ACTRESS and TV presenter Denise Van Outen will fi re the gun at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes at 0600 on June 25 to send off a record breaking fl eet for the 80th Round the Island Race.

She will be joined by Michelle Luke, a Social Worker at the Royal Victoria Infi rmary, Newcastle, who won the draw for the ‘Buy a Mile’ charity fund raising promotion run by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

With 1,856 entries registered by the beginning of June the race around the Isle of Wight sponsored by J.P. Morgan Asset Management was set to live up to its reputation as Britain’s favourite yacht race and one of the biggest in the world.

The fourth biggest participation sports event after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Fun Runs was set to break the previous record of 1,875 of entries before the June 18 closing dates.

As complete novices to sailing, they will be in safe hands with fellow Essex local, top British 470 Olympian and Team Volvo for life sailor, Saskia Clark. Saskia is confident that they can prove the ‘only way is Essex’ and beat the fellow Team Volvo for life sailors also competing in the race on board J109s.

The Team Volvo for life sailors are taking time out of their busy training schedules to join more than 16,000 competitors in the Race.

One of Britain’s leading Paralympic sailors, Helena Lucas and Nick Dempsey, Olympic bronze medallist and 2009 World Champion RS: X Windsurfer, will also both be sailing in J109s.

Nick said: “I’m pretty excited to be taking part in my first J.P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. Getting to grips with competing in a J109 could take me a while as I have always windsurfed, but, I’m really up for taking part and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

The ‘Match Race Girls’ - sisters Lucy and Kate Macgregor, two thirds of top international Women’s Match Race team and current World Champions, will show their competitive spirit as they battle it out against each other.

The girls will each be joined by a crew of three, including some of the country’s best youth sailors, members of the RYA Volvo Team GBR squad. Laser Radial sailors, Rheanna Pavey and Cameron Douglas and local 29er Lymington sailors Sam Battern and Henri Lloyd Williams were recently selected for July’s ISAF Youth Worlds, Croatia, and are looking forward to sailing with the girls.

The Team Volvo for life sailors are estimating a time of around eight hours to complete the 50 nautical mile course as they circumnavigate the Isle of Wight.

Triple Olympic gold and silver medallist Ben Ainslie has also been confirmed he will race on board a Ker 40 entered as J.P. Morgan Asset Management with 2003 World Cup rugby star Will Greenwood on board.

They will be joined by ace navigator Mike Broughton. This is one major yachting event that has so far escaped Ben’s clutches as far as picking up the main prize, the Gold Roman Bowl, is concerned, so this is another high profile and competitive entry to watch out for.

But the race is not just about sailing superstars and records. For amateur enthusiasts it is a special day of fun and testing themselves and their crews. Many of them only race once a year in this classic leaving Cowes- the home of yachting – in the early morning an

The official charity, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, is including a sailing simulator with a leader board for visitors to beat a few well-known sailing personalities and there will be a Segway Challenge and climbing wall sessions.

The ‘Round the Island in 80 years’ Exhibition will be on shown in the Events Centre in Cowes Yacht Haven from Friday 10.00 – 16.00 hrs and on Saturday from 10.00 – 16.00 hrs.

Race partners are making sure there’s plenty of fun and competition with Nautica Watches throwing down the gauntlet to see who can post the fastest time on the Lewmar grinder machine.

Haven Knox-Johnston will hold a fun Spot the Buoy competition on their stand and Henri Lloyd will run an F1 simulator and competition to produce the fastest lap time. Volvo Car UK will have a prominent display in the Race Village.

Panther unleashed on Southampton WaterPOWERBOAT P1 demonstrated the new P1 Panther 28SS boat at Ocean Village in Southampton last month.

The 28-foot sport racer was unveiled ahead of the opening round of the fi ve-race UK SuperStock Series which starts in Jersey on June 11 and 12 and fi nishes in Liverpool on September 10 and 11.

The P1 Panther 28SS is powered by a 250+hp Evinrude engine propelling the boat to speeds of up to 70mph in fl at water. Its lower centre of gravity provides greater stability and improved handling.

The Panther is designed for dual purpose, so it can be raced then turned into a leisure boat for its next outing by simply removing the rear cowling.

Powerboat P1 Management Ltd, the rights-holder for the championship, has introduced the new boat and one-make class of racing into its fl agship SuperStock Championship this year to broaden the appeal of powerboat competition.

Chief Operating Offi cer Robert Wicks said: “When you’re racing with the same boat, same engine and same performance, the only difference

between winning and losing is the driver and navigator in the boat,”

The Panther will be raced in both the UK and the United States but Powerboat

P1 is currently in negotiation with promoters in Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Far East and South America about rolling out internationally in 2012.

TOP woman powerboat racer Shelley Jory is returning to racing for the fi rst time since she crashed out of the Powerboat GPS World Championship half way through the 2010 season.

The Spirit of Belgium Boat she was racing sank in Sardinia. Following weeks of recovery and months wondering whether she would race again, Shelley is now ready to get back in a race boat.

The All at Sea columnist said: “If someone had said to me at the end of last year or even a couple on months ago I would be back in a race boat looking for another British title when the season started, I wouldn’t have believed them!”

Shelley, 41, will race in the new P1 Stock 250 Panther Class as Team Helvetia Wealth sponsored by the fi nancial

services provider founded in Zurich, Switzerland.

Joining her as navigator is former Zapcat Team Champion and close family friend Dan Smith, as well as husband Trevor as the team’s Chief Engineer.

SuperStock has its foundations in the former Honda Formula Four Stroke Series which ran successfully for the last ten years under the stewardship of eight-times Powerboat World Champion, Steve Curtis.

CALENDAR

THEY say ten is the awkward age – too old to cry but too young to swear.

There may have been something about girls in it too . . .

Perhaps it should be used to say. In contemporary times who knows what goes at age ten? We are allowed to cry whenever and as for swearing . . .

