Poles from Sterner Lighting offer three essential capabilities:

• Single-seam welding between base plate and poleincreases strength and durability.

• Fully galvanized anchor bolts are supplied with a boltcircle template, both of which are available for advancedshipment to make installation easier.

• A long lasting durable finish is achieved with a multistagewashing process followed by a powder coat, anodized orpolyurethane finish.

Our products are designed to be easy to install and requireminimum maintenance. Their rugged construction keeps Sterner products looking and performing their best throughdecades of use.

We supply all of our non-hinged base aluminum poles with a flush handhole cover. We are able to do this because we internally sleeve the inside ofthe pole a minimum of 18" (L-base requires standard hand hole, and is notinternally sleeved). This provides the mounting area for the flush handhole, while increasing the overall strength of the base of our poles at thesame time. The end result is a clean finish detail that eliminates unsightlyweld marks or external covers.(Additional sleeve lengths are available to increase EPA ratings, contact factory for specificordering information.)

Recessed & Surface Hinge Base Poles

For ease of installation and service, use our surface or recessed hingebases on aluminum poles (20' or less). Eliminate ladders or lifttrucks by hinging the pole to the ground saving you time andmoney. Choose our unique recessed version to eliminateunattractive and obstructive base covers for streetscapeapplications. Please consult our factory for application andordering information.(No sleeve or hand hole required, all wiring is done in the base.)

Patented Break-AwayBanner Arms – BN

This patented (patent #4,720,204) device is designed tocollapse the banner arm if winds exceed allowable speeds,thus preventing the pole from reaching its maximumstress point. A stainless steel safety cable extends throughthe entire length of the break-away device to prevent thebanner and banner arm from falling to the ground whencollapsed. The break-away banner arm can accept either.75" or 1.25" pipe size banner arms. Please consult thefactory for ordering information.

Anodized Aluminum Poles

Our aluminum poles are available in the samestandard anodized colors as are our extrudedproducts. As we don’t weld additional attachments,our standard flush hand holes allow the final finishand colors to match and be uniform. We provide astylized finish that is durable enough to stand thetest of time or the harshest environments.Anodizing is extremely resistant to flaking,fading, and severe or saltwater environments.Consult our factory for possible extendedfinish warranty information.

Aluminum Pole General Specific ations

Pole ShaftThe pole shaft shall be a single piece of seamless extrudedaluminum tube, alloy 6063-T6. Tapered poles are spun-taperedfor additional strength. The rate of taper is 0.10" to 0.20" perfoot, depending on pole size. Shaft shall include an internalaluminum sleeve for additional strength and flush hand hole.(not required for hinge based poles). Sleeve thickness shall be0.1875" to 0.25" and a minimum of 18" in length, depending onpole size.

BaseThe base plate shall be cast aluminum, alloy A356-T6. ‘SSA’ polesare supplied with a two-piece aluminum base cover forattachment after pole is installed. ‘SSA’, ‘RTA’, and ‘RSA’ poles aresupplied with a two-piece aluminum base cover or castaluminum anchor bolt cover for attachment after pole isinstalled, depending on size of pole and base style.(Hinge base poles do not require a base cover.)

Anchor BoltsEach pole shall be supplied with four fully galvanized steelanchor bolts, and eight hex nuts and washers. Bolt circletemplates are included. Advance shipments of anchor bolts andtemplates are available upon request.

Wire AccessWireway access shall be provided via a flush hand hole or hingedbase. Hand holes are 2" x 4" in size for 5" diameter round and 5"square poles and smaller. Hand holes for larger pole cross-sections are 3" x 4" in size. Hand holes are centered 14" or 18"above the base of the pole, depending on size. A flush aluminumhand hole cover is supplied.

Powder Coat & Anodized FinishPoles shall be cleaned using a multistage washing process toremove oil, dirt, and other chemicals from the pole before it isfinished with a standard polyester urethane powder coat paint.Optional anodized finishes are available and shall use anelectrolytic process to oxidize and colorize the aluminum for afinish that is extremely resistant to flaking, fading, and corrosiveenvironments. Standard powder colors are dark bronze, black,white, and natural aluminum. Standard anodized colors arebronze (light, medium, dark), black, and natural aluminum.Custom powder, anodized, and wet finishes are available(contact factory for availability).

Steel Pole General Specific ations

Pole ShaftThe pole shaft shall be manufactured from a single piece of hot-rolled steel with an invisible single longitudinal weld (on afinished pole). Square pole shall have four soft radius corners. Therate of taper is 0.10" per foot for square poles and 0.14" per foot forround poles.

BaseThe base plate shall be hot-rolled steel attached by twocontinuous welds. A two-piece steel base cover is provided with the fixed base poles allowing for attachment after the pole is installed.

Anchor BoltsEach pole shall be supplied with four fully galvanized steelanchor bolts, and eight hex nuts and washers. Bolt circletemplates are included. Advance shipments of anchor bolts andtemplates are available upon request.

Wire AccessWireway access shall be provided via hand holes. Hand holes are3" x 5" in size for 6.5" diameter round or 6.5" square poles orsmaller. All other hand holes are 4" x 6". Hand holes are centered14" above the base of the pole. A steel hand hole cover is included.

Polyurethane finishPoles shall be cleaned with a solvent to remove grease and oiland sandblasted before it is finished with a standard aliphaticpolyurethane coating. Finish shall be U.V. resistant and capableto withstand continuous exposure to exterior conditions.Standard colors are dark bronze, black, white, and naturalaluminum. Custom powder and wet finishes are available(contact factory for availability).

Receptacles – DF, PRPSterner provides wet-location-listed power and photocellreceptacles as options for use in our poles. All receptacles areGround Fault Circuit Interrupt systems. Photocell receptaclesmay be installed in the top of the pole to avoid unsightlyattachments to the luminaires.

• DF – Duplex Ground Fault Receptacle(15 amp, mntd. 24" above grade)

• PRP – Photocell Receptacle with shorting cap at top of pole

POLE

Vibration Da mpener – VDSecondary mode vibration can occur when wind currents strikethe pole/luminaire combination from two different directions atthe same time. This commonly occurs when using post-topluminaires on aluminum poles over 25 feet in length, whenpoles are mounted above ground level (bridges, parking decks,etc.) or when environmental/geological features cause a passingwind to be redirected back against the poles. Vibrationdampeners are installed through the hand hole at poleinstallation. Sterner recommends that vibration dampeners beused when any of the following conditions exist.

• Poles are greater than 25' in length with a post-top luminaire installed.

• Poles are installed on a parking ramp.• Poles are installed on a bridge.• Poles are installed at an airport.• Poles are installed in a special wind region (e.g., Hawaii).

It is the responsibility of the specifier forcorrect pole selection based on local codes and standards for the location of the job.
