Collegium Vocale GentPhilippe Herreweghe: conductor

VICTORIA: Officium Defunctorum (Requiem) • 2 Motets • Domine, non sum dignus a4 • Salve Regina a6 • Vadam et circuibo civitatem a6

Tomás Luis de Victoria is definitely one of the most important composers in the musical history of Spain. His masterpiece is the “Officium Defunctorum,” published in Madrid in 1605. In this requiem—written for the funeral of Maria of Austria, daughter of

Emperor Charles V—the composer reached a mystical intensity of expression. Philippe Herreweghe just loves composers “who know how to build entire worlds with sounds, recognizable from the first notes, profound and full of richness.” For him, Tomás Luis de Victoria

is “one of the greatest musical minds ever.” So, it was an obvious choice for Herreweghe to make a recording of this heavenly “Officium Defunctorum.” And, of course, the crystal-clear sound of Collegium Vocale Gent is the perfect instrument to perform such music.

Selections of French Baroque music by d’Anglebert, Rameau, Moulinié & Corrette

The event known as “Les grandes eaux Musicales de Versailles 2012,” when all the fountains are working and accompanied by music, is presented by the Palace of Versailles in collaboration with Alpha. The music consists of a selection of absolute masterpieces of French Baroque music, from 17th- and 18th-century songs to great classics of the operatic repertoire, performed by some of the label’s leading artists.

FAURÉ: Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15 • Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45

Between 1875 and his death in 1924, Fauré produced around 10 compositions that are among the jewels of the French chamber repertoire, written at a time when opera and symphonic music were the predominant genres. International artist Eric Le Sage, who is a specialist in this repertoire, continues his exploration of Fauré’s complete chamber music with piano, accompanied by a fine team of first-rate artists. This second volume, expertly recorded by Jean-Marc Laisné in the wonderful setting of the MC2 Auditorium in Grenoble, shows extraordinary energy and elegance. The first volume was awarded the highest ratings by music magazine Classica in December 2011.

Café Zimmerman

Selections from Renaissance and Baroque keyboard works, plus secular cantatas of J.S. Bach with Leonhardt conducting

Alpha pays homage to Gustav Leonhardt in a lavish box set comprising the last five recordings made by this great pioneer. The set also includes tributes from musicians and collaborators such as Philippe Herreweghe, Elisabeth Joyé, and Gilles Cantagrel, and the booklet

presents a gallery of unpublished photographs.

These recordings take us on a fabulous journey into the world of keyboard works from late Renaissance to late Baroque, and explore a fascinating diversity of instruments (harpsichords, the hybrid claviorganum, and the extraordinary Dom Bedosorganof Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux). The last one, for which Leonhardt was artistic director and organist, is his final recording; it is devoted to secular cantatas by

J. S. Bach, performed by the ensemble Café Zimmermann.

SERVAIS: Morceau de Concert, Op. 14 (CD premiere) • Fantaisie Burlesque sur le Carnaval de Venise, Op. 9 (CD premiere) • La Romanesca (CD premiere) • Cello Conerto in B minor, Op. 5

Includes three CD premieres! The “Paganini of the cello” was how Berlioz and Rossini rated François Servais, one of the principal architects of the development of cello technique in the 19th century. Like Paganini, he wrote a substantial concert repertoire for his instrument, thus making up for the dearth of specific cello literature in the Romantic period; it is a great joy to discover some of his key concertante works here, performed by one of his most eminent interpreters. Ably supported by the orchestra of the Korean Broadcasting System under the baton of Patrick Davin, who has been much admired for his contribution to the recording of the complete Vieuxtemps violin concertos, here is a discovery that should excite all lovers of panache and diabolical virtuosity!

“There is no secret to her appeal: Fuzjko is not just playing the piano; she is using the music to make love, seeming to enter a romantic reverie to find and unfold the music’s beauties and intentions.” — Gramophone

This box set, which includes the albums Echoes of Eternity, La Campanella, Nocturnes of Melancholy, Live At Carnegie Hall, Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1, and Fuzjko’s self-titled album, contains works by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Scarlatti, Brahms, and Schumann. Gregorio Allegri deserves better than for his reputation to rest on just one piece; alongside his iconic Miserere, which never fails to cast its spell on listeners, the Choir of King’s College London presents premiere recordings of two of his five surviving Masses, richly wrought

with consummate skill in the prima prattica of Palestrina. Combining David Trendell’s scholarly integrity with great musical intensity, these glowing performances shed new light on a much-loved composer.