Whatever, as All at Sea reaches the grand old age of ten this month let’s hope we are not awkward.

We are certainly not too old to shed a tear, or at least a sigh, when things go wrong on the water or when centuries old traditions are compromised for no clearly apparent reason.

And we are certainly not too young to curse when people behave badly or without thought for others on the water or when petty bureaucrats, or grossly overbearing governments, abandon commonsense (if they ever understood the term).

Indeed, the application of inappropriate, silly, unnecessary and certainly unwanted political correctness will continue to make

us both cry and swear, whatever our age.

We are, as the label says, for all at sea, so we shall try to be awkward in spotlighting daft threats to anyone’s boating pleasures and in speaking up for anyone who goes on to the water, anywhere, whatever their craft and however they are propelled.

Wish us happy birthday. Just like any ten year old we need your love and support!

POWERING ONONE person who is certainly not at an awkward age deserves a cheer and our admiration this month.

All at Sea columnist Shelley Jory thought it might be the end of her powerboat racing career when she crashed and sank in Sardinia last year.

But she shrugged off what she thought were mere bumps and bruises and she has overcome any psychological fears, to which she was more than entitled, to get back behind the racing wheel.

What a gal!

THAT AWKWARD AGE

LEADING ORDINARY LIVESANOTHER of our columnists gives us all a vital reminder about people with disabilities.

Geoff Holt bounced back - he sometimes makes us think almost literally - from breaking his neck in a Caribbean swimming accident to become the fi rst paraplegic to cross the Atlantic without sailing assistance.

This month he congratulates the Jubilee Sailing Trust on its 25th anniversary year and praises its magnifi cent work.

But he also gently chides the charity because those who use powered wheel chairs have to give them up and use an ordinary lightweight manual wheelchair on board the trust’s vessels.

Geoff’ powered chair is his independence, he says, and it doesn’t want to give that up.

Quite. Getting on and off boats is an ordinary activity for most us. People who use wheelchairs deserve ordinary pleasures too.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. If anyone can achieve it, it is the JST.

A RECORD-breaking entry of more than 1,000 of the world’s top Olympic and Paralympic sailors bid to claim early supremacy on the 2012 Olympic waters of Weymouth and Portland in this year’s Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.

With a confirmed entry of 1050 sailors, in 740 boats, from 62 nations, competition within every class will be extremely fierce, with many of the sailors bidding to show their Olympic selectors why they should be in contention to represent their country at next year’s games.

No fewer than 11 reigning Olympic and Paralympic champions, and a whole host of Beijing 2008 and World medallists, will do battle across a total of 13 classes

when 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta takes place between 6 - 11 June.

The regatta is the penultimate event of the seven-round ISAF Sailing World Cup.

Among those Beijing gold medallists looking to throw down the gauntlet to their challengers at are Kiwi RS:X master Tom Ashley, who will face a stiff challenge from a competitive fleet, including Dutchman Dorian Van Rijsselberge, Skandia Team GBR’s Nick Dempsey, the 2009 World champion, and Poland’s Piotr Myszka, the 2010 World Champion, if he is to claim his first Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta title.

Britain’s Beijing bronze medallist Bryony Shaw will also want to make a big impact on her home waters.

Three-time world champion Tom Slingsby of Australia is reigning Olympic champion Paul Goodison’s biggest rival in the Laser, while 2010 Worlds bronze medallist, Andrew Murdoch of New Zealand presents another danger.

The Laser Radial is also poised for an intriguing battle between ISAF World Cup Series leader and the 2010 worlds silver medallist Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands and double world champion Suri Multala of Finland.

COWES sailing clubs and classes have highlighted in their sailing instructions the hazards associated with the unique location of racing start lines across the main harbour fairway.

All Cowes yacht clubs have now implemented a notification procedure that has been developed with the involvement of Cowes Clubs and Classes, Red Funnel and Cowes Harbour Commission.

The notification gives advance warning to Red Funnel Ferries and Cowes Pilots of racing using a Cowes shore line start, this enables the master, when practicable, to avoid crossing the start lines during the final moments of the starting sequence so as not to

adversely affect the start of a race.But that not always be possible so all

race boats are asked to:• Comply with the Collision

Regulations and Sailing.• Think of the perspective of the

commercial vessel’s bridge crew, who for very good reasons, will not have the same interpretation of “keeping clear”

• Listen to the VHF - CH 37 if racing. • Keep a good lookout. • Think ahead.The Harbour Commissioners praised

The skipper in question accepted a race ban from the class association which sent a very clear message about the importance of strict adherence to the

rules of navigation at all times. The commissioners say it is vital that

yachtsmen keep a good look out, think ahead and remember that participating in a yacht race offers is not an opportunity to ignore the Collision Regulations.

Clubs and classes take lead in safety

SPECTATORS on the banks of the Lymington River would be forgiven for thinking it was the early 1900s as ladies dressed in elegant long navy and white dresses joined gentlemen in reefers and caps and crews in white overalls prepared their classic wooden boats for sea.

The boats were being given their final polish before the start of the XOD Lymington Division’s celebration of the Class Centenary.

A fleet of 31 of the beautiful 21-foot keelboats, first raced in Southampton Water in June 1911, mustered on the start line in the Solent.

Lymington’s resident fleet was joined by a dozen or so from the Yarmouth Division and members of the Itchenor and Parkstone divisions also attended.

Despite a stiff easterly breeze, crews were determined to show off their period costumes and resisted putting on their oilskins.

“We had an excellent afternoon on the water,” said winner Ado Jardine. “We were a bit damp by the end but the organisers certainly ordered the right weather!”

The ‘Best Dressed Crew’ award went to the crew of X 119 Lonestar.

Danebury Vineyards, a Hampshire vineyard that sponsored the Edwardian Race Day reception.

