What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that

we all get older eventually, starts to get in the way of how we can look after our four legged companions? What if we can’t walk them anymore? What if their health and wellbeing becomes compromised because we just can’t do as much as we used to be able to?

A lot of elderly and ill pet owners become very depressed and worried about the fate of their beloved animals and feel that the best thing they can do for them is to rehome them. This

Steve Brine's monthly ColumnAs I write this month’s

Forum column the news is dominated by foreign

affairs. It seems the best laid plans of needing to focus on domestic policy, while critical to the fate of any Government, are often at the mercy of news from around the world.

My first year as your local Member of Parliament has not been without its challenges in this respect. Big public sector

reforms in health, education and welfare test your metal - change will always find many opponents - but voting to commit British service personnel is not something any MP takes lightly. I wish all those working to keep us safe here at home a safe and speedy

return themselves.Parliament has also considered the Energy Bill recently. This flagship piece of legislation

will, among many other things, bring decent home insulation to millions for the first time through our 'Green Deal'. The Bill needs some toughening up in my view and I will be arguing this alongside many others in Parliament but I spoke passionately in favour of its introduction in the recent 2nd Reading debate. See more on this via www.greenwinchester.com.

Locally, I have opened a new hospital garden at the RHCH created exclusively by inmates at HMP Winchester as part of their rehabilitation programme, visited Henry Beaufort School to meet their new Head teacher and I continue to spend a lot of time with local Children’s Centres (including our own at Sunbeams) as we seek to navigate a course through some of the changes coming down the track. Susie and I also attended the farewell service for Bishop Michael recently. He will be sorely missed across the Diocese of Winchester and I wish Michael and Lou a very peaceful

retirement.I would also like to warmly congratulate Cllr Ernie Jeffs on his re-election to represent The Alresfords on Winchester City Council. I have worked very closely with Ernie for many years now and know we will continue to work well together for the benefit of all residents in the ward. We look forward to seeing you at our next Saturday morning ‘street surgery’ on the corner of Broad/West Street.

Finally, as another part of delivering on my promise to be a fully open and accessible MP, my brand new website has now gone live. It contains full details of my constituency, Westminster and media work and is fully integrated with my You Tube TV channel. It also now carries a very comprehensive local events listing, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have one to promote. The site is at www.stevebrine.com and my email is [email protected]

Steve BrineMP for Winchester

the Cinnamon trustfortunately is not true. The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.

A network of 15,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.Unfortunately not every area in the UK is filled

with volunteers. We have a wonderful dog; in the Alresford area whose owner is now totally unable to walk him. We desperately need some volunteers in Alresford, even if they can only offer an hour a week to this lovely dog, it will improve his quality

of life so much, plus it will give her owner peace of mind. If anyone can help call Meredith on 01736 758 707 or via email [email protected] Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk

Jackies County CornerAfter the flurry of

election activity, things get back to normal, but

in Council terms, this is the New Year, with celebrations and goodbyes for councillors at City, Town and Parish levels, a review of the year past at Annual Parish Meetings and plans for the future.

The Wedding celebrations were varied and though I managed to attend three on the day, I know that there were hundreds of celebrations around the division! Thanks to all the organisers and contributors: I think we all agree it was a really good day.The County Councillor Grant scheme starts again this month: less money in the pot this year, (just £8000) but I want to offer a small sum to those Parishes who wish to stage a whole village celebration for the Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. Last year, several organisations w e r e d i s a p p o i n t e d : unfortunately the pot of money is limited, and not every cause needs money from this grant to go ahead. So, please

contact me if you have an idea for a new club, organisation or event. Children’s Centres are still on the agenda as I write: if you are a Grandparent and perhaps you care for a child whilst parents work, you are very welcome to use the local centres too: please contact me if you are unsure how to do this.

The new Mobile Library rota starts in July: if you use the Library (or might want to in the future), and are worried about this change, you can ask on the van this month, or telephone me and we can see how you can receive the personal service which is being offered instead.

Footpaths tend to get overgrown at this time of year. If you have a hedge alongside a path, please think of others, and cut it to keep within your boundary. And if you can’t negotiate a path because it is overgrown, either in the country or the villages please contact your Parish Council initially, so we can work with you to solve the problem.

