money for their trip to Newark Valley, NY this Summer 2017. The

poinsettias are beautiful, florist quality red poinsettias, 14”-19” tall

flowers, come in a 6 inch pot and sell for $12.00. Wreaths are

Need Prayer? Prayer needs are addressed in two ways at St. Louis. In the vestibule of church is a

Prayer Request Notebook where anyone, at any time, can write prayer concerns.

The Members of the Prayer and Praise Ministry commit to praying daily for these

intentions. For more urgent prayer needs (illness, surgery, etc.) there is a Prayer

Chain that will get dozens of people praying immediately.

To begin the Prayer Chain, please call one of the following: Janice Werner, 932-9200 ; Erma Hartman, 934-3678; or Viola Fullenkamp, 934-3316

Ministry of Prayer and Praise Intentions for November That we be particularly aware of the poor souls in purgatory this month and seek

to aid them by our prayers and sacrifices so that they may soon enter heaven

and rest forever in the peace of the risen Christ.

That the faithful may develop a sincere devotion to the saints, learn about their

lives and strive to imitate their virtues and example.

That the virtue, integrity, and courage of the saints will take hold of the minds

and hearts of our newly elected officials, and all those who govern, so that they

may be attentive to God’s law and never seek to oppose it.

For all veterans, that the Lord may bless and reward those whose sacrifice has

preserved our nation in freedom.

For all those who have died, that the Lord will bring them to the joy of

eternal life.

For all of us, and for our fellow Americans, that Thanksgiving Day will be a time

for renewed gratitude to our Creator for His continual favors.

All Souls Day-Plenary Indulgence All Souls Day, November 2nd, commemorates those who have

died whose souls are now in Purgatory being cleansed of their

venial sins and the temporal punishment for the mortal sins

that they had confessed, but need atoning for, before enter-

ing fully into Heaven. The faithful on earth can help them

by prayers, almsgiving, and especially by Holy Mass.

A Plenary Indulgence can be gained by visiting a cemetery any day, or each day,

between November 1st and November 8th, and devoutly praying for the departed.

This indulgence is only applicable to the souls in Purgatory. A Plenary Indulgence

must always be accompanied by the three prerequisites: 1) Sacramental Confes-

sion; 2) Holy Communion; and 3) Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. All of

these three prerequisites are to be performed within twenty days before or after the

indulgenced act, if not at the same time. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to

the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One

sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate

Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required

for each plenary indulgence.

Did You Know "Halloween" is a contraction of "All Hallows Eve," and it

designates the Vigil of All Hallows Day, more com-

monly known today as All Saints Day. ("Hallow," as a

noun, is an old English word for saint. As a verb, it

means to make something holy or to honor it as

holy.) Halloween was first celebrated in the 8th century, approximately 400 years

after the Celts had abandoned druidism for Christianity. The pumpkin, which is

native to North America, was not imported to the British Isles until over 600 years

later. Both the name and the custom of the jack-o'-lantern date from the 17th cen-

tury, and it was commonly associated with Catholic beliefs and practices: for Catho-

lic children, it was customary to carry jack-o'-lanterns door-to-door to represent the

souls of the dead while begging for soul cakes on Hallowmas, the triduum of All

Saints Vigil (Oct. 31), All Saints Day( Nov. 1), and All Souls Day (Nov. 2).