The Lymington Edwardian Race is one of a series of events taking place to mark the XOD Class Centenary.

Celebrations will continue during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week when the XODs will run their own three-day Centenary regatta within their usual racing programme, also sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, from 9th - 11th August. The XOD Class is the largest class to start at Cowes, with a record-breaking 100 boats expected on the start line in this year.

TOUGH windy sailing conditions proved testing for more than 300 young Optimist sailors at the Volvo Gill Optimist Inland Championships at Grafham Water Sailing Club.

Racing was abandoned for the Regatta fleet’s racing without any races completed. The wind was lighter for the second day with around 12 knots, gusting 14/15 allowing the fleet to complete five races.

The 200 main fleet sailors managed six races over the weekend with Optimist World Squad member, Matt Whitfield, 14, from Penarth Sailing Club taking the overall win by eight points from fellow World Squad member, Sarah Norbury, 14, from South Staffordshire Sailing Club.

European Squad member, Jemima Lawson, 14, from Emsworth Sailing Club finished third on equal points to Sarah. Jemima sailed well and consistently over the weekend but Sarah finished the second day winning two consecutive

races, to take second. It was also close at the top of the

Regatta fleet with William Heathcote, nine, from Royal Lymington Yacht Club and James Hammett, 11, from Papercourt Sailing Club both finishing with nine points apiece.

They were followed closely by Marrhew Ke Vasseur, 12, from Guernsey Yacht Club.

Top girl in the fleet was Zoe James, 12, from Papercourt Sailing Club who finished fifth overall.

Royal Lymington Yacht Club and Papercourt Sailing Club dominated the Regatta fleet with three sailors from each club finishing in the top ten.

The next UK National event on the Optimist calendar is the Volvo Gill National Open British Championships, to be held at Pwllheli Sailing Club from 30 July to 5 August. The event attracts around 500 Optimist sailors from around the globe and will also be celebrating its 50th anniversary.

SAIlORS finding themselves in need of a helicopter rescue in the next year could find it comes courtesy of a pint of real ale.

exeter Brewery has created an ale called Fraid Not specially to raise money for helicopter search and rescue charity operations in the South West.

Alan Colyer of the brewery said: “ten pence of every pint sold in the next year will go to the helicopter charity. We’re hoping sailors will enjoy it.”

Rogers on top LYMINGTON–based Rogers Yacht Design celebrated a clean sweep in the second edition of the Normandy Channel Race. Tanguy de Lamotte and Sébastien Audigane (Initiatives Saveurs) took first with Bruno Jourdren and Fabien Delahaye (Port de Caen Ouistreham) second and Damien Seguin and Yohann Richomme (Des Pieds et Des Mains) in third. All were aboard their tried and tested Rogers Class 40 designs.

Starting at Caen the 1,000 mile race took the fleet around the Isle of Wight, around Lands End to starboard, Tuskar Rock off the coast of the south coast of Ireland, around Guernsey and finally to the finish in Caen.

THE National Museum of the Royal Navy will be looking its best for the celebrations of 100 years of naval heritage within Portsmouth Dockyard.

And figurehead historian Richard Hunter has been bringing the bust of Lord Nelson back to its former glory on HMS Trafalgar in Victory Arena.

Richard and his colleague Philip Hudson attracted a lot of visitor attention and questions as they spent over a week on site, painting the figurehead with fast drying enamel paint that should ensure the figurehead’s future for the next decade.

One of Richard’s favourite parts of the process is painting the faces as many of them have lost their character and he can help bring them back to life.

Eagle-eyed visitors will also notice that this time around Nelson is without detail of his right eye as per the original figurehead of 1841.

Nelson famously lost the sight in his right eye at the siege of Calvi on 10 July 1794 and this is how sailors would have recognised the image of him. The eye has been painted in for previous restorations but it has been returned

to its original form to celebrate 100 years of naval heritage.

Other details that can be noticed are the medal decorations. After detailed research Richard has changed the gold version of the Order of the Crescent, which was a decoration created by Sultan Selim III in August 1799 specifically to honour Nelson on the first anniversary of the Battle of Nile, and would have originally been silver.

The one original feature to be left untouched as it was still in good condition was the Breast Star of the Order of the Bath, awarded to Lord Nelson for his role at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797.

Over the past 20 years Richard Hunter has become increasingly involved in a number of important figurehead restoration projects around the world.

He said: “Important and valuable relics of the world’s rich maritime heritage have been allowed to just simply rot away; the catalogue of lost carvings grows each year.”

Nelson gets a make-over

The plaque accompanying the figurehead reads:

H.M.S. TRAFALGARBuilt as a First Rate of 120 guns

at Woolwich and completed in 1841, 2694 tons.

Took part in the bombardment of Sebastopol in 1854, being towed to

her position in the line by the RETRIBUTION (paddle).

Converted to a two deck screw ship of 90 guns at Chatham in

1858-59 and in 1873 was renamed BOSCAWEN, when she became a seaman boy’s training ship at

Portland. Sold in 1905, the year in which boy’s training became shore

based at Shotley near Ipswich.

AS part of activities to celebrate 100 years of naval heritage within the dockyard, the National Museum of the Royal Navy is offering visitors a chance to step back in time.

A new trail around the galleries gives them a chance to discover the artefacts which fascinated the first museum visitors in 1911.

2011 is a landmark year for the museum – formerly known as the Royal Naval Museum. Over the past 100 years the Museum has worked to preserve the rich and diverse heritage of the Royal Navy bringing to life the stories of not only the events, but the personalities behind them.

The original museum - known as the Dockyard Museum - was conceived by Mr Pescott-Frost, then Secretary to the Admiral Superintendent at Portsmouth.

With a passion for naval history he devoted his free time to spearheading

a project to save items for future generations, eventually leading to the opening of a new museum. His foresight ensured the survival of many interesting and important artefacts, several of which are still on display today.