Droxford Country Fair is being held on Saturday 4th June, from 12:30

pm until 4 pm. Following the success of recent years, and with your support, the Fair will again be held in Droxford Square and adjacent gardens of the Manor House and Old Rectory. Please follow signs for Parking in the Recreation Ground. There is a small entry fee of £1 per adult and children under 16 are free. A programme will be provided. Refreshments are available and will include barbecue, teas, ice creams, Pimms and other drinks. Musical entertainment will be provided

Droxford Country Fairby the excellent Ferdies Friends. The Fair will include a fun dog show for which details are available on local posters, country crafts and other rural interests; bee-keeping; swordsmanship demonstrations with a chance to join in; puppet show; a range of stalls with local produce, 2nd hand books, bric-a-brac etc; an always popular raffle with excellent prizes; range of games for all ages including ferret racing, coconut shy, darts, splat the rat etc; and Droxford School will also be contributing to the entertainment. Hope to see you there. Tickets: £1 adults. Children under 16 free. Contact: 07803 115 [email protected]

Cathedral Attendance Levels RiseAttendance levels at regular weekly services in Church of England cathedrals have increased significantly again this year, by 7%, say the latest statistics from the Archbishops' Council's Research and Statistics Unit.

Since the turn of the millennium, they have steadily grown by a total of 37%, which is about 4% on average each year. At Sunday services alone, 15,800 adults and 3,100 children and young people are usually present while over the whole week the figures rise (by 73%) to 27,400 and 7,600 respectively. Westminster Abbey adds, on average, 1,800 people each week to these numbers.

A celebration of street arts and outdoor performanceHat Fair is Britain’s

longest running festival of street

theatre and outdoor arts - taking place in Winchester on the first weekend of July every year. The 2011 festival will take place on Friday 1st - Sunday 3rd July - put it in your diaries now!

As ever, Hat Fair will continue to uphold its reputation for presenting innovative and beautiful outdoor performances, exciting, unique and highly skilled small-scale shows and an engaging programme of community arts and education, woven into the

heart of the beautiful city of Winchester.

Hat Fair offers three fun-filled days jam-packed with hundreds of breathtaking performances from many national and international companies, taking place throughout Winchester’s

ancient streets. Even in this economically uncertain world, Hat Fair doesn’t charge the audience a penny for any performances. The shows are free to view for all, but you can show your appreciation by putting coins (or notes!) in the artists' hats after the performance.

Look to be Ruthless

Back in November of 2010 when the arctic tundra had levelled

the playing field on garden aesthetics and the sap freezing temperatures were quietly and insistently killing my bay trees, I would not have believed in the concept of June and yet here it is again.

Flaming June, when at last all my tiny little seed children raised in pots and pans, which I have been nursing and coaxing through the early months, are finally in the ground. Once the plants are in, staked and looking fresh, spring and early summer flowering is but a memory, the trick (smoke and mirrors) is to try and keep it that way. Observation is the gardener's finest tool. Spotting problems early, whether it be an infestation of aphids or the first signs of wilt, seeing is the

key to success; there is no doubt that the eyes have it.

Immediately the season begins I start making notes for next year, what to sow later or earlier, what to stake, what to move, what to divide, what to discard, don’t be a gardener that cannot root out a plant self seeded and growing in the wrong place, there is very little which is ‘natural’ about a garden, it is an artificial collection of plants brought from a variety of countries and in many cases highly hybridised that are paraded like a three ring circus and you are the ringmaster; if you allow every interloper equality your garden is lost.

Let plants grow how they want, but not necessarily where they want… Of course we all benefit from the serendipitous occurrence of an accidental combination and take credit without apology... but sometimes the difference between a good garden and a not so good garden, is not what is put in, but what is discarded.Julian Blackwell

Kites and CoffeeEnjoy an exhibition of

John Browning’s kites and a cup of coffee on

Saturday 25th June 2011, John Pearson Hall at 9.30am onwards. Kites are usually remembered as children’s toys. Children of all ages love kites but there can be much, much more to kites than just toys. In many parts of the world, mostly in the East, kites have great significance. They are deeply ingrained in the culture of many countries. Making and flying kites is seen as a way of life and in such countries as China, Japan, India, Thailand and Indonesia, kites have been very popular for centuries.

Here, kiting became really popular in the 70’s when two-string acrobatic kites appeared. Today, kites made from modern materials are

made and flown with great enthusiasm by thousands of people who flock to kite festivals all over the world.

Whilst modern kites, made from nylon, carbon fibre and all sorts of other materials have developed to become colourful works of great ingenuity, traditional kites made from paper and bamboo still hold a fascination for many people.

