The Day the Sky Rained ! ! ! ! ! Bombs

Page 2: alexander01pd2018 Korean War

The Day the Sky Rained Bombs BOOM! The sound of the American Tanks were deafening. A

clatter of gunfire followed. The Americans were slowly climbing up the hill. We had to hold back the attackers. Hundreds of tanks

streamed up the hill. The battle seemed hopeless for us.! “CHARGES SET!”. I was snapping back into the battle. Fear overcame me. We were all dead men. ! “No. I had a squad to lead.” I whispered, “There might still be a chance of victory.” ! My radio came to life.! “Caption, this is Command Center. An Airship was deployed to get you out of there. Get your men ready for evacuation. Be advised, do not fire on the incoming chopper, I repeat-” My radio cracked as a huge explosion blew us all off of our feet. ! Scrambling away, I realized the first Americans already were on the hill.! “FALL BACK!” I barked, “BACK ON YOUR FEET SOLDIERS! WE ARE LEAVING!”! Another burst of gun fire slammed into our squad, as screams rang out. Two Chinese soldiers tumbled, and fell to the ground. I now had under 20 remaining men left. A cold fear clung to my stomach. I knew we wouldn't make it out of here alive.! “CAPTION, YOUR GOING TO GET LEFT BEHIND! MOVE IT!” yelled the solider Yao. “Take Solider Yun, Kiao, Feng and Jian to the artillery. The fortified position provides great cover. We’ll keep these ones off your back.”! “Move out men!” I hollered, already starting to scale the peak of the hill.! The muddy ground slugged over our feet, thickening, making it almost impossible to climb the steep hill. Sweat formed on my head. I was faintly aware of the fight behind me. Another scream rang out. Below us, only five men remained, holding off over 300. I had to help them.

! The sky above turned yellow, with thick grey clouds, reflecting the mood of the battle. Planting my hand on the top of the hill, I pulled myself up, also helping the other climbing soldiers. ! One scrambling solider slipped and slammed against the stone below, and lay unmoving as a burst of gunfire pieced his body. A huge explosion echoed. I had a bad feeling there would be no survivors below. ! “Requesting permission to fire the Ordnance QF 25 pounder, Sir!” requested, Feng.! “Permission granted.” I responded. ! The 3 remaining soldiers made there way to the towering artillery in front of us. The Ordnance QF 25 pounder was a weapon capable of mass destruction, armed with a heavy machine gun along with an 8 inch cannon.! “FIRE!” ! A speeding shell was launched out of the Pounder and crashed into the Americans, followed by a massive explosion. The screams below indicated it was a direct hit. Below us, the Americans scattered for cover, but many of their bodies were already scattered in the dirt.! “FIRE!” !! Another volley smashed into the ground, just as the Americans started to recover from the initial blast. Deafened by the terrible explosion, they ran around, confused, unable to regroup or return fire. ! “INCOMING!”! A swift jet cut though the sky. On the side of the plane, were two unpleasantly large missile. Detaching from the plane, the missiles zipped though the air once they had pinpointed our location. ! “BRACE YOURSELF!” I yelled, as the missiles crashed into Pounder.

! The hill around me exploded. Dirt flew everywhere as red hot flames erupted around me. A wall of pain suddenly slammed into my head. I fell on the ground, almost drowning in pain. I touched my hand to my head, feeling the cool feeling of flowing blood dripping over my hand. A shard of the destroyed Pounder had impaled itself into my head. I forced myself to pry my eyes open. Pain clouded my vision. The front of me, the ruins of the Pounder were everywhere. My vision blurred again and I faintly saw the 3 other soldiers. Raising their guns, they fired at the Americans that had already climbed the steep hill. 2 Americans spun around, their bodies injected with bullets.! Cutting though the sky, another American warplane flashed by, scattering bombs all around me. The crack as the bomb shells splitting apart, followed by many screams could be heard from far away.! Once the dust had cleared, I realized how grim the situation was. One of the Chinese soldier’s broken body lay on the ground. There are no doubt he was dead. Sprawled on the ground beside me, another solider lay, groaning silently. The third one was on his knees, struggling to even stand and lift his gun. Everyone one was about to die, and I could do nothing about it.! “No I must help!” I whispered silently to myself.! A surge of emotions coursed though my body, first fear then anger. I couldn't let everyone down. I tested my legs. Staggering to my feet, I tried make my legs support the weight of my body.! Just as I started to stand up, I felt a blinding pain in my leg. A bullet pieced deep into my body. I collapsed on the ground, clawing at my leg. Scarlet blood pooled up on the ground around me. The intense pain glued me to the ground. I glanced up. Before me, stood an American, his gun in hand, waiting to finish me off with a quick shot in the head.! Suddenly, the American groaned and fell backwards with a nasty bullet wound on his head. I turned and glanced up and saw Solider Feng, whom was standing next to me, a gun in hand,