Some of the featured exhibits include the figurehead from HMS Bellerophon – the vessel on which Napoleon surrendered following his defeat at Waterloo and a large working model of HMS Vanguard used to teach cadets and apprentices how to set sails for varying weather conditions.

The end of May was the centenary of the launch of the Titanic that was lost after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic less than a year later in April 1912.

Once described as unsinkable, 1,490 of the 2,358 maiden voyage passengers perished.

Built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast the tragic ship will become the centerpiece of a major urban £7 billion regeneration project centred on the former shipbuilding yard.

The plans stretching over 185 acres with one mile of waterfront, include apartments, business, leisure, tourist and education facilities and will create 25, 000 new jobs.

The new Titantic Belfast building, due to open next April, will stand at the head of the original slipway.

With 400,000 visitors expected annually it is set to become the biggest built visitor centre in Northern Ireland to rival the Giant’s Causeway.

Titanic took three years to build – roughly the same amount of time it will take to build Titanic Belfast.

The 900-foot long Thompson Dock and Pump House was built to accommodate Titanic and her sister ships. The dock

provides a perspective on Titanic’s scale.When launched, the ship was the

largest moving man-made object in the world. She is sometimes described as the ‘space shuttle of the Edwardian era’

It features many rare artifacts from the liner’s passengers and crew. these include some of the beautiful china dinner plates, which served the first meals aboard the titanic, silverware, letters, linen and crew possessions.

Remarkable, must-see artifacts include a fountain pen, which belonged to the captain of the titanic, together with his Steiff bear and a cup presented to him in 1911 before the fateful voyage.

Perhaps most poignantly of all, visitors will also be able to see a beautiful 18 carat gold pocket watch which belonged to the head waiter Vincenzo Gilardino that stopped at 2.12am, as it entered the icy water.

NEWS IN BRIEF Cruisers go green and quiet inlandHOLIDAY cruisers on Europe’s rivers and canals are going green.

Cruising under electric power via a hi-tech electric engine and bank of solar batteries, inland waters operator Le Boat‘s new 1500 series provides environmentally conscious customers with a new green option.

The boats have a pod-drive system and hybrid diesel/electric cruising that is new to inland waterways cruisers.

Key features include easy manoeuvring via a joy stick allowing the boat to turn 360 degrees as well as forwards, sideways, backwards and diagonally in all directions.

The boats also have a normal steering wheel using a marine-style throttle and bow thrusters.

The Volkswagen Marine diesel is designed for fuel efficiency and emission control, as well as low noise and vibration levels.

VOLUNTEER crew members from Brighton inshore lifeboat and Newhaven all-weather lifeboat crews responded to a distress call from a stricken yacht on 26 May.

The 32-foot yacht had been on passage from Hamble, heading to Brighton Marina in readiness for a yacht race starting the following morning.

The crew were lowering their sails on approach to the marina when they were hit by a large wave that knocked them down and swept their skipper overboard.

The near gale force wind was gusting 35-40 knots, driving breaking waves of up to four metres through the yacht. Fortunately the skipper had been using a safety line so he remained in contact with the yacht – but he was now left suspended dangerously over the side, battered by the wind and waves, unable to free himself.

The crew attempted to pull him back on board but were unable to do so, so they broadcast the MAYDAY distress call on VHF channel 16.

Solent Coastguard alerted the RNLI Brighton inshore lifeboat, which

launched at 1.17pm – within seven minutes of being paged. Newhaven all-weather lifeboat (pictured to the right of the stricken yacht) was also tasked.

The Brighton crew took ten minutes to power through the waves and reach the yacht. Despite the conditions, a lifeboat crew member managed to climb aboard the yacht and the skipper was safely lifted back on board.

the situation now under control, the yacht was escorted through the marina entrance and on to the safety of a visitors’ berth.

Given the horrendous conditions on scene, Solent Coastguard rescue helicopter 104 and mobile Coastguard units had also been also tasked to assist.

A spokesman for RNLI Brighton lifeboat said: “Praise goes to the crew of the yacht who, during this extremely stressful

incident, in hostile conditions, managed to remain calm throughout. The sea in that area on a day like today is confused and steep and this incident highlights dramatically the importance of wearing a lifejacket and safety line when working on the deck of a yacht in these conditions.”

Danny Oliver, the skipper added: “Very thankful for the guys who turned out to help – very professional.”

A strong tidal rip current prevented them from swimming back to shore and they waved for help. A teenage boy who was out walking took a rescue ring and swam out to try to give assistance. the Burry Port lifeboat crew launched their inshore Atlantic 75 which took the three teenagers back to shore.

How do you choose a marina?

OK, I admit it, sometimes when I travel around the UK I book my accommodation last minute, normally in an effort to save a few quid.

Often with all these fancy last minute websites I will be given a choice of a number of hotels and B&B’s near to where I have my next engagement.

When faced with a choice of two hotels for £50 a night there is not much to choose between them, however if one

hotel has three stars and one has two stars I will normally go for the one with three stars, unless of course the two star promises a large fry up!

With this in mind how does one choose a suitable marina to stay at when planning a cruise? Cost, facilities location?

Well, the Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) has completely revamped its Gold Anchor Award Scheme.

Now marinas will be rated between one and fi ve Gold Anchors by independent assessors.

Not only do the marinas have mystery shoppers and stringent criteria to keep them busy but they also have environmental considerations to take into account. These include ensuring that all of their operations do not result

in oil or fuel entering the water as well as being encouraged to install sewage pump-out facilities, which for those of us who spend time in the water from capsizing smaller vessels will appreciate.

Marinas are encouraged to manage the fl otsam and jetsam and this means that your boat won’t be surrounded by plastic objects blown into the marina from the nearest town. Meticulous cleaners at Mayfl ower Marina in Plymouth have found infl atable alligators to boomerangs.

