General Information

The first recordedOlympic Gameswas held in Olympia,Greece in the year776 BC.


Like today, the Games were held every4 years but only in Olympia, Greece.

Now the Games are held in a differentcountry around the world each time.


Today, in addition to the Summer Olympics,the Winter Olympics are held two yearsafter the summer Games.


A torch symbolises the AncientOlympics and is carried aroundthe host country of the Games.


The Olympic Flag wasdesigned by Pierre deCoubertin in 1914.

Pierre de Coubertinwas the founderof the modernOlympic Movement.

Equestrian

Chariot races and otherhorse races were verypopular and included inthe Games.

Modern Olympic horseevents include showjumping and dressage,but no chariot races!


Boxing

Boxing took place in anopen space and thecompetitors wore stripsof leather tied aroundtheir hands.


Boxing takes place ina ring and boxers wearspecial gloves.


Pentathlon

The pentathlon consistedof discus, javelin, longjump, running andwrestling.


The modern pentathlonconsists of pistol shooting,fencing, swimming, showjumping and a cross-country run.


Running Events

There were three mainevents of differentdistances. Athletes ranin bare feet and woreno clothes.


Today, track runners usespecial shoes that havespikes to help them grip.


Long Jump

The long jump was partof the Pentathlon event.Athletes held stoneweights to help themjump further.


These days the longjump is a separate event.Athletes no longer useweights.


Competitors

Only men could competein the Games and nowomen were allowed towatch.


Both men and womentake part but they don’tcompete against eachother.


Paralympic GamesToday the Olympic Games isfollowed by the Paralympicswhere athletes with physicaldisabilities compete.


Winners

Winning athletes wereawarded an olive wreathto wear on their headsand an olive branch.


Winning competitors areawarded gold, silver andbronze medals for 1st,2nd and 3rd place. Theyalso receive a bouquet offlowers.