Page 5: alexander01pd2018 Korean War

shaking heavily. He fell back on the ground, wounded and unconscious. Despite the pain, I crawled over to him and grabbed his hand. We were getting out of here.! The Americans were slowly advanced up the hill, planting mines and throwing smoke bombs. They seemed to be taking their time. I took a deep breathe, and began to crawl away. I held onto Feng’s hand. Slowly slugging across the ground, I dragged him across the dusty ground. After crawling around 150 meters, Feng regained conciseness. Pulling himself together, he began to slowly crawl himself, saving me from dragging a dead weight around. I had no idea where I was going.! Around 400 meters of backbreaking crawling, Feng was able to start standing.

! “We’re here.” he gasped, tired from the effort of standing.! “Where?” I questioned, suddenly realizing how hard it was to talk.! “The Chinese have sent a plane with medics on it.” he exclaimed, “They should be here any moment.”! “Just how would you know that?” I questioned in a suspicious tone.! Solider Feng smiled and slid his hand in his pocket, pulling up a battered piece of plastic. It was a radio! How had this radio survived all those bombings? How did he contact an airship with out me knowing? I wanted to ask tons of other questions, but I just kept my mouth shut.! A plane appeared in the air. Feng grinned. He waved his handkerchief in the air, signaling the plane. The plane flew closer and closer. Feng’s smile was replaced by one of shock. He lifted his gun in the air.! “How can it be?” he whispered, “We were so close.”! I had no idea why Feng would so surprised. Then I saw the incoming plane clearly. My heart skipped a beat. The plane had a USA flag on it.

Page 6: alexander01pd2018 Korean War

! This plane was coming to finish us off. I groaned. We came so far just to die? I closed my eyes, waiting for death. A huge explosion shook the whole hill. I opened my eyes as a missile exploded against into the American jet. ! Spinning around, the jet went down. Rising down from the clouds, was the Chinese plane they were waiting for, rapidly hurling missile after missile at the downed American plane. The Chinese plane touched the ground as 30 Chinese soldiers came out, fully armed. ! 2 rollers arrived. As I was being lifted on the plane, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the sky filled with Chinese airships, dropping bomb at the Americans. Thousands of Chinese troops dropped from the planes, overwhelming the approaching Americans with bombs and bullets. I smiled to myself. I had held the hill long enough for my allies to arrive. I started to black out. My final thought, was that I had survived.

Interview of my grandpa:Was there any battles that you remember that you battled in?I remember the battle of old old baldy. Fighting for China. What are the main events that lasted in that battle? He was manning artillery and when the caption of the group went down, he rushed down to try to save the caption. Shortly after, the artillery station that my grandpa was manning got blown up and China lost the last of their six artillery. Is there any thing you remember that is important? Yes, when the caption when down, I rushed down to help him but a piece of bomb hit me on the head and I fell down a hill. Then someone shot me in the leg. What were you feeling at this point. I was in a lot of pain not only from the shot, but a part of a bomb smashing into my head. I was also really scared because the chinese was falling back, and no one bother to pick either me or the other solider up. If the enemy reached us, we would be dead for sure. After that what happened?I started to crawl back and reached the medical tents. Had to crawl over 500 meters to reach the medical planes! I lived and survived the battle.

Family Tree:

Reflection of my story:I hoped you liked my story I wrote about my grandpa. Things I think I did well in this story is to make it come alive, you sort of feel like you are in the story. Another thing I did well is using word choice. I change dead words like good or bad into something more descriptive. Things I think I need to work on are not using the same word over and over again. Sometimes in my story I use the same words to describe the gunfire and explosions. I also think that I should work on is conventions. Every once in a while in my story I mess up on my dialog. I also have a few run on sentences in my story. Doing a project like this is very important because it tests your writing skills, but also it helps you learn more about your family members. This project helped me with my family because I learned many things about my grandpa that I never knew. The part I enjoyed most about this project was the writing. Advice I would give to students that do this project is not to do a careless interview. A careless interview will leave you with no details to put in your story.