I was recently invited to join TYHA assessors for a mock up marina inspection and was very pleased about how certain practises have now changed, resulting in less potential pollution on the river and less muck surrounding the boats.

Over the last few years it has become harder to fi nd marinas at capacity except perhaps at the PSP Southampton Boat Show marina. This means that marinas are fi nding themselves in even more competition with each other which is great for boat owners.

As a savvy group of boaters, the more of us who ask why the marina does not have a pump-out facility or spill kits available next to the fuel berth the more likely that we can use consumer power to infl uence some positive change.

So, when you are planning your next cruise why not look at which marinas have Gold Anchors and plan your journey accordingly.

Back at the helm at lastWELL, I wasn’t sure whether this day would actually happen and I had resigned myself to not racing this season.

I would probably have been a bit bored and lost not mixing it up at events with my fellow racers. I would certainly have missed the buzz and adrenaline rush racers get from waiting on the start line through to the chequered fl ag.

If someone had said to me at the end of last year or even a couple on months ago that I would be back in a race boat looking for another British title when the season begins, I wouldn’t have believed them!

But as always in powerboat racing things change and here I am facing my fi rst race of a championship with a new team, new boat, but somewhat familiar race series in the new P1 Superstock 250 Championships.

This race series is like the very successful Honda 4 Stroke series – one design, affordable racing and hellishly competitive!

I’m glad to say I’ve got that buzz again, the pre-season build up feeling, the wanting to be back behind the wheel waiting for the green fl ag to drop and it feels good.

June 11 and 12 will see me competing in the fi rst round of the 2011 RYA National P1 Stock Championship in Jersey.

Joining me on this new adventure is my husband Trevor as the team’s chief engineer and my navigator Dan Smith. He used to help me test in my Honda days when Libby wasn’t available.

When I look at him I see a young man who as a boy was knee high to a grass hopper but always eager to please and just happy to be around boats.

As we came back from testing he would ask if he could clean my boat for me. A family friend, he was soon helping during testing. From this I’ve seen him grow into a powerboat racer and apprentice marine engineer and former Zapcat Team Champion.

25 years asa national treasureTO think we have been watching the magnifi cent Lord Nelson come and go from her home in Southampton for a quarter of a century, and her younger sister, the equally imposing Tenacious, is now celebrating her tenth year in service.

I recall being present at her keel-laying ceremony in 1996 in a vast warehouse in Woolston, the same warehouse

where Merlin engines had been built for Spitfi re’s during the war. Four years later she was launched and joined the Lord Nelson in active service and, such is the demand for their services, the pair have rarely paused to draw breath.

Between them, they have taken more than 36,000 people to sea. And of that number, 13,000 have been people with physical disabilities, giving them a genuinely unique opportunity to sail a tall ship alongside non-disabled crew and to participate in just about every activity on board, including being hoisted aloft in wheelchairs.

You need only to read the glowing testimonials from any of their participants on their website to understand the sense of esteem they are held in by their fans. And that loyalty

and love of the JST is evident as groups around the country raise much needed money to keep the two sisters afl oat.

One excited crew member joining the STS Tenacious this month will be Louise Pack. Lou is an artist and fi lm-maker and she will be undertaking a four-day voyage to capture images to be used in an exciting maritime art installation next year.

Inspired by the poems from “The Silence at the Son’s End” by Nicholas Heiney. Lou told me: “Everyone aboard, whatever their ability will be part of the installation. Heiney’s poem will be re-imagined in a sea-spray of pictures and sounds as the crew master their charge and their fears.

“The fi lm will be a visual poem juxtaposing images of people pushing

their boundaries, the unyielding demands of the ship and the unforgiving elements themselves. Art and the sea are old friends, but art moves on”.

The ten minute fi nished work will be projected on to a 360 degree panoramic dome in Weymouth during the Olympic and Paralympic sailing regattas and during the Cultural Olympiad in 2012.

As part of the JST’s celebrations this year, both vessels will be visiting a number of ports around the country and, during August and September, the Lord Nelson will be sailing down the east coast from Ipswich to Great Yarmouth. There are still some berths available and there are bursaries available which, if successful, could part fund your voyage costs.www.jst.org.uk

WHILST the public perception is that the JST caters for all disabled people, some people with learning disabilities are excluded if deemed unable to follow safety instructions from permanent crew.

And people like myself who use powered wheelchairs are also denied physical access.

I think it is about time a 150-foot merchant vessel could accommodate them.

I should clarify that powered wheelchair users are welcome, however they must leave their chair behind and use the ship’s lightweight wheelchair.

But that completely misses the point; I’m independent and I don’t feel disabled in my electric wheelchair – the moment I’m in a lightweight manual-wheelchair, I feel disabled again.

Hopefully new CEO Alex Lochrane will put this on his “to do” list. If so, I’m at the front of the queue please.

But personal disappointment aside - because I’m desperate to go on a voyage with them - the JST is a national treasure and I have yet to hear a bad word from anyone who has sailed with them.

STICKY’S TIPSBY STICKY STAPYLTON

BACK home and catching up on ten weeks’worth of emails, bank statements, credit card bills et al, I have refl ected on some of the major lessons of the delivery to Turkey from Burnham-on-Crouch.

We should have allowed longer for our shake down passages, a fortnight was not enough. We were still making changes to the rigging, reefi ng set up and equipment three weeks into the passage. Luckily we were still in the

UK and could easily make changes. The owners’ original plan had been to deliver the boat to Marseille by road and then make their way to Turkey from there; I suspect that they are now happy that their initial sailing legs were close to the UK.

I am a great fan of Navtex, (see photo), the ability to receive weather forecasts up to 600 miles offshore is a great bonus, particularly when out of range of

VHF transmissions. I had recommended the

owners equip their boat with this, but they decided to install a plasma TV set in lieu. This had to be dismounted before setting sail and was wrapped in a duvet in the owners’ cabin whilst sailing.

