Victorian art: town and country, romance and reality

Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 April 2015

“God made the country but man made the town” was a view widely held in the Victorian period. This led to pictures of country idylls and sordid streets becoming popular. However, the visual legacy of this period is far more complex and the paintings, cartoons and photographs studied on this course contradict these simplistic views.