Over the years, I have made many modern kites of various designs but I have always had a real fascination for traditional kites made from paper, silk and other natural materials. Working with these materials is an artistic pursuit and the challenge of creating a flying kite gives me great satisfaction.

In aid of the zimpro charity (each £ will be matched by £9 from the European Commission) I shall be having an exhibition of some of my kites in the John Pearson hall on 25th June. Do please come along and see them.

TelephonesOur telephone lines are open from 8.30am Monday to Friday. The telephones are very busy for the first hour each morning so unless you are calling to make an urgent appointment we suggest you try leaving it until a little later in the day to call when our receptionists will have more time to help with your query.

Patient ForumThe Alresford Surgery Patient Forum met on 10th May. Some of the items discussed at the meeting, to help us develop the services we offer were:

Home visits for blood tests: following cuts to the phlebotomy service routine home visits for blood tests are no longer available. We strongly encourage patients to either come to the surgery or go to the hospital for their blood tests. However, the district nurses are able to visit housebound patients and can take blood samples if required. In case of any problems please contact the surgery.

Website: the meeting was given a brief demonstration of the surgery website. The website

is an excellent source of information regarding the services we offer, current surgery news (subscribers can receive this newsletter direct to their email inbox), repeat prescription requests, travel health information and forms as well as advice on dealing with common ailments. Please take a look!

The next Patient Forum will take place on Tuesday 11th October 2011 at 2pm. Please see our website for more information or to make comments or suggestions.

NHS HealthchecksSome patients will be receiving an invitation to attend for an NHS healthcheck. If you do receive an invitation we strongly recommend that you make an appointment.

Sun hill Junior School news Column

Welcome to the Sun Hill Junior column. Over the Spring term

we have been very busy in school completing a variety of activities to enhance our learning and most importantly have fun along the way and would like to share a few of them with you.

Over the past few weeks Sun Hill Junior School participated in the CLIC Sargent practice-a-thon, where we practised and performed to raise money to help children with cancer. Our musicians have raised money by getting people to sponsor them each time they practise and thanks to them we have raised just over £250. Everyone’s hard work was shown in a special assembly to show what they had been practising. We all agree that the practice-a-thon is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for children with cancer in a fun and interesting way. After experiencing this we hope more fundraising activities will be introduced as it really is a fantastic way to do some good.

We continued the music theme and on 1st April Suki Ellis, Ellen Parker, Maya Exelby, Maisie Tween, Trinny Defelice-Hubbard, Izzy Miller and Elosie Connell put on fantastic entertainment at the First Friday Café. The girls were very confident performers and they raised an impressive £31.36 for the PTA, well done! The parents stated that it was lovely to be entertained by the musicians and were delighted to have

such talented players in our school.

Just before Easter, Year 5 visited Basing House to learn more about how the Tudors lived. The day provided lots of different opportunities for investigation! Upon arriving, the group walked past the old mill and river to the site looking for clues of life in Tudor times on the way. Once they reached the site, they went up to the ruins of Basing House which was mostly destroyed in the Civil War. Here they had the opportunity to apply their problem solving skills, and used compasses and clues to pace out and find the different rooms. Although it was very cold they really enjoyed it! After lunch in an open air barn, the children went to a classroom where they looked at real Tudor artefacts and decided what they were made of and used for. After the opportunity to try out Tudor dress it was time to go back to school. Year 5 really enjoyed their day and made fantastic use of their learning back in the classroom.

As part of their Tudor theme, Year 5 have been learning all about the works of William Shakespeare.

To demonstrate this learning, they put on a fantastic performance of Macbeth to the school, with a second performance to their families. The children greatly enjoyed working on the play, as they adapted Shakespeare’s words to produce their very own version. All the hard work put into rehearsals by all of Year 5 truly paid off with a fantastic performance which they are all very proud of.

The Alresford Music Festival gears up to for its second year of success with a great

vibe and eclectic music.

The 2011 Alresford Music Festival is all set to make a big impact in Alresford on Saturday 18th June with a first class music event to suit all tastes. Entering the second year of the festival, plans are in place to create an event that takes this ‘community festival’ concept to another level.

In 2010 Alresford saw the first Alresford Music Festival come to town when, despite a few early hurdles, the event was deemed a great success. Since then the organisers have

A L R E S F O R DMUSIC FESTIVAL 2011

been hard at it taking on all the lessons learned last year and creating a bigger and better music festival for Alresford.