When sailing through waters where the locals speak French, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Turkish it puts a bit of a strain on the translation game and

although we had one crew member who could speak three of these languages we were still without a fl uent Greek of Turkish speaker.

This is where Navtex plays its part because transmissions are in the language of the transmitting country plus English. You should receive continuous transmissions providing, of course, the country you are sailing past has signed up to the Global Maritime Distress Safety System.

Where we could get round this to a degree was with AIS (Automatic Identifi cation System). We had a plotter connected to our VHF radio and this, despite a number of shortcomings, could receive AIS transmissions.

Once well on passage, with no Navtex, our only means of gaining weather information was either to guess what was about to happen by observation and monitoring the barometer or to call up those vessels within range and ask for the latest weather forecast.

This is where AIS came in. By placing the cursor on the plotter on an AIS target, up came the name of the vessel, it’s callsign and MMSI, it’s CPA (closest point of approach) and TCPA (time of closest point of approach), that is how close we would get to this vessel and the likely time of that happening.

So, on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day we called up vessels and were

given the forecast. With some it worked fi ne, with others the language barrier prevented a detailed, full forecast; but as with all who go to sea, we generally received helpful information.

Some vessels just did not respond, there may well have been a good reason for this, but the majority had radio operators who were happy to help out. There were some who wanted to practise their English and one conversation continued for nearly half an [email protected]

KEEP IT FRESH

I HAVE just received an interesting bit of advice after my earlier comment about fruit ripening.

Apparently you can buy in Aldi a pack of discs designed to absorb ethylene gas which is responsible for the ripening of fruit, and the claim was that one of these in the fruit bowl would retard ripening for some weeks.

They may be a useful piece of kit on a longish passage, particularly with warm temperatures such as in the Med.

the RelAYS projectTHE Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport project is a programme of linked cultural and sporting opportunities that will generate a positive legacy beyond 2012.

RELAYS is one of the flagship Cultural Olympiad projects in the South West. It aims to inspire and engage young people and their diverse communities to participate in, produce and promote cultural work and sporting activities.

RELAYS will be running a series of events across the South West, working with students to make it happen.

The School Events Coordinator based

at Bournemouth University and the Cultural Coordinator based at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth will be working closely to ensure the ‘wedding of art and sport’ is achieved.

They are tasked with delivering a series of sporting and cultural school events across Dorset, whilst up-skilling students that are involved in the process.

For the young people participating, the events that take place will provide an exciting opportunity to try out a variety of new sporting and cultural activities.

RELAYS aims to leave a lasting legacy

beyond 2012 by embedding the events and festivals into the university and the Arts Institute, as well as in local communities across the county.

APPLICATIOnS to become a London 2012 Games Maker closed last year but if you missed the deadline, fear not . . .

The local volunteering scheme is set to launch very soon. The programme will give local people the chance to get right into the party spirit and be a critical part of Games time operations.

MAKE A DATE A channel system will be set up in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour to allow craft access to their own moorings and the open sea. This will allow 24 hour access from the start of the Olympics to the closing of the Paralympic Games. The Olympic and Paralympic race areas will have restricted access to all non-accredited boats during competition hours to ensure fair and safe racing. Temporary restrictions will be controlled by a Harbour Revision Order. The plan is to open the waters as soon as possible after each day of racing.

SMALL AT SEAJUST FOR KIDS

MEET Tilly Griffi ths. Tilly is 11 years old and has been sailing since she was three. She is a regular sailor at Rudyard Lake but the difference for Tilly is that she has a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy which means she has muscle weakness in her whole body leaving her with virtually no mobility and she gets around in a fi nger-tip powered wheelchair. But with her “can do” attitude she sails solo using just her fi nger tips, teaches her friends how to sail and is also currently learning how to race.

So we asked Tilly to tell us more about her sailing and why she loves it so much.

Small at Sea: So, how old were you when you started sailing?

Tilly: I started sailing with Rudyard Sailability when I was three years old. I was at Rudyard Lake with my family when one of the RYA Sailability volunteers suggested to my mum and dad that I might like a little trip on the water and that was that.

I used to sit on my mum’s knee in a double seated boat called an Access dinghy and learnt the ropes from the Sailability Principal, Dennis Priebe. Mum says I learnt the sailing really quickly as I’m a proper little sponge and

pick things up really quickly. When I was six I took control of the

boat myself using just my fi nger. It was really exciting and I started extra training after school with Rudyard Sailability Chief Instructor, Gary Lowe. Before I knew it I was preparing to sail solo. Dennis made me a specialised solo seat using polystyrene, which was painted pink. It worked a treat. It was an enormous thrill to sail solo, but I think Mum’s heart was in her mouth! Mum says there are all very proud of me as it took quite a bit of courage and skill.

Small at Sea: What type of boat do you sail?

Tilly: I sail a bright pink Access dinghy with electronic controls called Barbie which was donated to Rudyard Sailability

by Britannia Building Society. I love anything pink, so when Dennis came to visit me in hospital and tell me about the new boat I couldn’t help but smile and get better really quickly to have a sail in her.

Small at Sea: Who do you sail with?

Tilly: I have been learning to sail with my sister, Candice, and much to our amazement we have both now achieved our RYA Stage 2. Mum says if it wasn’t for my bright pink boat – it would be impossible to tell which of us had the disability. Sailing really is a ‘level playing fi eld’.

Small at Sea: What do you love most about sailing?

Tilly: When I was fi lmed sailing solo for the Pride of Britain 2008 awards, I said that sailing was my favourite activity, “because it gives me the chance to be free, with all the wind ...”

I also love that I can take my able-bodied friends out for a tour of the Lake, I’m even teaching my best friend how to sail! It’s also great that I can take my mum out with me and on a really windy day it’s great to tip the boat so that our pony tails dip in the water! It always makes mum squeal!

