PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As you would know the NSW Premier has announced that all students will return to school, full time from Monday 25th May. Staff are excited to have everyone back 5 days a week. Although we are returning 5 days a week not everything will return to normal just yet. Please take the time to read through this information to know what is happening. I have included an A-Z summary to help with easy reference. We will be following the policy of the NSW Department of Education and the AHPPC advice for schools. Key Points:

• Students don’t need to socially distance. Students will be in their normal class with their usual teacher.

• Adults need to socially distance. Parents/carers are asked not to come on to the school site. • Please practice social distancing outside the school gate. • Students are expected to attend school each day. • The only learning program will be face to face at school. • We are trying to reduce items (such as readers) going home and coming back to school.

Attendance All students should be at school unless:

• They have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition

• They are currently unwell. Please note, students who live with a family member in one of the categories identified as being at increased risk by the AHPPC, should attend school unless a medical practitioner advises otherwise in writing. If your child is unwell, do not send them to school. If they are unwell at school you or your nominated emergency contact will need to collect them immediately. Please make sure your contact details are up to date. If a student is absent without a medical reason for more than three days, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up by the school. What Students Will Need Back At School

• A refillable water bottle with their name on it (bubblers will not be available). • Textbooks – please bring back your textbooks. • Their correct school uniform – including a school jumper and school hat. (Please note black

tights, on their own, are not part of the uniform). Sport uniform to be worn on sport days. • Their own pencil case, pencils and pens. • Kindergarten – please bring back your mini whiteboard.

Drop Off/ Pick Up Routines Please look out for additional information about drop off and pick-up. Communication Class Dojo will continue to be the main communication channel between the class teacher and families. Student Diaries will not be sent back and forth. School to family communication will continue to be via our school APP and Facebook. Our newsletter will continue to be published weekly.

Hygiene Routines • Keep your child at home if they are unwell – cough, sore throat, fever, breathing difficulties,

flu-like symptoms or a heavy cold. If your child displays symptoms at school you or your emergency contacts will be contacted to pick up your child.

• If you are unwell do not come to school. • Students will wash their hands regularly and well. Soap is available in classrooms and in

toilets. • Cover your cough or sneeze in your elbow or a tissue. • Additional cleaning is in place throughout the school day.

Learning Program On Monday 25th May the learning program will switch from Learning At Home to learning at school face to face. This will be the only learning program available. Learning At Home support will cease. Week 5 learning packs have already been sent home with students on their allocated day this week or will be sent home. This will be the last Learning At Home pack. Most learning will resume. Sport and PE activities will be modified. Some other activities will be modified also. Reporting and Parent/Teacher Interviews Reporting and parent/teacher interviews will be different this semester. In fact we are going to flip them. The discussion with parents will occur first and then the report will follow that conversation. Parent/teacher interviews will take the form of a phone conversation. Your child’s teacher will be in contact over the next couple of weeks to discuss how students went during the Learning At Home period and how they are going back at school. Teachers will prepare a modified report for Semester One. The report will provide information about each student based on information gathered at school and whilst students were Learning At Home. The report will be issued by the end of the term. Parents will be able to book a time to receive the phone call in a similar way they would normally book an interview. More details about booking phone calls will follow. What Won’t Be Happening

• Birthday Cakes – please don’t send birthday cakes to share. The canteen will have icy sticks that you can order through Flexischools (from next Tuesday). Another alternative is a fancy pencil or eraser to share with classmates (as these can be wiped and don’t go in the mouth)

• Home Reading Books – families will continue to have access to the eReaders. Home reading books won’t be issued for the time being

• Diaries – communication will still be via Class Dojo. If you don’t have Class Dojo you can still contact teachers via phone.

• Excursions • Volunteer programs • Interschool sport and sport carnivals • NDIS providers • Band and other activities • Scripture – lessons continue to be available on line. • Assemblies •

Terrigal School Care Terrigal School Care is open. Please contact the centre to ensure you are booked in.

Transport – Buses Buses will continue to run. Dedicated school buses will operate as normal with enhanced cleaning. Public bus routes will continue to operate. Students will have priority on public buses and no student will be left behind. If your child catches a public bus I urge you to discuss with your child that some adults on the bus may be concerned about social distancing. Students should not sit next to an adult passenger, if possible. They should be aware of and stay clear of adult passengers. Canteen

The canteen will operate 5 days a week. Orders only – no counter service. Orders only via Flexischools. There will be a limited menu – see Flexischools for details. Students will be able to order recess and lunch. Drinks will be sent with orders to classrooms, students will not need to pick up their drinks separately.

Uniform Shop The uniform shop is operating in an online capacity. Orders can be made via Flexischools and picked up from the school office. In other news…….. Thank You Lunch Thank you to our families for the wonderful lunch staff enjoyed this week. Thank you to Helen Green and her team for organising the lunch. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make the lunch possible. Staff were very appreciative and the wonderful food from Freestate Café went down a treat.

National Sorry Day Next Tuesday 26th May marks National Sorry Day. This day is significant for not only Australia’s first peoples but all Australians as a day to continue the healing journey. It recognises the grief and suffering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, highlighted in the ‘Bringing them Home’ Report. As a school community we are committed to improving the lives of all Australians. We are developing students who are culturally aware

and understand there are multiple viewpoints in history. Students who are active and informed citizens committed to ensure mistakes of the past are not repeated. We acknowledge and pay our respects to local elders past and present and extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. National Volunteer Week This week is National Volunteer Week and whilst we currently can’t have our volunteers on site I still want to recognise the contribution of our volunteers. Thankyou to our P & C volunteers for your tireless work to support our school. To our classroom helpers, SAKG program volunteers, Scripture volunteer teachers, canteen volunteers and all of our other helpers thank you for everything you have done. We look forward to having all of our volunteers back with us in the near future. Congratulations Mr Lenson Congratulations to Mr Lenson on his success in gaining a permanent job at Empire Bay Public School. Fortunately, Mr Lenson will be with us for the rest of 2020 and start in his new school next year. Mr Lenson has been a highly valued member of our staff for the past 6 years and he will be a big loss. No. Remaining students will not be undertaking new work. They will engage in activities such as silent reading, completing unfinished work or practice activities.

No. Please make an appointment to speak to the teacher. The teachers need to be concentrating on linking students to parents.