The 2011 Alresford Music Festival is headlining with the 90s Britpop band “Dodgy”, best known for their hit single “Good Enough” and accompanied by a host of top music from around the region ensuring another fantastic day out for all the family.

The festival will feature two stages of music with bands alternating between them to keep the music flowing. The full line-up includes Dodgy, ‘til Dusk, Reactor 1, Pressgang, Denovo, Hattie Jacques’ Playlist, Jambo Reign, The

Audio Guns, The Skore, Karma Sun, Hendrix gets the Horne, Ben Goddard, The Elizans, North Drive, Capital X and RattleWreck. And, as with any good festival, there will be a good supply of local food outlets, a large beer tent and other traders to keep the crowd entertained through the day. The younger members of the audience have not been forgotten either with a children’s Glade area which will offer an assortment of fun stuff to do and keep them amused right through the day.

The Alresford Music Festival line-up gets under way at mid-day (gates open from 11 am) and will run through to midnight finishing with a

fantastic light show. This not-for-profit event takes places at Perins playing field and will be supporting this year’s worthy causes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Alresford Youth Association.

Alresford IT specialist, First Option, has again offered up financial sponsorship for the festival - who could miss their fantastic banners draped over their office on Jacklyn's Lane – and they are joined by new sponsors Defensa International and a host of local contributors in the “Friends of the Festival”.

street act mixing comedy, stunts, clowning, audience participation and circus tricks. Also new for 2011 is the ‘Mini Mic’ stage. This will give children aged 5 to 12 years the opportunity to showcase what they have learned during the day. With 10 slots available for 2 minutes each, the children will have the chance to ‘sign up and show-off’ in front of friends and family.

Ample parking is available for the festival in Alresford though organisers are keen to encourage festival goers to leave their cars at home. Those who need to drive will be directed to the available spaces as they arrive in the town. Disabled parking for Blue Badge holders will be available on the Perins site.

Whilst music festival tickets will be available to buy on the day, those in the know suggest you should buy in advance to save queuing. A separate entrance will be available for ticket holders and wristbands will be issued at the gate for repeat entry.

Ticket prices have been reduced from last year to make the festival even more affordable to all. The standard adult price is now just £15 per person with concessions available to students and anyone under 18 year olds, families, groups and disabled festival goers.

The festival organisers are still looking to recruit more volunteers to help with the event on the day. Anyone interested should contact the operations director Laura Stagg on [email protected] or click on the Volunteers button on the website.

local charities, the Alresford Music Festival is based on the concept of the 3 yearly Eric Clapton Crossroads Festivals benefiting good causes, Veitch thought the idea should be applied here in the UK, and here in Alresford. Teaming up with fellow musician Brian Hayward they researched how to make the dream a reality and now four years on we are mightily glad they did!

The festival ’s catering stall holders will include plenty of local produce with Cresson Creative, cooking up a delicious meat and vegetarian barbecue, Bangkok Brasserie offering some great Thai cuisine, Loaded Skins for hot jacket potato delights, and Jose Burts spicing things up with their fantastic Mexican menu. Other stall holders include MooMix, Candy Corner, Lilac Daisy Bakery, Luvskin and Pickled Green Clothing making up a lively array of food and great local products.

The other essential for any festival – the beer tent – will not go unnoticed! The big-top circus style tent will be serving many of the local beers and wines that have recently put Hampshire on the brewers map.

The children’s Glade area will include entertainment from Perins Fun Camp with games, face painting and crafts available for 2 to 8 year olds, plus we're pleased to announce that this year we'll be introducing Aqua zorbing and the excellent Two Man Tent Show - an amazing

Three·Six·Five Hairdressing - specialists in new clients

You have your own needs and desires. That is why Three·Six·Five Hair Designers listen to what you say. They know the difference

between ordinary hairdressing and personal designing.

ImportantIf you make a mistake with clothes or make-up you can,

in many cases, take them back or at worse leave them in a drawer. Your hair is a very important part of your

appearance. It is ‘the gown you never take off’. So often ‘it is your mood-maker’. Yet getting what you want can be so frustrating.

Three·Six·Five TogethernessWe care about the way your hair looks between visits to the salon.

Three·Six·Five Hairdressers are specially trained. They use a ‘Five-Step’ recipe to make sure the successful balance of ingredients is right for each client. They know the value of asking the right questions and looking at all the key elements of a hair design which will work for you every day.

SpecialThey have a special service for new clients. If you

have always wanted to meet a top hairdresser to whom you could say ‘What would you do for me?’ now you have. Just ask for the Three·Six·Five Recipe service: like you ‘it’s a little special’. So friendly.