TELEMANN: Fantasies Nos. 1–12, TWV 40

Georg Philipp Telemann published his “12 Fantasies” for solo violin in Hamburg in 1735. These pieces place him firmly in the tradition, established in the late 17th century, of such renowned violinists as Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, Francesco Geminiani, Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, and Johann Paul von Westhoff, culminating with J.S. Bach, who published his famous cycles of sonatas and partitas for solo violin around 1720. The focal point of such works was to produce rich contrapuntal harmonies on a solo melody instrument in music that went beyond pure practice pieces and captivated its listeners. Telemann succeeded in this by avoiding virtuosic acrobatics by the instrumentalist and instead allowing the catchy tunes and dance rhythms to prevail.

This recording features Ori Kam, brother of clarinetist Sharon Kam, playing a version for solo viola in which the pieces have been transposed down by a fifth but are otherwise unchanged. The tone of the viola, warm in the lower register and possessing brilliance in the high notes, lends the works a new dimension of expression in comparison to the original. Ori Kam, playing in the Jesus-Christus Church in Berlin, draws from his instrument a sound that transcends all constraint and lets the listener simply float away with the music.

BEETHOVEN: Trio, Op. 1, No. 2 • Allegretto, WoO 39 • Variations, Op. 44 • Trio, Op. 70, No. 1 “Ghost”

“The joyous ebullience of the Piano Trio in G, Op. 1 No. 2, with its expansive first movement, set the tone for the evening—the strings filled with warmth, the piano sound exquisite. The Largo con espressione glowed; the Scherzo lived up to its name, and the tempo seemed spot-on for the energetic Finale … Then it was on to the big-name work of the evening: the Ghost Trio. The initial furor of the opening theme was explosive, and there was a real sense of the music wanting to take flight … The terrific Presto was met with cheers suggesting an audience twice the size.” — BBC Music magazine

This dynamic group, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has been exploring the remarkable variety displayed in the Beethoven Trios in many of their concerts over the years. SOMM has recorded them live at the famous St. George’s Concert Hall, Bristol, before capacity audiences and these concerts have been a huge success. Volume 1 will launch the Trio’s 20th anniversary celebrations!

NIEDER: Der Bilderfresser [“The Devourer of Images”] (instrumental music from the opera)

When Stefan Winter first heard Fabio Nieder’s “The Devourer of Images,” he did not know the plot of this opera, which will be premiered in Salzburg in 2015. He was also not aware that the music is but one part of that opera. And Nieder was unknown to him, too. But he made the decision to release the music on Winter & Winter, because Fabio Nieder creates dream sequences that give wings to fantasy. The music, the story, and the sounds seem so thrilling—foreign and at the same time familiar—perhaps because Nieder’s music talks in such an emphatic, beautiful way about love, dreams, loss, death, and life.

The “Stube” is the parlor in a farmhouse, usually paneled in wood, where people go to rest, to celebrate, to mourn, and to make music. Alexandra Dienz, Christof Dienz, Barbara Romen, and Gunter Schneider guide us into a friendly and sophisticated version of this multi-purpose meeting place. The first CD comprises song-like pieces in various interpretations, while on the second CD the focus is skillfully shifted from structures to sounds. The musicians delve deep into the nature of their instruments, exploring their potential as sound-generating bodies, leading us from seemingly familiar models to free musical moods. Deep-reaching roots are carefully unearthed, grafted, and propagated with great intelligence and devotion, and the result is pure delight.

The ability to build new forms from miscellaneous components, using wit and virtuosity as mortar, is a remarkable skill—one that Jelena Popržan and Rina Kaçinari have honed to perfection. One is a Serbian, the other a Kosovo Albanian, and together they play Bach, traditional music from the Balkans and the Scottish highlands, pop songs, and their own compositions resounding with a multitude of different influences. In their music, they combine stories and interpretations from different places, eras, and angles. Equipped with a cello, a viola, and their voices, they build bridges across centuries and musical traditions, and they do it all with a light-footedness and natural ease that is simply amazing.

CAGE: Imaginary Landscapes Nos. 1–5 • Sixteen Dances

Landscape and dance, the two themes proposed by this CD—conceived as the prolongation of the homage to John Cage performed on October 22, 2009 in Parma—intersect with a natural circularity in the mysterious world of the great musician, who once declared graphically: “Until I die there will be sounds. And they will continue following my death.”

