All about Jen

Read the information about Jen. Have you got anything in common?

Jen is from Cambridge, England. She has got many friends there. Beth is her best friend, but Jen is also friends with Sheraf and Lucy. Sheraf is from India and Lucy is from China. She also chats on the internet with Joe, an American. He lives in Boston.

Jen plays violin and she likes playing in the school orchestra. She likes school because she sees her friends there, but she does not like most of her school subjects. The only subjects she really likes are music and art. Math and science are difficult for her, and she does not like to write.

Two years ago, Jen went to Spain for the summer holidays. It was the best holiday ever, but this summer her family did not go on holiday because there was too much to do. Her mother got married and they moved to Newcastle.

Everything has changed for Jen. Now she lives in a new city far away from Cambridge. She has a step-father and a step-brother. She is going to start at a new school, and she does not know anyone there. The only good thing about Newcastle is that now Jen has her own room in the new flat. She used to have to share a room with her sister, which was not very nice because her sister has a pet snake.

Jen had a going away party before she left Newcastle. She sends text messages every day to her best friend, Beth, but she misses her a lot.

All about Joe

Joe is from Boston in the United States. There are four kids in his family, and he is the oldest. His best friend is Jason, and they are on many sports teams at school: basketball and baseball are their favorites. They often play basketball on the weekends at Joe’s house.

Joe plays piano, but he does not like it. He hates practicing! He is good at school and he likes it, but this year everything has changed because he has started at a new school. Joe is a very good writer. In fact, he even won third place in a writing contest last year. He wrote a story about two kids who get caught in a computer game.

Joe usually goes to summer camp every year. He likes sports camps and outdoor camps the most. He also goes to Florida every year to visit his grandparents.

Joe’s family lives in a big, old house and he has got his own room. Joe has trained his dog, Rugger, so he can do lots of tricks. Joe has to feed Rugger and take him for walks every day.

�� This is Beth. She went to Camp Wannabe with Lucy. Beth is Jen’s

best friend, but Jen could not go to the camp because she went to Spain for her summer holiday.

�� This is Ian and Anne. They are from Ireland. They did not know one another before Camp Wannabe.

�� This is Kim. She is from Australia. She has been to England often because her auntie lives there, but Camp Wannabe was her first summer camp. Of course summertime in England is wintertime in Australia, so she went to the camp during her semester holidays.

�� This is Lucy. She goes to school with Jen and Beth. Lucy is from China and she is learning English. She had a lot of fun at Camp Wannabe and she was happy to be there with Beth.

�� This is Seth. He is an African American. He loved Camp Wannabe and he is glad he went. He plays soccer in his school soccer team, so he was happy to find people who liked to play the game.

�� This is Tomas. He has brown hair. He is from Poland and he had a great time at Camp Wannabe. He played a lot of football with Seth, who is American. His English also got much better.



Time to go home Everyone had a great time at Camp Wannabe. They were there for

two weeks, so they made many new friends. They were sad to go. On the last day, Seth said, “I’ve got an idea! We can meet on the

internet!” “That’s a great idea!” said Tomas. “I’ll find a chatroom for us and then I’ll send you an e-mail. We can

meet there,” said Seth. “That will be fun!” said Beth. Everyone gave Seth their e-mail addresses. Ian gave Anne his

telephone number. She promised to call him when the chatroom was ready.

Wannabe campers’ chatroom Anne When did you come to England? Lucy When I was 4 years old. First we lived in London.

Then we moved to Cambridge. Anne When? Lucy Two years ago. Anne Do you like living in England? Lucy Yes. But I miss my grandparents. They’re in

China. Anne Why did you come to England? Lucy My uncle lives here. My father wanted to be with

him. Anne Do you speak Chinese? Lucy Yes. We speak Chinese at home. And I go to

Chinese school at the weekend. Anne What do you do there? Lucy I am learning to read and write in Chinese. Anne That must be hard! Lucy Yes, there are lots of things to learn. It’s very

different from English.



Wannabe campers’ chatroom Seth Hey Anne, have you ever seen the Loch Ness

monster? Anne No, I haven’t. Tomas What’s a Loch Ness monster? Anne People believe it’s a monster that lives in Loch

Ness in Scotland. Tomas Has anyone seen it? Anne Some people say they have, but I don’t believe

them. And Seth, I’m from Ireland. I’ve never been to Scotland!

Seth Oh. Sorry. Tomas Have you ever seen a leprechaun? Seth Leprechauns aren’t real. Everybody knows that! Anne Yes, they are! We call them the little people. I’ve

seen them! And I’m sure Ian has, too! Seth No, you haven’t! I don’t believe you. Lucy Have you really seen them? Anne Yes, in the forest. They’re everywhere in Ireland! Kim Have you ever heard of a Yowie? Beth No, I haven’t. What’s a Yowie?!? Kim It’s half human and half ape. It’s really big. People

have seen it in the forests in Australia. Seth Is it the same thing as Big Foot? Kim Maybe. I don’t know. Anne Have you ever seen one? Kim No. But people always try to find it. Beth I don’t believe these stories. Tomas I don’t either.



Wannabe campers’ chatroom Anne Where have you been, Seth? Seth I got in trouble for fighting with a kid at school. He

was bullying another kid and I got mad and hit him. I couldn’t play soccer or use the internet for two weeks!

Anne Wow. Your mum was really mad! I was grounded two months ago. My teacher caught me cheating on a test and told my mum.

Seth You cheated?! People who cheat in my class are called dummies!

Anne I know, it was stupid – the answers I cheated on were wrong anyway!

Tomas Cheating isn’t so bad. Everyone does it. Seth Everyone? But it’s BAD! I think it’s worse than

getting in a fight! Tomas But isn’t it bad not to help a friend? Seth Cheating isn’t helping. Don’t you get in trouble for

it? Tomas Only if the teacher catches us. Seth I still think it’s wrong. Tomas What’s new with you, Anne? Anne I’m getting ready for our school play. Tomas Really? Have you got a big role? Anne Yeah. I’ve got lots of lines to learn by heart! Tomas What’s it about? Anne It’s actually two sketches. We wrote them

ourselves. They’re about embarrassing moments. Seth My mom always embarrasses me! Tomas Mine, too! She always talks to me like I’m in

kindergarten! Anne I know what you mean. Parents can be so

embarrassing!