I was recently at a parents’ evening where the delights of the English Baccalaureate were being explained. It would seem that the top set would have no problem in achieving this qualification, which would be more than useful to them en

route to becoming ‘a doctor’, which was the example given.

The middle band would easily obtain this qualification if they were willing to take a language at GCSE, but if they chose not to, it might have a direct effect on them getting a university place. So, in essence, those with the Baccalaureate would stand a far greater chance of getting in than those without, but we weren’t to worry…

Then the options for the other sets were apparently ‘vocational’ courses at Eastleigh College or Sparsholt, where the course in animal husbandry was described as ‘the care of fluffy animals’.And there we have it, draw what analogies you will. The three ages of man, the class system, square pegs into round holes?

Let’s be clear: there have always been people who are overtly academic, and yes, through hard work and innate ability, they may well find their way into the ‘professions’. Likewise, there are those who, whilst they may not be in the top set, go on to have very successful careers in a myriad of fields, vocational and otherwise.

But what really gets me is the way in which the vocational courses, the trades, crafts and the ‘arts’ for that matter, are so often denigrated by those who consider them worthless, and worse still, who consider themselves superior because they are academic. Why do some hold with that attitude? The ‘care of fluffy animals’ is a case in point. Perhaps there is a lack of understanding that in Hampshire there are indeed animals to be looked after, whether it be tigers at Marwell, the occupants of fisheries, or horses, sheep, or cattle. It may be worth mentioning that there are acres of woodland and shoots to manage, let alone the large arable estates.

Ah, I hear you say, but there’s no money in agriculture and they are subsidiary careers. Comparatively that may be true, but there are plenty of people on the 6.10 a.m. Winchester to Waterloo who are coming to the end of a six-month contract with little hope of getting another, wishing they had a ‘skill’ to fall back on. Despite the differential in financial remuneration, are those of us that work in the ‘trades’ on the whole more content than those on the commute I wonder?

Here we get into deep water: it’s easy to stereotype the working demographic, when loving or loathing what you do on a daily basis occurs across the spectrum. But can it still be that to say ‘I work in

UP thE ARtS AnD thE CAREOF FLUFFy AnImALS

London’ continues to be one of the benchmarks of success, proof that you have ‘achieved’, whilst the vocations, trades, crafts, call them what you will, and the arts, for some are still considered a stigma, proof that you haven’t? In an area such as this are we still categorised by what we do, where we live and what we drive - and if so is that not a tad tragic? Yet when it comes to maintaining or improving the major financial investments that are a car and property, it is these trades that are called upon. If one can afford the very latest luxury car, it takes a specialist mechanic to make sure it always runs properly. And who do you call when you want to make improvements to your house? Ghost Busters? No. It will be any one of the highly skilled tradesmen that we have locally. Their craftsmanship will ensure your investment can only improve long-term, probably more reliably than any banker, currently at least.

With these habitual attitudes to the vocational careers, and with prevailing economic strife making apprenticeship schemes difficult to implement, some skills are under threat, and a few, such as flint walling and thatching, traditional to Hampshire, may soon peter out altogether.

The arts as a career choice are often pilloried, with those going to drama or art colleges seen as ‘copping out’. Yet we consume the arts daily through magazines, radio, television, cinema, books and the internet, on a massive scale .We will happily travel, sometimes thousands of miles, to visit the famous galleries of the world and the lovely Colin Firth got more airtime than Libya post the Oscars. I realise one can count the number of phenomenally successful actors on one hand, but the same applies to accountants, lawyers and architects: can you name them all?

Not all of us are destined for greatness but some of those who have achieved it, in a diversity of careers, have come from deprived and ill-educated backgrounds: it was not the A* that got them to the pinnacle but rather creative thought, drive and determination.

With an ideology that’s so ingrained, it’s hard to say whether society can break with the notion of the arts and vocational courses being inferior. We may appear to celebrate diversity in talents and abilities, but do we in reality? Let’s hope our educators really will strive to walk the walk as well as talk the talk, and gain the freedom genuinely to celebrate and actively support that diversity.

Up the arts and care of fluffy animals, I say! What do you think?

The British watercress season got off to a flying start with record crowds attending this year’s Annual Watercress Festival on Sunday (May 15). For the eighth year the small market town of Alresford and

‘capital of the Watercress world’ hosted the festival to celebrate the start of the new watercress season which runs from May to October. Sales of the quintessential English crop have already been boosted by the current hot spell with an increase of more than 30% on last year but with the new season now officially underway, and more hot weather forecast watercress sales are expected to be well up on last year.

