GARDENERS MAILBAGblackish-brown if they get any sunlight at all.
Choose another plant if you replant there. Dear Neil: Id like to
get rid of pampasgrass roots that are in my yard. The top is gone,
but Im sure it will come back next year. Thats probably not the
best way to solve your problem. Any chemical you put into the soil
to kill grass roots will probably do damage to other desirable
plants for some months to come. You have two better options. If
youre going to be planting shrubs, groundcovers, owers or even turf
there come spring, you could actually rototill the area and rake
out the roots. Option two would be to wait until spring, then spray
the regrowth with Round Up or some other glyphosate herbicide. They
kill grasses very effectively. One of those actually would have
been your easiest route initially. Dear Neil: How can I get
honeysuckle vines out of an azalea bed? Honeysuckle plants start
growing, then send out long branches in all directions. You may see
vines in several of your azaleas, and, on closer inspection, they
may all come from one root system. Trace the stems back to the
ground, then handdig each plant that you nd. Youll need to clip
each honeysuckle vine by hand, then remove it from the azalea
branch carefully. You cant pull the honeysuckle off the azalea
without doing damage to your shrubs. Dear Neil: Were putting in a
swimming pool next spring, and there is a Bradford pear in its
place currently. The tree is about ve years old. Can we move it
successfully? You probably could, but it would probably take power
equipment. If its trunk is more than 3 inches in diameter, its soil
ball will be quite heavy. In all candor, Bradford pears also have a
major branching problem that shortens their useful life in our
landscapes. Their branch angles are quite narrow and weak, subject
to breaking after 8 or 10 years. The point is, you would probably
be better served with another type of tree. Little Gem or Teddy
Bear magnolias are very desirable. Dear Neil: I have beds of
violets I would like to transplant. When is the best time to do so?
Late fall is best, but not all is lost now, either. Moving them at
the end of the winter (February) would sacrice some of that years
owers, but the plants would take off quickly and reestablish
immediately. Dear Neil: I have a giant pothos on a pole. Ive had it
for several years, and now the leaves arent so giant after all.
What did I do wrong? Those smaller leaves are probably on stems
that have reached the top of the pole and that are now drooping
downward. The huge leaves of giant-leafed pothos, or devils ivy,
are actually the adult foliage. The smaller leaves are juvenile
growth, and the plant will always produce them when its stems are
not ascending a support. By the same token, split leaf philodendron
(the vining type) only develops the holes in its leaves when its
stems are climbing. If its allowed to trail and hang downward, the
leaves develop full and, to use a botanical term, entire (no
holes). Trim the hanging growth off your plant. Root it, if you
wish, and start it growing up a new pole. Dear Neil: What are the
best plants to draw birds to our landscape?
BY NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: I was given a Christmas cactus as a gift. How do I
care for it once it nishes blooming? Keep it bright and
comparatively warm (between 60 and 90 degrees). Theyre native to
tropical rain forests, where they grow suspended from tree trunks.
It rains incredible amounts, but the water drains away quickly.
That tells you that youll need a very porous potting soil.
Dear Neil: Enclosed are leaves from Nellie R. Stevens hollies
planted late last spring. Their bed is in partial shade. My aucubas
leaves are also enclosed. Does it have the same problem? Neither
plant has grown. Should I give up on them? The holly leaves look
like you let the plant get too dry at least once. Its the perfect
plant for a site like you described. You probably need to replant,
then be very attentive to its water needs. No insect or disease is
involved. The aucuba may also have gotten too dry, but it may also
have gotten too much sunlight. Hollies are great in all conditions,
from full sun to fairly heavy shade, but aucubas will turn
Consider what birds look for in plantsfood, a place to build
nests and safety. The best fruit-producing plants would include
pyracanthas, hollies (especially yaupon and possumhaw), the various
privets and mahonias. Dense, tightly branched plants will provide
the best nest-building sites as well as good security and privacy.
Truth is, you could probably attract many more birds, and more
types as well, with feeders scattered over your yard. Most types of
songbirds love the small black oil-type sunower seeds. Hang several
feeders some distance apart for maximum bird activity in your
garden. Have a question youd like Neil to consider? Mail it to him
in care of the Wise County Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX
76234 or email him at [email protected]. Neil regrets that
he cannot reply to questions individually.

