And even better, Rotarians and guests seeing each other, often for the first time, live and in color. Yes. Three dimensional Rotarians giving hugs and more. No Social Distancing. No Masking up. No. This was a party to send off President Dan Rasmus and welcome in President Ellen Harrington.

And the Debunking Committee outdid themselves once again.

AT THE BELL There was no Bell but there was David Schreibman calling the partiers together. He turned it over to Gene Nelson for the Thought for the Day. Gene went deep into The Good Book – somewhere between Isaiah and Lamentations and came up with a text from Jeremiah. In case you haven’t read that one lately – it was something about the world in turmoil and the smart move being the buying of Real Estate.

Did I say there had been a party just prior?

David Schreibman quickly got things back on track by introducing a few visitors and VIPs in the crowd. Doug Johnson our District Governor was here. Ron and Linda Puccinelli came for the fun all the way from Idaho. And First Lady Fran Rasmus took a bow as well.

David Schreibman took off his emcee hat and put on his Membership Committee Chair hat to introduce two new members to our Club. Welcome to Karimeh Shehadeh and Anthony Grados. John and Patty Blount will be their sponsors and mentors. Hence the first standing ovation of the night.

Outgoing President Dan said goodbye and thank you to his board whom he dubbed the Board without Fear. Many thanks to Cindy Carter, Steve Prandini, Bob Boyd, John Blount, Robin Maybury, Scott Briggs and Ken Jacobs. And Ellen Harrington was on the board too.

Dan then announced his picks for Rotarians of the Year. No surprise that Cindy Carter was so honored. She worked tirelessly to get things going and get things done.

John Blount was also named. Dan said that John was inspirational in snapping him out of the doldrums of the pandemic and into experimentation and adventure. Thanks John. Ellen Harrington introduced her incoming Board. Sue Engle, Edwin Wilson, Amee Sas, Gail Gijzen, Dorothy Rodella, Scott Briggs, Ken Jacobs and Hal Kwalwasser will take the helm after the meeting tonight. Dan Rasmus will be retired.

But wait – the question that has been nagging the Club since Dan Rasmus was named as President Elect came rushing to the fore. “Who will play the part of Dan at the debunking?” The Debunking Committee came up with a brilliant solution to this conundrum – Dan will play Dan playing other Presidents and Rotarians. Yes, the rapt audience was treated to a series of filmed vignettes from debunkings past wherein Dan played Edwin Wilson, Ken Jacobs, Frank Mayhew, Paul Harris, Jerry Warren and others. Dan playing Dan playing others was such a hit that Dan was awarded an Academy Award.

Other filmed tributes included Fran Rasmus offering many behind the scenes stories of the REAL DAN RASMUS that few of us know including his penchant for tuna sandwiches at 11:59 am each afternoon. ( No Fran, Dan wasn’t mad about this like you feared)

Other filmed gems included the Dan Rasmus Beer Mug and the ever popular Rotary Hairclub for Men featuring Nao Noguchi ( who is also a member)

JEOPARDY

This was all topped off by a rollicking version of Rotary Jeopardy with all of the categories featuring Dan Rasmus.

Contestants included Gene Nelson, Aleia Coate, and Gail Gijzen. Taking the place of Alex Trebek was Keller McDonald (aka Alex Trainwreck).

The night rolled on with answers not taking the form of questions, way too many beer references, and Keller doing a remarkably bad job of keeping score. In the end, no one won but they all had a beer.

The grand finale was an excellent retrospective on the Rotary year which was badly marred by an unwanted and unneeded pandemic messing everything up. But Dan Rasmus wouldn’t let that stop him. Through experimentation and sheer adventurism – Dan turned what could have been a disastrous year into a triumph.

THE FINAL BELL Thank You Dan – That last standing ovation was for you.
