Alibaug, once the home of one ofShivaji’s bravest admiralKanhoji Angre, is now the chi-chi address of celebrities whowant to escape corporate warfare.According to the Bombay Gazette,Alibaug was never an important town— till Angre came along and made itan important Maratha base. Tillthen, it was known for its gardensand wells built by a wealthy Muslimtrader called Ali, hence the nameAlibaug. As it embraced by sea fromthree sides, it is also referred to as"Goa of Maharashtra".
Landmarks along the route are the tombs ofMohanGiri and Balgiri, Nagoba Rest,Jambhali Plateau, God's stair, andGaymandi.
2 Varsoli Beach

Versoli is situated on the outskirts ofAlibaug, about 2 km to the north of AlibaugBeach. It’s a lovely walk through green lanesto Versoli. From the beach, you can see theKolaba Fort and also two other smaller forts— Khanderi and Underi. Both these fortswere built in the late 17th century. You canhire a local boat from Kihim or Thal to visitthese forts.
3 Alibag Fort

An island during the high waters,the 17th-century Alibag Fort isaccessible by foot when the tide islow. In its heyday, the fort had a five-storey palace, apparently built by ayounger relative, Raghoji Angre, in the18th century. The geo-magneticobservatory, built in 1905, is a gooddigression from history. Theconstruction of the fort was started byShivaji in the 1680s.
The entire edifice is 900 ft long, 350 ft wideand has 25-foot-high walls with 17 bastions.The fort has many shrines, the mostimportant being the 18th-century templeGanesh Panchayatan. Next to it is a sweetwater well that must have been an assetduring sieges. From the black sandsof Alibaug to the white sands ofKashid, this part of the western coastof India has plenty of beaches. 4 Alibag beach

The main beach of the town, it is a flatstretch that is reasonably clean and has thincrowds during the week. The sand has ahard texture and is a shade black. The waterrushes against the concrete embankmentthat separates the sea and the many thelasof nariyal pani, bhel puri and kulfi. As thewater begins to recede, the embankmentreveals its stairs looking out to the oceanand the spread of black sand beneath. Inthe evening, horse-driven buggies offerrides, and the vendors move across theembankment to sell their stuff on the beach.