Small at Sea: What would you say to other young disabled people thinking about trying sailing for the fi rst time?Tilly: Some children with a disability might not consider sailing as a sport, but they really should give it a go. Contact your local Sailability centre now because it is the most amazing, thrilling, exciting, fun thing to be involved in, and it is also SAFE, as there are no risks taken that would put anyone in danger. There is nothing to fear except no wind!

It is also really ‘cool’ that I am able to be the one helping others for a change, to be the one giving

the instructions and to help others to have a fun time.

Small at Sea: Have you done or do you compete in any sailing competitions?

Tilly: At the end of last season I was practising racing turns in preparation for racing. Dennis, my coach, has been really impressed with how tight I can move around the marker, probably because I’m used to driving a big electric wheelchair in small spaces. I’m really looking forward to getting involved in racing.

Small at Sea: What are your future sailing aspirations?

Tilly: Through Sailability I get to meet other people who live with disability and hear about their sailing adventures, like going off on the tall ships. This is a trip I’d like to make myself one day.

I also was lucky enough to meet Sarah

Webb OBE when she came to sail with me on Rudyard Lake. Sarah really inspired me and I taught her how to use the electronic controls and she let me hold her Olympic medal. One day I’d love to win an Olympic medal of my own.

Small at Sea: What three words best describe sailing for you?

Tilly: Freedom, Thrilling and Cool.

Tilly would like to say a very big thank you to Rudyard Sailability for giving her this amazing opportunity. Tilly also does a great deal of charity work and to date has raised over £2 million for children with disabilities.

Predicting the weather and planning for the conditions is one of the most vital things you can do before you set off.

emma Slater from the RYA shows you how to get it right.

WITH a bit of prior knowledge and some careful preparation, you can make every trip as enjoyable and safe as possible.

We have put together some advice on how you can plan ahead for a safe and pleasant trip out on the water, along with a few things to look out for during your sail.

Take your TImealthough it shouldn’t be an arduous task you should start to look into some forecasts at least a week in advance, as it will help you get a rough idea of what to expect and aid you in getting a reliable prediction of what the wind strengths will be like.

We all know the weather can be unpredictable, even for the experts. So with that in mind, it’s important to take a more considered approach to your planning a couple of days before you set sail.

keep building up your predictions until just before you leave and always be prepared to set off earlier or later than intended if the conditions aren’t safe.

Vary your SourceSWhen it comes to your research, try to use as many different sources as you can, as some weather reports might not give you information about winds. This will help you build up an accurate prediction leading up to your trip.

The internet has revolutionised the way we predict the weather, offering a range of great sources that give up-to-date data on weather conditions around the world.keep going back to the same websites each day to keep track of any changes and try to view as many as you can. Some good sites include the met office (metoffice.gov.uk), which provides

weather forecasts for shipping and inshore waters – and you can also find surface pressure charts (used to show synoptic charts) online.

other useful websites include accuWeather, Xc Weather and BBc Weather, not to mention the rya homepage.

TradITIonal SourceSWhile it’s great to use the internet, you should also use the more traditional methods of newspapers, noticeboards and the shipping forecast which is available on BBc radio 4 and on navtex 518kHz.

you should also use coastguard reports and keep in contact with harbourmasters. and make sure you keep using these while out on the water, as you need to keep yourself abreast of what the weather will be like for the rest of your journey.

THe numerIcal ScaleThe Beaufort Scale will give you an excellent understanding of what to expect on the water. The scale, which links wind speed with the sea state in open waters, is available via weather reports, such as the shipping forecast. It ranges on a scale from 1 to 12, with 1 being light airs, 2-3 being ideal drifting conditions for sailing and 12 being the most extreme - over 64 knots, which is officially classified as a hurricane.

all SeT?once you are prepared and ready to go, it’s time to use the most important tool – yourself!

While you’re on the water, try to look at the shape of the land around you to see how it might affect the wind strength and directions. and you should also look out for any dark clouds that might be looming on the horizon and plan ahead accordingly.

THE sunshine is glorious, all the stresses of everyday life have been left at home and those people just off the beach pottering around in Picos look like they are having a brilliant time.

Every year thousands of Brits undertake watersports activities while on their holidays, often for the first time.

Whether dinghy sailing, windsurfing, big boat sailing, or personal watercraft, such as Jet-Skis, there is something alluring about being out on warm, inviting waters, learning something new and enjoying yourself, as part of your holiday abroad.

But how can you be sure that, wherever you are in the world, you are safe and learning the right things?

The RYA Tickmark is as powerful an indicator of safety and quality abroad as it is at home. With more than 2,300 recognised RYA Training Centres operating worldwide including far-flung places such as the Canary Islands, the Balearics, the Caribbean, Thailand, the Mediterranean, Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and the United

States you are sure to find somewhere you can be confident delivers the same standards you would expect at home.

As Craig Burton, the RYA’s Chief Cruising Instructor Sail Cruising, explains, the range of activities you can do whilst on holiday is mind-blowing but knowing exactly what you are signing up for is crucial.

“If a holiday company or sailing centre does not have the RYA Tickmark, there is no guarantee that they are using suitable, well-maintained boats, appropriately qualified instructors or that their safety procedures are rigorous and tested.

“It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security on holiday because people are relaxed and often see others out on the water enjoying themselves and think ‘I fancy a go at that’ without considering all the things they would if they were signing up for a course at home.”

Many people book activities through their holiday companies or hotels before they depart these shores. Some of those activities may not necessarily been

perceived as a ‘course’ in the formal way signing up for a training course at home would be.

For example, if you are taking part in a flotilla holiday there may be some training you undertake to be able to tackle certain tasks on board. This may all be very informal and part of the overall experience but in reality, that training could be essential for your safety. Companies whose training lead to the award of an RYA qualification will be using qualified instructors and suitable vessels.

