PREFACE

This series of Sub-sector Scan reports aim is to provide exporters, buyers, and investors with information

about the production and export capability of Dubai manufacturing sectors. The main sources of

information are the Statistics Department, Dubai World for Dubai External Trade, Industrial Database

of Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) (Offical Source: Ministry of Economy), and

Trade Map of the International Trade Center in Geneva.

The studies attempt to cover as much aspects as could be possible within the constraints of data

availability. Since Dubai trade data are not available for a full 2008 year at the time of publishing the

report, some figures were extrapolated to estimate the full year value.


OVERVIEW

Global & Regional Production

• Aluminum, which was produced commercially since over a century, has now the widest application among non-ferrous metals including construction, packaging, electrical transmission, and auto industry applications. The largest applications are in transport, packaging and construction sectors

• The world production of Primary Aluminum in 2006 according to CVM Minerals Limited was 33.97 tones p.a., and it was estimated to be 37.8 Mil tones p.a. in 2007. The geographic composition according to London Metal Exchange was 43% produced in Asia and 24% and 22% in Europe and America in 2001.

• The current GCC production of Primary Aluminum is estimated at 5% of world production. GCC region has the comaprative advantage of of natural gas resources. Natural gas makes about 25% of cost of production of Aluminum while Alumina, the raw material for Aluminum, accounts for 45% of cost of production.

World Trade• The global imports of Aluminum & Articles in 2007 registered US $156 Bil. and the growth rate of

imports between 2003-2007 was 20% p.a. Top importers were USA, Germany, and Japan.

• Imports of Unwrought Aluminum, Alloyed and not Alloyed, was about US $58 Bil. in 2007 and the corresponding import growth rate for 2003-2007 was 19-24% p.a.

• Imports of Aluminum Wire, Aluminum Waste & Scrap and Aluminum Cans for Beverages valued US $2.2, 11.7, 3.8 Bil. Respectively.

PRODUCTIONCapacityThere are about 37 factories in Dubai producing a variety of aluminum products ranging from basic aluminum, extrudes, aluminum structures to a variety of fabricated products as depicted by the table below. The Dubai based smelter Dubal, one of the largest single smelter in the world, has a capacity of around 945,000 tons p.a.; A comprehensive directory of industry operating in Dubai in Aluminum field is appended to this report. It provides contacts and production profiles of Aluminum industries in Dubai of which will facilitate business matchmaking.

Product RangeThe product range includes:

Alloys Ingots, Aluminum Accessories, AC ducts, Aluminum Paints, Aluminum coating, Air Diffusers, Casting, Aluminum Panels, Air Heaters, Corrugated Aluminum, Doors& Windows, Air Supply Grills, Extrudes, Furniture, Curtains, False Ceilings & Accessories, Partitions, Foils, Ingots, Sheets, Refrigerator Display Fridge, Rods, Wires, Scaffolds, and Utensils.


Dubai Production & Trade• There are about 37 factories in Dubai producing a variety of aluminum products ranging from basic

aluminum, extrudes, aluminum structures to a variety of fabricated products.

• The Dubai based company Dubal is among the largest single smelters in the world, with a current capacity of around 945,000 tons p.a.

• Aluminum imports and re-exports increased both in value and quantity while exports declined.

• The increase in imports is an indication of increasing domestic demand due to the booming economy particularly in construction.

• The Aluminum industry in Dubai exports a wide range of products to supply the aluminum downstream industry, the construction sector, the canning and furniture industry.

• Dubai exports more than 50 items of Aluminum products.

Key Markets in 2007• In 2007, the largest chunk of Dubai exports from Unwrought Not Alloyed Aluminum went to Netherlands

& Iran with contributions of 22% and 11% to the total Dubai exports of this product respectively.

• Unwrought Alloyed Aluminum went mainly to Netherlands and Turkey at 20% and 14% of the total Dubai exports from this product respectively.

• Dubai Aluminum Waste& Scrap markets were largely skewed to India which took a majority share of 61% with minor individual contributions by other markets.

• Dubai Aluminum Wire market was mainly concentrated in three countries namely: Egypt, Syria and Kuwait, among them they made 58% of total Dubai exports from this product.

Key Markets in Jan-Sept 2008• In2008(Jan-Sept),the pattern of key markets for Unwrought Aluminum was different from what it

had been in 2007. Three countries took 54% of Dubai exports, namely Netherlands,Malaysia and India. The last two countries were not among the key markets in 2007.

• The same was true for Alloyed Aluminum:Netherlands,India & Japan took 67%.

• Aluminum Waste & Scrap market was larhgely skewed to India as in 2007 with a lion share of 59% followed by Pakistan with only 9% contribution.

• Dubai Aluminum Wire markets were not so concentrated.The top three markets were Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt ,with 23%,19% and 17% shares of total Dubai exports from this product respectively.

Success and Driving Factors• Well established and pioneer domestic industry of primary aluminum.

• Existing Downstream Aluminum Extrusion industries which further support the Aluminum fabrication industry.

• Good domestic demand driven by the growing construction sector during the past years e.g for aluminum structures. The construction sector growth has, however recently, been affected by the international financial crisis, the continuity of this effect remains to be seen.

• Good domestic demand driven by local demand for food canning.

Opportunities• Top 10 imports by value in 2008 reveal potential possibilities for import substitution industries which

worth further exploration including the production of Aluminum Plates and Sheets, Aluminum Structures for the construction industries, Cans for Beverages.

THE TOP EXPORTED PRODUCTS

Key Exported Products in 2007• In 2007-2008 top exports of Aluminum were primary Aluminum, Aluminum Wire, Aluminum Scrap

and can for Beverages. The value of exports of these products was 2.1 and 1.3 Bil. In 2007 and 2008 respectively, accounting for 86% and 88% of total Aluminum exports.

• Aluminum Cans for Beverages moved to the third position in 2008 from the fifth position in 2007, while Aluminum Wire moved to the fifth position.
