Memory l an e
the Meeting of the Great rivers national scenic Byway isn’t your average roadway. Road trips
taken as a small child yield return trips as a grown adult. It’s a road where youthful traditions of apple picking and
eagle watching are revived, and the journey leads to new traditions of winery hopping, antique shopping
and adventure seeking moments. It’s the road most travelled because of its exceptional
scenic beauty — 33 miles of roadway cradled by the rolling waters of the
Mississippi River and majestic limestone river bluffs. It’s the
relaxation you’ve yearned for in a getaway, and the
road trip you won’t soon forget. Set the
cruise control because your next moment
lies ahead.

let’s driveYour byway journey begins in Hartford at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers where the Lewis & Clark journey began. Follow the roadway north through Wood River, a town that
sprang up in the 1920s with the opening of the Standard Oil Refinery. The byway bends with the river until you arrive in Alton, one of America’s great river towns steeped in history and flowing with cultural experiences. In Godfrey, the natural landscape takes center stage with expansive river views found in the shadow of the bluffs. Peeking out from the byway, catch a glimpse of early Americana in Elsah, known as "the village where time stood still.” Finally, the Mississippi and Illinois rivers converge in Grafton, where you can celebrate life on the river with wineries, shopping and unique festivals year-round. Your byway journey comes to an end at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, with outdoor adventures and magnificent scenic views in Illinois’ largest state park.
Get ready to make miles of moments along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. Your journey starts noW.

an ePiC journeyWith an order from President Jefferson in hand, Lewis & Clark prepared to embark on the journey of a lifetime across the uncharted western United States. The lewis & Clark state Historic site in Hartford tells the story of the five months the Corps of Discovery spent preparing for the expedition at the Camp River Dubois. The main gallery space is a visitor favorite, featuring a 55-foot full-scale keelboat with one side “cut away” to show how the men packed the boat. You can even experience the rustic conditions of camp life with a trip to the fortified encampment, located behind the museum. Seasonal festivals and events at the site bring history to life with re-enactors, demonstrations and period entertainment. Complete your historic journey with a visit to the lewis & Clark Confluence tower, where you can view the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers from 150 feet in the air.

WalkinG WitH linColnAlton, Illinois may not be the first place that you think of when you think Abraham Lincoln, but you’ll quickly change your mind when you follow Lincoln and soldiers from North and South along alton’s lincoln & Civil War legacy trail. Gaze upon the lovejoy Monument and reflect in awe on Elijah Lovejoy’s courage and conviction, dying defending the rights of free speech and freedom of the press. Step back in time at lincoln-
douglas square to see the last of the senatorial debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Though Lincoln lost the election, the debate launched him into national prominence which led to his presidency. In the shadow of the Confederate Monument, pay your respects to the more than 1,300 Confederate soldiers that perished at the alton Prison during the Civil War. Travel to all ten sites and plan an extra stop at the alton Museum of History & art to see how the
currents of our nation’s history changed in these moments.
iMMersed in tHe PresentOnce you build your connection to the past, return to the present to experience the art and culture inspired by the flow of the rivers. Beautiful
gardens, concerts in the park and artists in action, all offer a glimpse of a present culture that cherishes its rich and storied past. In the heart of Downtown Alton, the jacoby arts Center showcases the artwork of budding artists. Monthly acoustic concerts and poetry readings blend performance art and visual art in an inviting atmosphere. The local talent takes center stage at the alton little theater, the oldest community theater in Illinois. Each October, the Alton City Cemetery comes to life for vintage voices, in which actors portray characters from Alton’s spirited beginnings.Pause for just a Minute to refleCt on tHe HistoriC MoMents of tHe Past, WHiCH CHanGed our future forever.

Lewis & Clark graced the pages of your history book as a kid, and now, you’ve pulled up at the lewis & Clark state Historic site to check out the real story. You may have come to casually browse, but you’ll leave craving another slice of the Lewis & Clark story.
Let’s face it. These guys were incredible. You probably agonize over what to pack for a three day getaway, and these guys packed for a two year trek across the country. They had to be prepared for anything and everything – encounters with Native Americans, unidentified creatures and uncharted terrain. You’ll be amazed as you walk through the museum, moving from exhibit to exhibit, feeling their anxieties, their sense of duty and their strength to proceed on this epic journey into the great unknown.
You’re not done yet. With a grey sky overhead and a cool dampness in the air, you enter through the gate of Camp Dubois, a replica of the fortified encampment where the men trained and prepared for the expedition. You’re feeling a little cold and tired from a day of touring, but the comforts of your hotel room are not too far away. Greeted by a re-enactor in military garments, you move from cabin to cabin viewing cramped quarters, dirt floors and modest furnishings. All at once, the camp becomes real. The journey becomes real. In that moment, Lewis & Clark become more than two guys in a history book, and you find yourself to be their new biggest fan.
You can encounter Lewis & Clark and be a part of the memorable journey each time you visit the Lewis & Clark site.

Eight stories in the air, on top of the Melvin Price Locks & Dam, you have a keen eye on the rushing waters flowing below, stretching out as far as the eye can see. It’s a little intimidating, and you feel small in comparison to its magnificent stature - nearly a mile wide and 2,340 miles long. A towboat slowly pulls into the locks, pushing 15 barges full of grain. This isn’t just any river. 92% of the nation’s exports and 78% of the world’s feed and grains travel this river. 40% of all waterfowl depend on this river for seasonal migration. You’re staring down at the mighty Mississippi River, awe-struck by its magnificent power.
Experience the power of the Mississippi River every day of the week at the national Great rivers Museum, located at the Melvin Price Locks & Dam. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the Mississippi River. Through interactive displays, discover how the mighty Mississippi River has shaped the culture, history, economy, ecology and people of the region. Take a guided tour of the Melvin Price locks & dam, the largest locks on the river, to gain a better understanding of the river system as a main artery for domestic and international commerce.
Plan a visit during the annual eagle migration, as eagles soar above the river looking for their next meal. View eagles with spotting scopes from the warmth of the museum, or venture out on a tour of the locks and dam for a closer view of eagles at play.
You’ve probably crossed over a river or two in your travels, but you haven’t seen anything like the Mississippi River. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover the river with a visit to the National Great Rivers Museum.