Charles Barter of the Watercress Alliance, the main sponsor of the Festival said: “It was a tremendously successful day, attracting a record breaking crowd of up to 15,000 compared to last year’s 12,000. The Festival is a fantastic event that’s now highly recognised in the food calendar – it just seems to get bigger and better every year. Watercress is an important crop for both Hampshire and Dorset with the majority of UK watercress beds found in these two counties. Bumper sales will inevitably boost these areas’ economies. ”

The highlight for many was the annual contest to find the World Watercress Eating Champion, which this year attracted 18 entrants, with five of those being last minute entries. After a series of heats, the final victor was Rajesh Peter who has lived in Alresford for a year and a half but who was originally from India. The housekeeper and chef for Meon Valley MP, George Hollingbery, managed to consume two 80g bags of watercress in just 59.20 seconds. He failed, however, to break the record set at last year’s festival by local builder Sam Batho, of 49.62 seconds. Sam was unable to defend his title as he is currently on honeymoon in Mauritius and his new wife refused to delay their trip!

Rajesh was a late entry who had not planned to enter the competition but on seeing how fun it all looked plucked up the courage to put his name down. He said that he ‘loves the Festival and English people and enjoyed the atmosphere of the crowd’. Although a chef, Rajesh admitted that he hadn’t really eaten much watercress before but that now he has been initiated into the unique taste he will use it more in his recipes! The competition was one of the highlights of the day, but

there were many other activities on offer. TV celebrity and food writer, Sophie Grigson demonstrated some delicious recipes she had developed especially for the festival, naturally featuring watercress. There were also a series of cookery demonstrations by local chefs including Andy MacKenzie, Executive Head Chef at Lainston House Hotel in Winchester, and Cresson Creative’s Jennifer Laing, treating the crowds to a range of other watercress dishes. The spectacular festival cavalcade, which was led by the King and Queen of Watercress brought the first watercress of the season into the town while Hampshire Farmers’ Market showcased the best of local produce with other local companies highlighting the versatility of the crop. Watercress scones, watercress pesto, watercress burgers and watercress sausages were just a few of the goods on offer.

Sophie Grigson presented this year’s Watercress Festival Food Awards. These recognise the innovative way producers are working to include watercress in their recipes and products.Winners on the day included The Courtyard Tea Rooms in Alresford who scooped the prize for the Most Innovative Watercress Product with their savoury choux pastry filled with watercress and cream cheese.

Sole Butchers, Alresford’s local family butcher, was awarded the Best Traditional Watercress Product prize for their delicious watercress and beer sausages. And the winner of the Best Overall Product was Bowtell’s Farm Shop with their mouth-watering watercress soup. Bowtell’s source all their ingredients for their products from within a 10 mile radius of Alresford. Watercress is one of our original superfoods and is brimming with more than 15 essential vitamins and minerals. Gram for gram, watercress contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach. New research also shows it is emerging as an important player in the field of cancer prevention.

The event is organised by New Alresford Town Council, The Watercress Alliance (made up of Alresford Salads, Vitacress Salads and The Watercress Company), Alresford Chamber of Commerce, The Hampshire Farmers’ Markets, independent specialist shops and a host of other community groups.

Ok so was last months walk a little long? Well here’s one that is just an amble, under four miles and great for kids and dogs.

Park in Alresford, Alrebury Park or Perins. From Alrebury Park walk out onto The Avenue, turn left and walk down to the crossroads, turn left into The Dean. From Perins car park, walk out to the same crossroads and walk straight across.

Once at the bottom of The Dean follow the river path ahead of you to the Fulling Mill. Turn left here and take the path that runs across the front of the cottage and out onto the Pinglestone road.

Turn right here and follow the road to the end where there is a fork in the road.

Take the left fork and walk just past St.Mary's Church, Old Alresford. The pavement will end here so cross over and pick up the footpath to your left.

Follow this path until you see a little path in the grass on the left, cross over here and follow the narrow road that runs along the left side of the green past the swings. Keep left and continue past the farm to your left and houses to

JUnE WALKyour right; the road will end and you will see a track directly in front of you.

Follow this track until you come to the first track on your left, turn left and follow this to the very end where it meets a road.