MOMMY, MY THROAT HURTSStrep throat is a contagious disease
caused by infection with streptococcal bacteria. The symptoms
include fever, pain, redness, and swelling of the throat. It is
more widespread during the school year when a large number of
children occupy an enclosed space. The bacteria are present in the
nose and throat, so normal activities such as sneezing, coughing,
or shaking hands can spread the infection to other people. The
infection can also be acquired by touching objects such as books,
tables, or other hard surfaces that were handled by an infected
person. Most cases of a sore throat are caused by a virus and are
not strep throat. The viral sore throat improves on its own without
any treatment. If you would like further information on todays
topic, contact LOVETTE PEDIATRICS at (940) 627-8044. Come in and
discuss your concerns with our doctor, a Board Certified
Pediatrician. We can be an important source of care, information,
and support for you and your children. Were conveniently located at

FEWER WOMEN HAVING CHILDRENAccording to a recent Census Bureau
report, more women in their early 40s are childless. In addition,
women who are having children are having fewer than ever before.
According to the latest statistics, during the past three decades,
the number of women aged 40-44 with no children has doubled, from
10% to 20%. In addition, those who are mothers have an average of
1.9 children each, which is more than one child fewer than women of
the same age in 1976. According to the survey of 76 million women,
those with graduate/professional degrees recorded the most births
of all educational levels. About 36% of women who gave birth in the
previous 12 months were separated, divorced, widowed, or unmarried.
At our practice we provide gynecological care for women at all

and after the holidays is an important part of being healthy. A key
way to help your children become healthy adults is to encourage an
active lifestyle. Children in the United States today are less t
than they were a generation ago, and physical inactivity has become
a serious problem. So, what can parents do to help increase the
entire familys tness level? First and foremost, parents can
FOR
CONSUMERSold and older should get 60 minutes of moderate to
vigorous exercise on most, and preferably all, days of the week,
with adolescents and adults getting at least 30 minutes. As winter
approaches, here are some helpful ways to increase your familys
physical activity time: Establish a weekly Dance-A-Thon night,
dancing to a variety of favorite music from various eras. Work
together in a family garden. Put up and take down holiday
decorations outside as a family. Being active is a crucial element
of health for all ages. So this year, resolve to take small steps
to help your family make behavior changes that will keep them
moving toward better health in the coming year.

be good role models. If children do not see the adults in their
lives taking interest in hobbies and participating in activities
that promote continuous movement for 30 to 60 minutes a day, they
are less likely to adopt active lifestyles. Decreasing screen time
for families during the holidays is another way parents can
increase the family tness level. According to the American Academy
of Pediatrics, the average child watches about three hours of
television a day. Choosing to turn off the television or computer
and taking an outdoor family walk to see neighborhood holiday
decorations or just dancing around in the family
room to favorite music are two ways to keep the family moving.
Take every opportunity to establish good viewing habits and ensure
that children have no more than two hours of television and video
time per day, as recommended by the AAP. Parents should also
encourage their kids to do a variety of activities. For DAVIS
children, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids
exercise in gym class, walking or playing fetch with the dog, or
even playing tag inand outdoors. According to the 2005 dietary
guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the

Extension Service, a part of the Texas A&M System. Winter is
upon us, and it is time to start getting ready for those cold
nights and days. It is very important that you have the proper
shelter for your animal. Your project will need somewhere to keep
warm and dry and a place where he/she can bed down for the night on
a dry area. Pigs are very susceptible to getting sick. The idea
shelter for your hogs would be a covered box with hay or pine
shavings as well as heat lamps. Sheep should always have a blanket
on no matter what, but during the colder days, make sure they have
some wool that can keep them warm. You should leave the wool on
them about 1 to 1/2 long; that will provide some warmth to the
lambs. Rabbits, chickens and all other livestock should be kept as
warm as possible. If you are not ofcially enrolled in Wise County
4-H by Dec. 30, you will not be able to participate in the Wise
County Youth Fair as a 4-H member. We advise all members who turned
in a green enrollment sheet to doublecheck with the 4-H ofce to see
if they are on the ofcial member list before the December deadline
to prevent any unfortunate mistakes. Wise County Youth Fair Tag-In
will be Jan. 3, 2009, for all sheep, goats, hogs and non-registered
beef heifers.

