ALL THE LATEST ON THE EUROPEAN SCENE BROUGHT TO YOU BY HARAS DES TROTTEURS SWEDEN Such was On Track Piraten’s dominance this winter that only five rivals lined up against him at Romme and the gold division race was not part of the V75 card. And it turned out to be as much of a mismatch as his prohibitive 1/10 odds on price indicated with driver Johnny Takter content to sit off the pace early, before tak- ing the leadwith a lap and a half to go. On Track Piraten made his move down the back straight the last time, with Usain Henna gamely trying to keep pace which the Super Light entire did un- til the bend, from where On Track Piraten set sail for the line unaccompanied to win easily. Usain Henna was sec- ond five lengths back with an even greater distance to Fly The World (Juliano Star), the third horse home. FRANCK NIVARD’S Dober- man tore up the reputa- tions of several leading 4YOs at Vincennes on the weekend. The Prix de Tonnac-Ville- neuve is the first major test for the 4YO French crop, and saw the Allaire stable, which dominated this crop’s 3YO racing season, provide the favourite in Criterium des 3 Ans runner-up Django Riff, who was backed in at better than even money ahead of his stablemate Dollar Mack- er while Criterium des 3 Ans winner Diego du Geulier was narrowly the third favourite. Dollar Macker was the first to break ranks and led the field early, while Django Riff was content to sit three wide and moved up to sit parked outside the wheel of his sta- blemate as they went up the hill. Diego du Guelier, as he did in the Criterium moved up to break up the Allaire team, taking over before they got to the rise, and led them on the downhill as Django Riff quickly moving to a challeng- ing position outside, as they turned for home. But the challenge never came from the son of Ready Cash, with Diego du Guelier instead having to deal with a charge by Louis Baud- ron and Draft Life and then Franck Nivard on Doberman, who produced a scintillating burst to claim his first group race. The son of Prodigious got the decision by a narrow margin from Diego du Gueli- er and Draft Life. Doberman has now won seven races, and been placed in a Group I for just over €200,000 in earnings. FRENCH FACT For the third consecutive year, Sebastien Guarato was named France’s top trainer. An exceptional year was capped by his first vic- tory in the Prix d’Amérique with Bold Eagle. Top juvenile trainer Philippe Allaire was second while France’s top driver Jean-Michel Bazire showed the other side to his horsemanship by finishing third. Last season Guarato’s sta- ble won a staggering €7M, including 25 group races (six Group ones). Nine of them were won by Bold Eagle while Ustinof du Vivier, Astor du Quenne and Valko Jenilat, Bolero Love and Baltic Charm also distin- guished themselves as did young stars Carat Williams, Classic Way, Dreamer Delo and Eridan. The Prix de Lille was the lat- est to draw Europe’s top trot- ters to the Temple du Trot, with a purse of €88,000 at stake. Daniel Reden’s Call Me Keeper was a group one win- ner in Sweden last year, but is no stranger to French rac- ing, indeed he lined up in the last two of the B races and has won six rich European races on the French circuit in the past 12 months. The Pine Chip stallion was the even money favourite in the 17-strong field and started on the outside of the mobile arm and stayed three wide down the long Vincennes straight before taking over from pacesetter Arazi Boko as they turned up the hill. Driver Pierre Vercruysse then had the field under complete control, keeping the tempo up and gradual- ly upping it as they crossed the rise and never looking in any danger as he coasted to a three length win over Arazi Boko, who stayed on strongly for second. Beau Gamin also stayed on for third for Sebas- tien Guarato. The Swedish dominance of the European eligible races continued later in the day with Carabinieri driven by Johan Untersteiner for his fa- ther Peter winning the Prix de Vic Sur Cere. Indeed Swedish horses formed a trifecta in the race which at €66,000 or more than 630,000 SEK, is more than a Group II level in his homeland. Untersteiner settled mid- field early, jockeying for an outside sit as Be Bop Hau- for eventually settled at the head of the field. Unterstein- er made his move on Cara- binieri at the top of the rise and was best placed outside the leader as they turned for home, taking the lead when Be Bop Haufor broke under pressure. Fellow Swede Scel- lino Luis from Daniel Reden’s barn was second from lo- cally-trained Swede King Sir Kir (Make It Happen) from Philippe Billard’s barn. GERARD FORNI The Prix Leon Tacquet, a Group II for 5YOs went to the French-bred but Swedish foaled favourite Canadien D’Am. The son of Ready Cash is trained in France by Franck Leblanc was ridden by Mat- thieu Abrivard, who kept wide of the peleton from the outset, advancing to the lead as they turned into the Join- ville Plain. From there Canadien d’Am settled in front as they climbed the hill and opened up a two length margin as they turned for home. Antoine Lherete attempt- ed to rally from the trail on Candela (First de Retz) but Canadien d’Am went to the line strongly to win by three lengths. Candela was sec- ond with Celina Polka (Kool du Caux) a distant third. The Prix du Calvados is a rich international Group II monte worth 15,000 and sometimes called the Cor- nulier of geldings with these being barred from racing in the €700,000 Prix du Cornu- lier in a fortnight’s time. As such it is one of the high- lights of the Winter Meeting and once again drew a great field which included top Swedish stayer and former Harpers Hanovers winner Mellby Viking, who fronted up under saddle for the very first time with a shot at the Prix du Cornulier in mind. But two of the favourites for that race were also the punt- ers’ choices here, in French monte group one winners Belissima France and Bilibili. Ridden respectively by the Abrivard cousins, Mathieu and Alexandre, Belissima France and Bilibili settled midfield alongside Mellby Vi- king as Veloce du Banney set the early tempo. Going up the hill Mellby Vi- king made a move forward to sit outside Veloce du Banney, tracked all the way by Bilibili and Belissima France. But as they crossed the rise Mellby Viking dropped away as Bilibili took control and set off for the line a long way from home. Bilibili still had a three length lead as they turned for home but Belissi- ma France stayed on strongly and the pair hit the line to- gether.
