I am writing this message today in Kuala

International Malaysian Schools (AIMS)

Principals’ network meeting. AIMS is a

valuable network allowing International

Schools to discuss issues of mutual

interest, share practices and information,

as well as working together to provide

support and development for the students, staff and

schools in the association. Today’s meeting has a very

detailed agenda and includes items such as AIMS Young

Musician of the Year competition, Gifted and Talented

Students, Leadership programmes for Staff, university

entrance, overseas trips, and not surprisingly, the current

air quality ‐ a topic that is on every school’s mind at the

moment. Being part of this association enables us to

ensure that we share and match the best practices

available here in Malaysia.

Next week the Experiential Learning Programme depart

for their six different locations. It will be an exciting week

of adventure challenges. Please read the information

carefully in this newsletter about each trip as well as the

information that will be sent home today with your child.

This will include the contact information with the school

and how we will be communicating the news from each of

the trips during the week.

Progress Reports: Today sees the Secondary Progress Reports being distributed. Reports are addressed to parents and therefore upon arriving home this afternoon, students should hand their parents / guardians a sealed envelope containing these grade sheets. Please note that this is a progress report and only contains attainment and effort grades. Parent Teacher Consultations: There will be no timetabled secondary classes taking place on Tuesday 27 October, as this day has been set-aside for our first Parent Teacher Consultation for this academic year. It is extremely important that all parents attend the day to meet their child’s teachers and to discuss their progress. Each consultation lasts for a maximum of five minutes and all appointments must be pre-arranged by parents, using the new Online System, School Bookings. You will receive more information about this in the coming weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further concerns. Key Stage 3 Information Evening Thank you to those parents and students who attended last night’s Key Stage 3 Information Evening. I was very impressed with the turn out and the involvement of parents asking extremely important questions. The new Key Stage 3 Handbook was distributed and comments were very positive. Thank you to Mr Rose and Ms Easton for organising the evening and also all of the key staff who gave valuable input to the handbook. Experiential Learning Programmes Next week sees all of the secondary students in Year 7-12 head off on their Experiential Learning trips, accompanied by a majority of the academic staff. Mr Bill Mitchell and the Heads of Year have worked extremely hard to organise these trips and I have full confidence in them being a huge success. Can parents please ensure students are dropped off and picked up at the advised times. It is very important that everyone respects each other and punctuality is necessary when dealing with large groups. I will be leading the Year 11 trip to Krabi and therefore will not be in school next week, however there will be three members of the Secondary Management Team on campus; Mr Paul Rose, Mr Bill Mitchell and Mr Andy Cartlidge. Primary Curriculum News

A very busy first half term has seen students taking part in a range of activities during curriculum

time; Table Tennis and Touch Rugby at the start of the term, Badminton and Hockey at the

moment. With the half term coming to a close we will be finishing with a week of games based

activities to end the units.

After the break all students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be looking at an 8 week unit of Athletics in

preparation for their Sports Morning on Thursday 17th December. Hopefully with the added

time we are giving this unit this year we will see some significant progress both in terms of

understanding and performance.

Next Monday see’s our first Inter‐House event of the year with the Year 4 to Year 6 Aquathlon.

Can all students from Year 4 to Year 6 please remember to bring PE clothing as well as their usual

Swim Kit. All who remember their kit and take part will score 1 point for their house, with

additional points being awarded for those finishing 1st to 5th Boy and Girls respectively. The

distances involved are:

Roar Sport

Fixtures are coming thick and fast at the moment. It is great to see so many involved representing

the school, and with the busy October/November period now upon us I am sure the work put in

on the practice field will see our squads perform with their usual levels of skill, understanding,

fitness and sportsmanship.

Good luck to our O15 Boys and O15 Girls footballers in action tomorrow in their respective PSAC

Tournaments.

IB Psychology – Psych News

It has been an exciting and busy first half of the term in Psychology. The Year 13 IB Diploma

students have completed their Internal Assessments whereby they conducted ethical

psychological experiments with the great support of many of the Uplands student body. On

behalf of the Year 13’s we thank you for participating in a variety of memory and sense perception

activities. There will be other opportunities for students to get involved in psychology related

pursuits as the year progresses.

The Year 12 IB students have just begun their journey into the world of Psychology. Their current

focus is on the biological level of analysis that is used to investigate human behaviour. They have

explored the workings of the human brain and nervous system and have just learnt about how

hormones impact behaviour. Be it oxytocin influencing love, trust and generosity or the

importance of listening to your body when melatonin flushes the body at night to indicate that it

is time to go bed. These chemicals play a big part in who we are and how we function.

To learn the parts of the human brain the students made their own playdoh and constructed

models of this amazing organ. Below is an example of how the ‘boys’ interpreted the task.

In the discipline of Psychology students try to unpack many of the mysteries of human behaviour

and dispel some of its myths through investigating phenomena using the scientific method. Stay

The photos included in this week’s newsletter reflect another eventful week throughout

Primary. To finish the week, today Year 6 were Batik‐making in Teluk Bahang and Year 5

children were presenting their summative assessments to complete this unit of inquiry. Today I

also met with the Class Parents Reps as we begin planning for the Primary Halloween Party

now that October is here.

Congratulations to Ms Sielina and husband Andriy. Their baby boy arrived on September 25 at

2:57pm, weighing 3.415 kg. While Ms Sielina is on leave, we welcome back Mrs. Debbie

Howard.