At the road turn right, walk around the bend and you will see a farm gate on your left with a footpath sign hidden in the hedge, the gate is usually open. Walk into the field and up the hill. Once at the top you will have lovely views of Alresford and it’s a good place for a picnic; if not continue down and out of the field to the road at the bottom.

Cross the road and follow the footpath, (not the drive) down the field in front of you. Once at the base of the hill, turn left and follow the footpath as it drops down to the Eel House. Continue along this path and you will come to a turning on your right into Alrebury Park or continue past here and you will find yourself at the bottom of the Dean once more.

Spring is in the air and the sunshine seems to be with us. It is now that all the advantages of living near the coast come into their own as our minds start drifting towards days on the beach.

It is at times like these that we realise just how important it is to make sure that children and water equals fun and excitement and not fear and panic.

From the moment they are born babies have a natural affinity with water. Having been in the womb for nine months babies have an innate ability to move freely in an aquatic environment. Re-introducing them to the water during the early stages of life provides an atmosphere of relaxation where they feel reconnected to the womb. Sharing this feeling with mum and dad often develops a deeper level of bonding through the sharing of a whole new experience in a trusting setting.

Ensuring that your child feels comfortable and confident in the water from a young age is the first step towards learning to swim – an invaluable life skill. A well structured pre-

school swimming class will not only teach your child how to swim but will also impart a level of respect and discipline around water, equipping parent and baby with key life saving skills in a way that is fun and engaging. Ideally small class sizes and warm water (at least 32°C) are paramount to the right learning environment.

Life is constantly a voyage of discovery; for a baby in the water this can mean:• Developingmotorcontrol, agility, co-ordination and balance• Findingandstrengthening muscles, ligaments, heart and lungs• Socialstimulationwith other children and adults

For baby out of the water, swimming can improve appetite and sleep patterns as well as instilling in baby how to share toys and take turns. And just as important as baby, is mum and dad. Lots of skin to skin contact helps deepen bonds and often gives parents added confidence with their baby in the water in a social environment that allows them to meet new people whilst having fun.

It’s all about confidence and having fun!

hampshire mum

A fall does it not? You know when you get an idea and attached to it is the phrase ‘what can possibly go wrong?’

Well, it was an unseasonably warm Saturday, Star I and two chums had been bemoaning the fact that the local hills no longer presented any challenge to their long boarding prowess.

Lovely friend and I had already debated the fact that our offspring were, despite being banned from the roads, keen to emulate the antics of their U-Tube San Francisco long boarding heroes. It would only be a matter of time before they too were weaving in and out of the traffic down hills various, all a bit too much for our local market town we thought and anyway if we didn’t take the matter in hand there was bound to be an accident before long...

Awash with local knowledge as to the whereabouts of the best, virtually traffic free, hills and keen to gain maximum ‘Cool Mum’ points I suggested a trip to local chocolate box thatched village where there are three perfect slopes. And so it was that Star I, two chums and Star II packed all their gear into the Trusty Renault and I found space for water, flapjack and...plasters just in case.

We parked on a tree lined hill, ‘Blimey Mum we’re not boarding down here, it’s suicidal!!’ As they donned helmets and pads I instructed them that the second more gentle incline was about a quarter of a mile away up the hill and at the end of a tarmac track, so away the scooted. Meanwhile Star I, keen to be in on the act, had so much protective gear on he resembled an animated member of the Terracotta Army. With skate board under arm Star II manfully followed on until the lay of the land was flat enough for the virgin run.

“I’m just going to sit on it Mum, why does it keep going into the stingers?

Unbeknown to us Star I had been ‘repairing’ said skateboard to the point where one wheel was jammed on a permanent course...to the left. We tried all sorts of techniques, leaning to the right, tilting the board slightly, all to no avail, into the stinging nettles we went repeatedly. Meanwhile Star I and two chums had returned, “That was rubbish Mum, thought you said there were good hills here”. The word ‘ungrateful’ sprang to mind but not before Chum One saved the day by saying, “Yeah but this one looks more like it!!”

The words “Oh be careful...” hung in the air as he sped off down the hill to our right. Now I have to say that this hill was a little steeper than I had imagined, Chum One rapidly picked up an alarming amount of speed that made the board wobble and it was only due to the lane flattening out at the bottom and then rising sharply that Chum One, now whooping with delight, was able to stop. Star I announced, “Well I’m not doing that”. Star II, although significantly younger, adopted a macho pose and said “Yeah me neither”.

