Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), whose work is indissolubly linked with the Art Nouveau style, was one of the most fascinating artistic personalities of the turn of the 20th century. He was not only a painter and graphic artist, but also took an interest in sculpture, jewelry, interior decorating, and utilitarian art.
Born in Moravia in 1860, Alphonse Mucha moved to Paris in his 20s and went on to become one of the greatest exponents of the art nouveau style. In 1900 Alfons Mucha took part in the Paris World Exposition, evoking general attention with his wall decorations in Bosnia and Herzegovina's pavilion. In 1904 Alfons Mucha went to America, where he produced wall decorations, stages settings and portraits during a prolonged stay in New York. Alongside he taught drawing and composition at the Chicago Art Institute. After Mucha's return to his home country, shortly before World War I, he dedicated considerable time to lithographic work.

Although it enjoys great popularity today, at the time when he died, Mucha's style was considered outdated. His son, author Jiří Mucha, devoted much of his life to writing about him and bringing attention to his artwork. In his own country, the new authorities were not interested in Mucha. His Slav Epic was rolled and stored for twenty-five years before being shown in Moravsky Krumlov, and a Mucha museum opened in Prague, managed by his grandson John Mucha.

Madonna of the Lilies
oil on canvas 24.7 x 18.2 cm
1905
Madonna of the Lilies 1905 (details)In 1902 Mucha was asked to decorate a church in Jerusalem dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The project was later cancelled but not before Mucha had created this painting. According to Mucha's letter to his wife Maruška, he conceived the subject as 'Virgo purissima', and surrounded the heavenly vision of the Madonna with a mass of lilies, symbol of purity. The seated young girl in traditional costume carries a wreath of ivy leaves, symbol of remembrance.