A. SCARLATTI: Sonatas in G & F • Mentre Clori la bella • Ardo è ver per te d’amore • Filli, tu sai ch’io t’amo • Clori mia, Clori bella • Augellin, vago e canoro

In the context of Alessandro Scarlatti’s immense musical production, the recorder repertory certainly plays an important role, the fruit of an interest spanning the entire career of the composer both in his instrumental works and in larger orchestral groups of serenades and musical dramas. This CD proposes cantatas with the soprano voice requiring one or two recorders, besides two sonatas for recorder and basso continuo. It is a homogeneous musical corpus, not by chance almost all contained in two manuscripts preserved in the extraordinary Santini collection, preserved in the Diözesanbibliothek Münster, with the exception of the cantata “Ardo è ver per te d’amore,” a manuscript copy of which is in the library of the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples.

DI BARI: … di un mirabile gioco sonoro • All Is Lost • Bird’s Fractal Voice

The highly refined work of Marco Di Bari reveals a cultured individual who is fully aware of the traditions to which he refers. Piano is a constant presence in the work of this composer. The tradition of the instrument is interpreted through the investigation of objects and technical formulas that are used to generate new sonorous ideas and deep emotions. The relation between past and future, between usual and unusual techniques, is approached from a contemporary point of view, thus creating a successful and paradigmatic synthesis.

Vienna-born Hans Gál (1890–1987) settled in Edinburgh after fleeing from the Nazis in 1938, and became a much-loved figure in his adoptive town. This is the fourth CD in the first complete recording of the 72 cantatas from Telemann’s collection Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, published in Hamburg in 1726—the first complete set of cantatas for the liturgical year to appear in print. The cantatas are designated for voice, an obbligato instrument, and basso continuo, and generally take the form of two da capo arias with an intervening recitative. BACEVICIUS: The Complete Mots (6)

Lithuanian pianist and composer Vytautas Bacevicius (1905–70) is one of the undiscovered pioneers of 20th-century music. His series of seven Mots (‘Words’) for keyboard—five for solo piano, one for organ, and one for two pianos—were written between 1933 and 1966, and show the evolution of his musical language from the post-Scriabin style of the early works, via the influence of Prokofiev and Stravinsky, to a highly individual modernism akin to that of two fellow radicals, Varèse and Wolpe.

McCabe—born in Liverpool in 1939 and a composer-pianist in the tradition of Beethoven and Rachmaninov—has always championed the music of his contemporaries alongside his own and that of the masters of the past, and this farewell recital included two works by friends and colleagues as well as his own grandiose “Tenebrae.”

“The reigning recorder virtuoso in the world today.” — Washington Post

Piers Adams is widely regarded as one of the greatest recorder players of our time. He has worked tirelessly to develop the recorder’s reputation as a serious solo instrument, in particular through his research into forgotten corners of the instrument’s repertoire and his numerous arrangements and transcriptions from a wide range of genres. In 1997 Piers founded his now world-renowned baroque quartet Red Priest, with whom he has toured the globe several times, performing over 1,000 concerts on four continents in some of the most prestigious music festivals. The group has appeared frequently on TV and radio—including hour-long televised features on LWT’s The South Bank Show (UK)—and recorded several acclaimed discs for Red Priest Recordings.

A. SCARLATTI: Venere, Amore e Ragione • Sinfonia from Concerto Grosso No. 10

Alessandro Scarlatti was undoubtedly the greatest composer of vocal music in Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, despite his grandeur being recognized by historians, it’s only recently that his music can be heard and appreciated in concerts. The “serenata” could be considered the form that lies between opera and cantata, a kind of mini-opera with the usual alternation between arias and recitatives but without the effects of staging. A characteristic of the beautiful and rare serenata recorded here is the presence of a general dancing nature of many of the arias along with real instrumental dances that, towards the end, intertwine with the arias.

Traditional Norwegian folk music, interspersed with short works by Carl Friedrich Abel, Giardini, Mattheson, Robinson, Fischer, Brade & Lupo

Carl Friedrich Abel goes to Norway, where the famous bass viol virtuoso meets a player of the Hardanger fiddle (a violin fitted with sympathetic strings typical of the Hardanger region). This meeting occurs during a wedding and every circumstance is an opportunity for nice music: walking to church, the religious ceremony, the ball and its aristocratic and popular dances, the telling of anecdotes and confidences around the fire, and a good pint of beer, ending up in an early-morning frenzy with a last dance that marks the end of the festivities.