PRIDE COmES BEFORE...However Chum Two was not prepared to be outdone and amid cries of “No I don’t think you should!”, set off down the hill. The combination of gradient, and lightness of frame meant Chum Two quickly picked up speed, reaching maximum velocity a little way from the bottom where there was some gravel to be negotiated; apparently…the board became uncontrollable. Star I said solemnly, “That’s because they’re the wrong wheels.”

What followed was a fall of spectacular proportions. Chum Two rolled and tumbled with great momentum; had this been gymnastics it would have been 10s all

round. Unfortunately there was no soft landing.

I felt sure we were looking at compound fractures at the very least as I sprinted off down the hill but mercifully no, our brave little friend, it appeared, had all the attributes of a rubber ball both physically and mentally. Having checked the movement in all extremities it was clear there were no fractures just cuts and grazes and the howling had given way to bouts of laughter. As the others arrived I propped him up on his board and elevated the cut leg on a pile of boarding helmets and then sprinted back (in very inappropriate shoes) some quarter of a mile to get the Trusty Renault.

Screeching to a halt at the scene I was met with uncontrollable guffawing, “You should have seen yourself running Mum all we could see was your head bobbing up and down above the hedge, classic!!” Ummmm very amusing, little did they know I was now in panic mode. I mean why was there so little blood, not that I’m desperate for copious red stuff, but with a fall like that should there not have been more?

Then I had a Spielberg moment, you know when the sky rapidly recedes behind you, two horrors occurred to me. One:dear Chum Two may have internal bleeding behind the knee and two: the lovely parents of said Chum were due to go away on a very special celebratory weekend the following day ...but if hospital was needed?! AND this is all my fault!!!!

Burly Chum One lifted Chum Two into the front of the Trusty Renault and managed to crack his head on the side of the car as well; great let's add in a bit of concussion for good measure. Stars I and II threw all boards and clobber in the boot and reached for the flapjack whilst I administered damp tissues to wounds various and phoned lovely friend saying we were coming back, no need to worry but did she have an ice pack handy. Then off we screeched leaving ‘Cool Mum’ points spinning in the dust.

As it happened it was lucky escapes all round; robust Chum Two after major TLC from mum was absolutely fine, lovely friends got away for their weekend and I regained my title as ‘crap parent’.

Excellent.

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

ingredients / Method

Buy a loaf of good country bread, around 450g, short and fat. Buy some delicious mixed salad greens. Make or buy some grilled vegetables. You may buy cut frozen vegetables like mixed pepper, aubergine, courgettes etc, but dry them in a kitchen cloth before using them. Braised small fennels are exquisite. Make your own mayonnaise or buy a good shop brand (but it is best ready made). Mix the mayonnaise with different flavours; it is a good way to get rid of all the half full jars of sauces you may have collected over the last few months.

Put the grilled vegetables into a bowl, sprinkle with olive oil and a touch of ground coriander or cumin. Alternatively add a little pesto, salt/pepper and some chilli for heat, but be careful! Spread over a baking tray and cook at 180°C until very lightly grilled. Toast some slices of bread (1 per person for each tartine). Spread the toasts with a mixture of mayonnaise and English mustard, then put a few slices of saucisson (salami), cooked ham or cold roast beef on top. Place a small portion of grilled vegetables over the meat. Toss some salad with a good dressing and arrange on the plate and then add some thin slices of pear, a sprig of rosemary, some black olives or thin slices of blood orange.

t A R t I n E SWITH SUMMER COMING, LET’S ENJOY SOME FOOD TO PREPARE US FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON! FORGET ALL THE STRESS AND BE INFORMAL. MOST IMPORTANT: BE CREATIVE, DON’T BE SCARED, IT IS SUMMER AFTER ALL! - GERMAIN, CLOS DU MARQUIS

Why not try some other combinations:Spread some fig chutney on the toast, then add some thin slices of chicken breast, cover with camembert and toast in the oven, arrange on a plate with ribbons of courgettes.

Mayonnaise and curry based sauce with tuna flakes or sardines, grilled vegetables, tapenade and shredded mint.

Grilled slice of tuna (rare) with diced tomato quickly pan fried and then add a good dressing with slivers of parmesan on top.

The combinations are endless, remember what you love on holidays, and mix it, invent, play. Terrine and pates, fresh asparagus, artichokes, tapenades, few slices of cold roast beef and horseradish of course!

Buy only one large good quality French cheese, runny and so appetising! Most important, have everything on the table, add some flowers.
