been flying across the sea since early January and we wish them

every success catching up on all those years of news.

Page 32: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

We are very sad to report the death of Judith Shaw (née Moat) Class of 1957.

Judith was a great friend and ardent supporter of the ‘Old Girls Club’

as it used to be known, but was no less enthusiastic about helping

with Alumnae projects when I became co-ordinator. One of a group

of Old Girls famous for their renditions’ of The School Song back in

the 50s, Judith was responsible for its return to common use when

she resurrected it for her famous 40 Years On reunion and again at

the 50 Years On get-together in the summer of 2007. She was

extremely proud of the fact that out of a year group of 64 pupils, she

was still in touch with fifty of them - not a surprising fact to anyone

who knew her well!

The Alumnae are very grateful to Judith’s life-long friend, Sheila

Bennett (née Pritchard) and to her husband, John , for putting

together a short piece about Judith’s life which we are pleased to

include in this edition. However, we are aware that many of Judith’s

friends would like to

contribute their

memories and would

welcome your thoughts

and photographs.

Please email, or post

them to us and we will

try and include them in

the next newsletter.

JUDITH SHAW

I arrived in Mrs.Stuart’s class at the Church High School, in the Spring Term of 1949; a new girl just 9 years old and not knowing a soul, but it wasn’t long before Judith and I became special friends. A friendship that lasted a lifetime. Those of you who knew her will remember her bright, bubbly character, full of energy and fun. Always enthusiastic about whatever we were involved in. She loved games and swimming, sang in the choir, played the piano, etc etc. She may have been good at art too but I can’t remember as I wasn’t!! She left school after the Lower Sixth and went to Secretarial College in Newcastle and then worked as a dental nurse at Raymond Stubley’s practice in Gosforth. Her love of and natural ability in sport led to her playing centre forward for Newcastle Ladies hockey team and she played tennis for Portland Tennis Club in Jesmond. In 1961 she married John and became a farmer’s wife, living at Pittington, where their twin boys, David and Peter were born in 1962. In 1971 they opened Durham Squash Club, the first privately owned squash club north of London. She and John spent the rest of their working life there. Judith did all the secretarial work for a membership of 1200 as well as being a caring mother and a wonderful wife. With her tennis background, she became a very good squash player, representing the County on numerous occasions and winning the Durham Squash Club championship. She also held posts of Secretary and Chairman of Selectors on the County Committee. Judith also took a great interest in coaching and encouraging younger players.

Page 34: Alumnae Spring Newsletter 2011

After running the club for almost nineteen years they sold it in 1989 and Judith put her energy into voluntary work at St Oswald’s hospice for sixteen years. She also spent a lot of time playing and teaching bridge. This gave her immense pleasure and she made many new friends. Family and friends were always Judith’s priority. She was delighted that both her sons married and each family had two girls. Her four grand-daughters, ages ranging from eleven to eighteen, were always at the top of her list; she loved having them around her and spending time with them. She relived her childhood love of horses and riding with one of the grand-daughters living locally. The Old Girls from her year left school between 1956 and 1958 and at least fifty-six of us will always be very grateful to Judith for her endless efforts to keep us in touch. We had several big reunions and one very special one when twenty-nine of us spent a whole day back at school to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Old Girls came from America, Canada and all parts of the UK. A school tour, wonderful buffet lunch and an entertainment with some of the year as performers will not be forgotten by those who were there. Our dear friend, known to many of us as ‘Moaty’, has a special place in our hearts and we grieve with her family over her unexpected and early death.

Sheila Bennett.

Judith died on December 12th 2010.

John, David & Peter would like to thank you most sincerely for your kind expressions of sympathy and support in memory of Judith.

Our newsletter is enjoyed by Old Girls worldwide, as it keeps

them in touch with Church High. We are interested in all types of news, whatever the content. News does not have to be about a great academic success or an Honour in the New Year’s List! Often, just plain, old, homely news makes the

most interesting reading and touches the hearts of old friends. Please return to the Alumnae Office or email us with news/changes of circumstance and we will do our very best