Trio compositions by great admirers of Brahms are the subject and contents of this new CD by successful young Austrian violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger and his chamber music partners Attilia Kiyoko Cernitori (cello) and Evgueni Sinaiski (piano). Like a leitmotif, both stylistic elements and the spirit of the great master of German Romanticism link the works of this compilation, whose dates of publication mark a period of 70 years, from 1879 to 1949, and whose composers fell prey to censorship and suppression by the Nazi regime due to their Jewish origins.

MOZART: Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622 (arr. clarinet & string quartet) • POULENC: Clarinet Sonata • GARSON: Jazz Variations on a Theme of Paganini • Ballad • Jazz Etude

With this recording, versatile Austrian clarinetist Wilfried Gottwald traces a wide arc from W.A. Mozart up to jazz. The Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622 is presented for the first time in an arrangement for clarinet and string quartet. Besides this classic of the clarinet repertoire, you can also hear the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, and a late work by Francis Poulenc. In classical jazz trio instrumentation, i.e. together with piano and double bass, the long-standing Vienna Symphony Orchestra member impressively shows—with Mike Garson’s Jazz Variations on a Theme of Paganini—that this genre is often closer to classical music than imagined, and that he feels equally at home in both.

After the Goldberg Variations and the English Suites, the award-winning accordionist presents Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826 and Partita No. 4 in D, BWV 828 from the compendium of piano music by the Baroque maestro casually termed “Clavierübung” in a technically perfect and musically convincing manner.

The largest composition is a grandly conceived Introduction & Passacaglia based on themes of Norwegian composer Fartein Valen. Other works include an organ suite, some organ chorales, and even wedding music, from a composer whose compositional and technical repertoire is very extensive.

KARLSEN: St. Luke Passion

Kjell Mørk Karlsen’s St. Luke Passion was composed in 2006. The main textual source is the Passion of Christ according to St. Luke, Chapters 22–23. In Mørk Karlsen’s work, the text is recited with accompanying organ sequences, while the dramatic narrative is reinforced by additional concertizing organ parts. Nine greater Latin choral hymns function as commentaries to the Gospel text, the words having been taken from early liturgical texts for Good Friday, still in use in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. While the large-scale, chiefly eight-part choral compositions have their musical roots both in Russian Orthodox church music and in Gregorian chant, the melodic character and particular sound of our own times are also clearly present in Mørk Karlsen’s work. This is how the composer himself describes the structure and design of the St. Luke Passion, a work that startles, moves, and engages the listener.

He composed neither symphonies nor operas—his whole creative life was dedicated to piano works. Chopin considered this instrument ideal for expressing feelings and ideas; his nocturnes, waltzes, ballads, mazurkas, polonaises, etudes, and scherzos are the recognized masterpieces of piano art, played here by a true master.

J.S. BACH: French Suites Nos. 1–3, BWV 812–814 • Italian Concerto, BWV 971 • Aria Variata in A minor, BWV 989 “In the Italian Style”

Until recently, Lorenzo Ghielmi has made solo recordings with Passacaille mainly as an organist. However, as a performer he is continuing the tradition of the 18th century, where musicians were masters on all keyboard instruments that were available. This new recording presents him as a harpsichord player. Two instruments were used for this recording: for the French Suites a harpsichord by Keith Hill inspired by an anonymous 18th century German harpsichord, and for the pages reflecting the Italian influence, a harpsichord by Andrea Restelli inspired by the Christian Vater harpsichord held in the Nuremberg Museum.

ZELENKA: Lamentationes I & II • J.S. BACH: Cantata “Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgendein Schmerz sei” BWV 46 • “Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben!” BWV 102

The two Bach cantatas presented here were written three years apart (1723 and 1726) for the same Sunday of the liturgical year, the tenth Sunday after Trinity. The Gospel for the day reports Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, and announcing its destruction. Marcel Ponseele thought it was very interesting to juxtapose these cantatas against two lamentations composed by Zelenka in 1722. In a span of four years, geographically closely connected, we have three musical settings of the same subjects. One lamentation is for baritone solo and the other for alto voice, performed on this recording by the French countertenor Damien Guillon.
