We suggest these two walking tours those who want to explore the culture of Dubrovnik in a short period of time. The walking tours depart frequently from Onofrio’s fountain (picture on the left) near Pile gate. Just look for the red umbrella; there are two tours to choose from:
A STORY ABOUT THE WARAt the very start of the 20th century, the Balkan Peninsula
was perceived as ‘the restless corner of Europe’. Many who
endeavor to explain what was actually going on feel that
the deep, underlying reasons were not easy to understand.
The historical background will help you to see how recent
conflicts have their roots in the past. Find out some of the
misconceptions people had about the recent war, what it was
like to live in a besieged town, and how life here eventually
returned to normal.
THE OLD JEWISH QUARTERDid you know that one of the oldest synagogues in Europe is
located in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town? Jews came to
Dubrovnik in the 15th century and made an important cultural
contribution to the development of the Republic. This walk
provides an opportunity to understand Jewish life in Dubrovnik
and how it has changed through history. The walk goes along
Žudioska Street where the Jewish community was once
situated. You will also visit the famous Synagogue established
in the 15th century, re-built in 1652 and still in use today.