Also make sure you are clear about exactly what you are booked for before you go.

Just like any recognised centre in Britain, an overseas centre is expected to comply with the regulations laid down as part of being an RYA Training Centre at all times.

Being a recognised Training Centre means suitably qualified staff, following the relevant national syllabus, using appropriate, well maintained equipment, with suitable safety support.

Centres working with Under 18s should have a child protection policy and procedures while other elements such as changing and onshore teaching facilities are taken into consideration when a centre is seeking to achieve, or maintain, its recognised RYA Training Centre status.

Centres should also have procedures in place to make sure anyone using their equipment or attending courses has the right level of experience or skill to participate safely, whilst there are strict

guidelines on pupil-instructor ratios. Even if a centre is providing recreational

dinghy sailing or windsurfing which does not include any tuition, each RYA recognised centre will have approved regulations on safety boat cover.

A huge number of centrally-coordinated RYA inspectors operate both at home and abroad ensuring standards do not waiver or vary across the world.

In some circumstances, where the RYA feels that a centre needs additional support or monitoring, two inspections per year may be required.

Craig continued: “The RYA Tick Mark primarily covers the safety and quality of training for RYA courses, but it does also extend to the overall culture within an organisation so even if you do not want to take a formal course, and just wish to informally use a centre’s equipment, you

should still look for the RYA Tick Mark. “Many people get their first taste

of sailing, windsurfing or personal watercraft on holiday and it is important that first experience is a positive one.

“Even if you are not sure what activity you want to do, any recognised RYA Training Centre will be able to help you chose the right course for you, depending on your experience and preference on type of vessel.

“The RYA Tickmark is the best way of ensuring you are likely to have a safe, enjoyable experience that you will want to repeat.”

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drinkIN THE DRINK

JUNE 2001, in the fi rst edition of All At Sea, I wrote: “For our launch, we just have to follow nautical tradition and have some Champagne.”

Despite today’s economic woes, Champagne, or at least a good fi zz, is still essential for a launch party, birthday, weddings or race-winning celebration.

Prices have, of course, risen since 2001. Then we recommended Balls Bros Joseph Perrier at £18 a bottle - today listed at £30 - and a Calais wine-run special ‘house’ Champagne from Beer & Wine (Majestic) that was £8 and is now £12.

Only part of the increase is higher grape costs. Much is due to fuel, duty and VAT increases. But all is not lost. Search around and Champagnes are still to be found at parity to 2001 prices.

Several supermarkets have Heidsieck Monopole at £20, good Champagne but not to be confused with Piper-Heidsieck, a new sponsor of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. Their upper quality Piper-Heidsieck NV sells at £30 a bottle at Waitrose.

Waitrose’s own Brut at £17 a bottle was much liked by my tasting panel. An even better deal is Tesco’s case offer of the very respectable Nicolas Feuillatte at only £14.50 a bottle.

Most Champagnes are blends from three grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier (both black grapes) and Chardonnay (white grapes). The well known variation Blanc de Blancs is made only from Chardonnay grapes and the less prevalent Blanc de Noir only from black Pinots.

The Champagne AOC area is centred around Epernay and Rheims. The average temperature a cool 10º C and the soil chalky, just like Kent, as English wineries point out.

The point is that all these grape varieties, soil, climate and blending expertise, can be created elsewhere. Alternative sparkling wines have made great progress over the last ten years and are now achieving very similar results to wine from the Champagne AOC. They have become increasingly

acceptable and even preferred by some for quality and taste, never mind the price advantage.

Cava is top quality Spanish ‘traditional method’ sparkling with its own Denominación de Origen, which is Catalonia in north-east Spain, embracing Barcelona and Valencia.

Codorniu, fi rst made in 1872, is top quality, not too dry. Freixenet Brut (in the matte black bottle) and La Rosca Brut are both excellent. All three about £7 a bottle. Generally Cavas are slightly less acidic than Champagnes and often chosen for this and their taste, not for their price.

Australian Jacobs Creek Sparkling is under £10 at Waitrose and a good outdoor drinker, as is New Zealand Lindauer at £12, made from NZ grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

English sparklings have become very successful. Cornwall Brut from Camel Valley Winery won ‘best sparkling’ in a recent international wine competition, beating ‘real’ Champagnes. Denbies from Dorking and Chapel Down from Tenterdon are also excellent fi zz. But expect £17 plus a bottle for these.

With quality like this it can be better to buy a top-of-the-range sparkling than a lowly ranked Champagne.

So the bubbles need not go out of our sailing lives! Just takes open-minded lateral thinking and enjoyable market testing to fi nd your favourite fi zz fi scal saviour.

IN our fi rst issue, June 2001, we said, “Whether you cruise or race, one of the many pleasures of boating is the ‘quiet little drink’” which is why we created the unique AAS In the Drink column.

A lot has happened since, but the pleasure of a cockpit sundowner when gently sailing in the evening breeze or on the mooring or marina remains one of boating life’s great social pleasures. The run ashore after a Channel passage makes even a wet and bumpy crossing more than worthwhile.

This is a pleasure some would like to restrict and we have to actively guard it carefully, by sensible seamanlike behaviour and by strongly retaliating against regulatory zealots.

On this front, we must thank and support the RYA which over the last few years has lobbied hard on our behalf to resist new legislation, by successfully arguing it is fundamentally unworkable with any degree of fairness. While neither they nor any sensible yacht skipper would condone being drunk in charge of any water craft, they have argued that there is no evidence that legislation is required or benefi cial. Well done, the RYA.

Regulatory zealots have a tendency not to go away, so we must stay vigilant and most of all we must avoid even one case study that they could be cited as a reason for imposing their will on our freedom.Good behaviour and drinking etiquette aboard and ashore is important, so as our friends at Wight Vodka say, “tack and gybe responsibly”.