Next week most Secondary students and many Secondary staff will be off campus for their

Experiential Learning trips. The campus will be less crowded but no less noisy as we utilize the

extra space available.

We hope you can join us on Monday for our Primary Sharing Assembly hosted by Year 4,

beginning promptly at 2:00pm in the Mesra area.

Mathletics and Reading Eggs: We have registered Primary children to use “Reading Eggs” and

“Mathletics” for this academic year. All students should have, or will very soon, receive user

names and passwords to access the sites. Reading Eggs and Mathletics are online reading and

maths programmes that children can use at school and at home.

Students in Year 6s have had a successful start with their Mathletics, achieving: Top Class in

Asia for 2 days, 9th in the world, Daisy Top Student in Asia, Angel 4th, Mike 8th, Ritsuko 9th,

Toshiki 10th in Asia. Well done!

Experiential Learning Programme ‐ Behavioural Expectations

As we approach one week to go before departure the Heads of Year are continuing preparation

and sharing information with students. One such message is about behavioural expectations.

Uplands expects students to uphold, ʺRespect for Self. Respect for Others.ʺ As we will be outside

the school environment, students must listen closely and follow through on directions from

support staff and the supervising teachers. If a student endangers themselves or others we will

be contacting the parents to arrange transportation for your child back home, domestically or

internationally. Safety is the essential ingredient here and it must be ensured for the individual

and the group.

As mentioned at the Parent Information Evenings we are requesting that students increase their

time spent away from electronic devices and engaged with their peers. The Trip Leaders will be

sending updates on each trip and Mr. Bristow and I will update the Uplands School Facebook

Year 7 ELP trip reminders:

Last Monday, I gave all students a copy of the itinerary and a more detailed packing list which

details what students need for each activity. This is to assist with packing.

We will be leaving school by bus on Monday 5th October at 9 am. Students should come to

school at the normal time of 8am in order to register and to get onto the bus on time. Please leave

all large baggage at the bottom of F‐Block so that students are not hauling their bags around.

We will be returning to school on Friday 9th October by approximately 2:30pm. Please collect

your child at that time from the school premises.

Students should have a bag with all their clothes/equipment for the trip and a day pack that has

their camera, book, snacks and water bottle for the bus trip down to Ipoh.

I will be ringing the school each day for updates, and to inform the school of our arrival and

departure. Communication to and from the sites will be centralized at Uplands where you will

find updates on our Facebook page, and in an emergency, please contact me through Mr.

Mitchell, Head of Pastoral or Mr. Bristow, Principal.

in, trainers advised for the hike. Old clothes to paint in.

TOILETRIES – Sun cream, mosquito repellant, water bottle are essentials.

EXTRAS – Remember journal and pencils to fill it in, camera if you wish, please bring an empty

2 litre water bottle (find out why when you get there). All packed in soft travel bag not a big

suitcase.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION –

∙ If you are found with a phone or electrical device you will have it confiscated for the duration

of the trip.

∙ Bring up to 100rm for snack purchases whilst you are there plus lunch on the Friday which

you will need to provide for yourself when we stop for lunch at a rest stop.

MONDAY ‐ ARRIVE at school no later than 5.50am

FRIDAY – ARRIVE back at school no later than 4.30pm

Make sure someone is able to drop you off and pick you up.

Study in advance: keys to ICT academic excellence.

I am a Year 10 student and have completed all the Years 10 IGCSE ICT work. I am

currently doing Year 11 assignments. In addition to those achievements, Mr Liao

also gave me the opportunity to participate in the International Scratch

Programming Competition. It was a delightful and worthwhile experience that

enabled us to explore our skills and challenge ourselves.

I think that the keys to academic excellence, for me, are independent learning and

hard work.

My ICT teacher, Mr Liao, once told me “It’s important to self‐teach yourself

course content in advance and it will help you to study the topics at least one week before your teacher

teaches it in class.”

ICT has impacted me greatly and I enjoy the subject. Besides practising the I.T skills in my own time, I

think that finding the actual subject fun really helps me in the area of I.T as enjoying it motivates me. I

feel that my effort and productivity will help me achieve my goal to become a programmer in the

future.

Year 7 Edible Colour Wheels

This week, Year 7 have been learning about the colour wheel and learning about how to mix

secondary and tertiary colours. Instead of mixing with paints, we have been using icing sugar,

food colouring and biscuits. I think that they had a great time eating the final products!!

Do Something Society leaders Kyling Saw, Vanessa Gehrig and Eashan Sharma invited Esther

and the children from Crystal Family Home here to Uplands for a visit last Friday after school.

Crystal Home is the DSS’s chosen charity this year, and the leaders wanted DSS members to

meet the children they will be supporting both practically and by fundraising throughout the

year.

Crystal Family Home, a non‐profit, voluntary, welfare organisation, was established in 2009 by

Esther and her husband Barnabas to help children who need a home. The children come from

difficult family backgrounds such as abuse, neglect, very poor, dysfunctional, or being raised

by grandparents who are no longer able. Esther and Barnabas provide residential care and a

family atmosphere for these children in their house in Air Itam. They currently have 15

children staying with them. Theirs is not a big house.

DSS members have already planned several events throughout the year – this afternoon’s DSS

Football Tournament and November’s DSS Relay Marathon being two of them, to raise funds to

help the home. When they asked Esther what they could do to directly support the children,

she wondered if they could provide weekly English sessions for the younger children whose

confidence in speaking and reading English is low. Not ones to hang about, plans are already

afoot to respond to this suggestion and sessions will begin shortly after half term!
