These ten causes account for 88.2% of all deaths in this age group.

Age <1 Year

• Deaths of infants under one year of age are called infant mortality and are an important indicator ofthe health of a population. Infant mortality is usually presented as a rate per 1,000 live births, butis presented here as rate per 100,000 so the rates will be of comparable magnitude as the deathrates in other age groups.

• Birth defects, conditions arising in the perinatal period, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)are the leading causes of death, responsible for 84% of all deaths in this age group.

Age <1 Year

• Over the ten-year period, 1986 - 1995, thedeath rate for children under the age of oneyear, also referred to as the infant mortalityrate, declined for boys and girls.

• Death rates declined for the three mostimportant causes of infant mortality.

• Infant mortality rates differed substantiallyby local health district, but for most, theconfidence limits were wide so that most ofthe observed variation is a result of randomvariability.

Methods:

Death rates were calculated using Utah’s death certificate database provided by the Bureau of VitalRecords. The underlying cause of death was used for all rate calculations. Rates for local healthdistricts were compared to the overall state rate using 95% confidence limits. District rates wereconsidered statistically different from the state rate if the 95% confidence limit for the district rate didnot include the state rate. District rates that differ from the state rate but were not statisticallysignificant by this test may still be importantly different, but those differences may also be due torandom year-to-year variation of small numbers of deaths. Additional tables containing the numbersand rates of death due to the causes examined here are available for each local health district uponrequest.
