Alkynes

• Alkynes- Hydrocarbons that have a triple bond between two carbon atoms

• Have the general formula CnH2n-2

• The molecular geometry around the C to C triple bond in an alkyne is linear. Thus, the bond angle around a triple bond is 180°

• Triple bonds are made up of one sigma bond and two pi bonds. The sigma bond is the overlapping of the s orbitals of the two atoms, while the pi bonds are the overlapping of the two p orbitals.

• A triple bond can only contain one sigma bond because there is only one s orbital in each atom.

• Unlike C-C single bonds, C-C triple bonds do not rotate freely, because the two pi bonds are not in between the two nuclei.

• Alkynes are also known as acetylenes, because ethyne (C2H2) is also called acetylene.

Conclusion

• The main characteristic of alkynes is their Carbon to Carbon triple bond. This bond is linear and includes one sigma and two pi bonds.

Do you know any chemistry jokes?-Yeah, I know alkynes of them!
