lgodon Wine EstatesWhen CNN/Money Magazine recently selected four of the best destinations in the world for retirement, three of the cities were in the United States and one was located in a picturesque corner of Argentine wine country: San Rafael, Mendoza.

Could there have been a better validation for the US-based investor group that chose to call San Rafael home four years ago? They arrived in 2007 with the vision of living the winemaker’s dream. Today, that dream is becoming a reality...

FROM THE MANSION TO MENDOZA

Since opening in Recoleta last year, the Algodon Mansion has quickly established itself as one of the premier hotels in Buenos Aires. Accolades have come fast and frequently from the international travel press including Travel+Leisure’s 2011 “It List” and the 2011 Condé Nast Hot List.

With business firmly established in Buenos Aires, the New York developers behind the Algodon brand have set their sights on San Rafael, Mendoza for their next major development which is certain to appeal to foreign investors contemplating private vineyard ownership in Argentina.

A FIRST TASTE OF SAN RAFAEL

I first visited Algodon Wine Estates in the fall (April) and fell in love with the project, the location, the natural beauty at the base of the Sierra Pintadas and of course, the wine. Some of the vines at Algodon Wine Estates date back to 1946, and I had the pleasure of dining with Algodon’s Senior Wine Advisor, Mr. Anthony Foster (pictured).

While all of the Algodon Wines tasted were superb, one of the real surprises was the Bonarda. On InvestBA, we have chronicled the meteoric rise in popularity of Argentine Bonarda, and it seems Argentina’s second-most produced red may have found the perfect home in San Rafael.

Bonarda grapes need hot weather, plenty of sunshine over the cluster, low yield and adequate ripening conditions. San Rafael offers all of these qualities plus two nourishing rivers supplying glacial runoff from the snow-capped Andes.

On the second day, Mr. Foster gave us a guided tour of the Algodon winery which produces several award-winning Malbecs, Bonardas, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Pinot Noirs and a unique Cabernet/Syrah blend. He was enthusiastic about the quality of the 2011 Harvest, as well as the progress of the 2010 varietals.

SLEEPING SOUNDLY IN MALBEC

The Lodge at Algodon Wine Estates offers five-star accommodations and 10 very spacious, well appointed rooms each named after a different varietal. My room, Malbec, was located in the Wine & Golf Lodge which features a cozy gallery with two fireplaces, large sofas and an honor bar stocked with fine scotch and bourbon.

The warm mix of colors and textures in the Wine & Golf Lodge stands in sharp contrast to the more formal black-and-white of the Algodon Mansion, the Wine Estates’ big city cousin. Like the Mansion, the Lodge is no stranger to accolades having already picked up the 2010 Wine Tourism Award for “Best International Accommodations” from Great Wine Capitals.

The rooms feature beautiful King-size beds with enormous headboards, sitting areas with stoves, custom cabinetry and private terraces for relaxing outdoors after a round of golf or horseback riding. Attention to detail is evident from the antique mates on the desk to the Algodon milled soaps.

LIVING THE DREAM

The long weekend at Algodon Wine Estates offered the perfect elixir of relaxation, fine wine, natural beauty and even a round of golf amid half-century-old vineyards. Two emotions defined the return flight to BA on Monday: sadness over leaving mixed with elation over discovering a hidden gem only a few knew about…until now.

Earlier this year CNN Money chose San Rafael as one of 4 Great Places to Retire. The Fortune blog described the city with a population of 173,000 as being very affordable with “plenty of amenities,” and “the feel of a small European town.”

CNN Money says San Rafael’s charms are beginning to lure expats from the U.S., Canada and Europe in search of a unique retirement destination where those with an active lifestyle and an entrepreneurial spirit are finding “un paraíso argentino.”

A New Bottle for Argentine MalbecVeralia Argentina, a global glass manufacturer with offices in Mendoza, is rolling out three distinctive bottles that will carry the stamp “Malbec Argentina.” The company has been working on the initiative for three years and believes it will help Argentine Malbecs easier to identify in foreign grocery and liquor stores, according to Los Andes’ Miguel Angel Flores. This could prove especially true in the United States where most retailers tend to group Argentine wines under a catch-all category like “South American wines.” The new bottles are part of the Ecova line which Veralia introduced in 2009 and come in three different sizes to indicate the individual wine’s quality : Maipo (premium), Cuyo (super premium) and Icono (self explanatory).

DeNiro, Bono Investing In MendozaPairing is everything when it comes to fine wine and cuisine, and the pairing of the world’s greatest living actor with one of the world’s best wine producing regions would be “a maridaje increíble.” According to Los Andes, Robert De Niro may soon join the list of celebrities investing in Mendoza vines. The legendary actor is interested in purchasing an approximately 100-acre vineyard in Mendoza. While the deal has not closed, the paper says negotiations for a Mendoza vineyard are fairly advanced. Earlier this year U2 lead singer Bono was spotted in Mendoza shopping for his own private vineyard. Sources say the tentative name for Bobby D’s Argentine wine is fittingly Rodrigo Mendoza, the same name of the character he played opposite Jeremy Irons in the 1986 film, The Mission.