TEXAS HEALTH MATTERSWild game is flavorful, but requires safety
stepsaccording to centuries-old recipes. But while our frontier
ancestors may have perfected the cooking of game animals, todays
chefs know a lot more about safe preparation. Thats crucial when
cooking animals that have been shot and eld-dressed in the wild and
arent subject to ofcial inspections. The two most common health
concerns raised by game consumption are exposure to salmonella and
E. coli bacteria. Bacterial disease threats include kidney failure
among the very young, hemorrhagic colitis and a blood-clotting
disorder called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. These dangers
can be greatly reduced, however, by following some basic rules that
protect your familys health while also improving the avor and
tenderness of wild game. Field dressing and storage The rst steps

TEXAS HEALTH MATTERScooler to prevent bacterial growth. When
refrigeration isnt possible, hang the bird carcasses to allow air
circulation. Before you cook The meat of birds and mammals tends to
be very lean, so many prep techniques youd use for, say, beef
tenderloin or farmraised turkey also work well for game. For
example, brining (pre-soaking in salty water for as long as four
days) adds avor and improves moisture by salinating muscle tissue
and causing it to absorb water from the brine. In addition, many
cooks swear by the results of pre-marinating game in a mixture of
olive oil, white wine, black pepper, salt and herbs. Other
techniques that deliver juicier texture and richer taste include
larding the meat with bacon, injecting seasoned broth with a
special meat syringe and quick-searing venison cutlets or the
breast meat of turkeys and other game birds before roasting in the
oven. Getting down to business When cooking wild birds and animals,
use your imagination or any recipes you may have for rich-tasting
lean cuts of meat. In general, venison goes well with avors such as
black pepper, red wine, rich fruits such as g, or smoky sauces made
from meat juice reductions. Wild hog should be treated as what it
is: unusually lean and intense-avored pork. Slow cooking in a
smoker is one favored technique. For a truly old-school experience,
baste the meat in oil, salt, pepper and herbs, then cook it in a
pit full of coals (see link below), covered tightly in several
layers of heavy foil. Game birds can be used in most recipes for

not to let intestinal contents touch edible meat. If contact is

possible; its a major source of the gamey avor disliked by many.
After eld dressing the animal, hang the carcass to drain blood, and
be sure to cool the meat as soon as possible after the kill.
Venison can keep for a day or two at temperatures as high as 50

SAVVY SENIORBY JIM MILLER Dear Savvy Senior, Where can a person
turn for low-cost medical, dental and eye care? Im 62 years old,
recently uninsured and living on a tight budget. Cant Wait for
Medicare Dear Cant, There are actually a wide range of programs and
services that provide free or low-cost medical care to help those
that are uninsured, underinsured or low income. Heres where to
look. Medical care Health centers: Federally-funded by the Health
Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), there are thousands
of health centers around the U.S. that provide low-cost health care
to people based on nancial need. You pay what you can afford, based
on your income. Go to www.ndahealthcenter.hrsa.gov or call
888-2754772. Hill-Burton facilities: There are around 200
HillBurton health care facilities around the country that offer
free or reduced-cost health care to those who cant afford to pay.
To locate a facility or to see if you qualify, visit
www.hrsa.gov/hillburton or call 800-638-0742 (800-492-0359 for
Maryland residents). Free clinics: These are privately funded,
non-prot, community-based clinics that typically provide care for
common illnesses and injuries to those in need, at little or no
cost. There are around 1,000 free clinics nationwide. To locate one
in your area, call your local hospital or visit
www.freemedicalcamps.com. Indian Health Service (IHS): An agency

states. See www.ihs.gov. Remote Area Medical: A non-prot,

care to uninsured or underinsured people in remote areas of
Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia but may be expanding to other
states in the future. www.ramusa.org, 865-579-1530. Eye care To
locate free or discounted eye care or eye glasses programs in your
area, your best resource is your local Lions Club. Call 800-7474448
to get the number to your state Lions Club ofce, which can refer
you to your community representative, or visit www.lionsclubs.org.
There are also a variety of national eye care programs that can
help you too including: EyeCare America (www. eyecareamerica.org;

no out-of-pocket expense. Vision USA (www.aoa. org; 800-766-4466)

chicken or turkey. Roasting, smoking and quick-sauteeing tend to
yield better results than batter-frying or use in soups. Dove
breast, however, can be excellent when stewed slowly in chicken
stock, red wine, herbs and vegetables. Finally, if youre planning a
non-traditional holiday menu, look to ethnic cookbooks that feature
the meat you have at hand. Asian cookbooks, for example, have many
recipes calling for duck or barbecued lean pork. Cooking food from
the wild lets you turn out holiday meals that combine the feel of
ancient tradition with intriguing avors your family may not have
experienced before. If youre game to challenge your creativity,
