All Saints Catholic College has had a busy and exciting start to the school year. I congratulate the students for their positive attitude, enthusiasm and the way they have welcomed new students and staff to our All Saints Community.

Our College strives to develop positive relationships between students and staff based on respect for all, and this expectation is made clear by each staff-member in their dealings with students both within and beyond the classroom. We hold our students in the highest esteem, and in turn explicitly require that they approach staff and one another in the same manner. Student wellbeing is at the centre of all that we do and ASCC has a highly dedicated and widely experienced wellbeing team:

Mr Adam Rafferty – Leader of Pastoral & Administration•Ms Jenny Keys – Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing•Ms Madeline Ball – Year 7 Assistant•Mrs Helene Baillie - Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing•Mr Michael Dixon – Year 8 Assistant•Mr Shane Duff - Year 9 Leader of Wellbeing•Ms Vanessa Riga – Year 9 Assistant•Ms Sue Foxcroft - Year 10 Leader of Wellbeing•Mr Mat Shackleton – Year 10 Assistant•Ms Breanna Sada – School Counsellor•Mr Andrew Psaila - School Counsellor•

Pastoral lessons play an important role in students’ wellbeing. These lessons are programmed into the College timetable and take place three to four times per term. Topics such as Bullying, Cyber-Awareness, Relationships, Self-Image, Resilience, Positive Mental Health and many more are examined via a range of activities sequenced across the four years of the students’ time at the College. The lessons are student focused and facilitated by the class Pastoral Care teacher, whom they also see each morning as rolls are taken before classes begin.

Also, as part of our Pastoral program, Leaders of Wellbeing organise a number of invitational guest speakers and performances to augment the Pastoral Care Lessons and further engage their year group in this vital learning. Annual “Wellbeing Days” are also held for each year group.

High Expectations

ASCC places high expectations on its students. We empower students to achieve their personal best in all areas. They will be challenged within a dynamic learning environment to become independent learners willing to take risks and become lifelong learners.

We also expect that students act respectfully. We expect students to respect themselves, to respect others and to respect All Saints.

We expect that all students follow our College rules and ask that parents and carers work together, in partnership, with the school to ensure that each student is achieving their full potential and abiding by our College rules.

Uniform and Grooming

At All Saints Catholic College we take pride in our appearance and wish to present a tailored and professional image to the community.

A reminder that all uniform and grooming requirements are listed on pages 5 and 6 of the College diary.

Spotlight on the Creative & Performing ArtsIt is with great excitement that I write my first article for the All Saints newsletter. I had heard so much about the college, but now I am here I can see what all the fuss was about.

Welcome to All Saints Catholic College Creative and Performing Arts page. This is a blank canvas where we will paint a picture of the fabulous Creative and Performing arts initiatives to continue the great work that has been done in the College up to this time.

Music students have been quite busy preparing for two significant liturgies that will commence the liturgical year at All Saints. The first of these is Ash Wednesday quickly followed by the Opening Mass at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. There have been many students with an abundance of gifts and talents and we hope to share these with the All Saints Community in the coming year.

We are hoping to put together a combined Vocal Ensemble and try different repertoire, that is types of songs. Rehearsals for this initiative will commence in the music rooms every Tuesday A at lunchtimes and we invite both boys and girls and also hope to include instrumentalists. Very soon we will start a competition to name the Vocal Ensemble so watch this space.

Visual Arts students have moved to a temporary home whilst work is being commenced on the new Visual Arts facilities which will be an exciting addition to the college.Drama students have settled in quite well and have been having fun creating characters both real and imagined.

2016 promises to be an exciting year for Creative and Performing Arts at the College and I look forward to continuing the partnership with

existing parents and invite new parents to support the activities of this college.

Dropping off and picking up students at school the safe way

Children are vulnerable around and on the road. Their physical  size  and  developmental  limitations  place them at risk in the traffic environment. Drivers are less likely to be able to see a small child and it is harder for children  to  see  oncoming  traffic.  Their  lack  of  road experience means  it  is  difficult  for  a  child  to  judge dangerous  situations.  Children’s  safety  to  and  from school is an important road safety issue.

‘No  Parking’  zones  allow  drivers  to  stop  for  a maximum  of  two  minutes  to  drop  off  and  pick  up passengers. Drivers must  stay within  three metres of their vehicle at all times.  ‘No Parking’ zones provide a pick‐up  and  set  down  area  that  gives  parents  and carers  a  safe  environment  to  drop‐off  and  pick‐up their children from school by car.

Many school road environments in the Liverpool Local Government Area have ‘No Parking’ zones which work well when parents use them properly. Problems arise however, when drivers misuse  the  zones by  stopping and waiting  in  their vehicles  for  lengthy periods. The penalty for disobeying a  ‘No Parking’ sign  is $177 and 2 demerit points (effective 1 July 2015).

Parents must ensure their children know how they will be  collected  from  school.  They  need  to  know when and where parents will be after school and where they should wait.  Children must  know  not  to  try  and  get into  a  vehicle  while  it  is  still  in  traffic,  even  if  it  is stopped.

 Tips For Parents:

Make  sure  that  the  hand  brake  is  applied when  the  vehicle  is  stationary  in  the  ‘No Parking’ zone.

Make sure children use the footpath‐side door when getting in and out of a car.

Never  double  park,  park  across  a  pedestrian crossing  or  park  in  a  ‘No  Stopping’  or  ‘Bus Zone’.

Never undertake a U‐turn in close proximity to a school.

Never call to your child across the road.

Children up to 10 years old should be actively supervised  around  traffic  and  should hold  an adult's hand when crossing the road.

ministryAll Saints Catholic College has had quite a successful beginning and the year that follows promises to be memorable.

Easter is early this year as I am sure many people have already realised. It is marked by Ash Wednesday, a day when Catholics receive ashes on their foreheads as a sign that we are sinners and are mere mortals - we will eventually die unless we constantly reflect upon our lives and commit to becoming more Christ-like, so that we too may share in his eternal life; the eternal life that he opened up for us, through his victory over death on Easter Sunday when he rose from the dead.

We are people who are Inspired by Christ. As we enter the liturgical season of Lent, we look to Jesus for guidance. How did Jesus prepare to serve God? He prayed, he fasted and he gave of himself, and the Catholic tradition would have us do the same things. What can you do this Lent to participate in these activities?

We have a Lenten Prayer Group who meet in the Prayer Room every lunchtime during Lent. You can attend once or everyday as you see fit. You can make your own sacrifice and join us as we fast from meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday in Lent. Finally, All Saints traditionally fundraises for Caritas’ Project Compas-sion. Year 10 are responsible for running this initiative in Term 1. …..

Fr Remy leaves us shortly and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Father Remy for all he has done for our College community over the past five years. I have come to develop a strong working relationship with he and the other priests in the Liverpool Parish and have most appreciated his support and guidance. He will be missed but I know that the Spirit leads him on to do God’s work elsewhere and I wish him luck and want him to know that we are praying for him. …..

This morning I attended a choir practice and I was reminded of the joy that music brings to our hearts. The students’ talent never ceases to amaze me and as a result of this visit today, I am so excited about our upcoming Inaugural School Mass. As well as celebrating the Eucharist together, it is also a wonderful opportunity to speand time together as a community. I am filled with enthusiasm watching the students prepare for this adventure and I know it will be a memorable occasion for all.

A couple of things about the mass that I do need to remind people of are as follows:

Students must be at school by 8am. We have booked a train and in order to get to St James Station on time, we will need to leave shortly after this.

Students will be required to be dressed in their correct Summer Uniform.

I wish you all a successful and joy-filled year!
