A Little BackgroundMacedonian, born in 356 bce - died 323 bce (age 32). Son of King Philip II. Had a prestigious reputation by the age of 13. We will examine his “Greatness” by looking at 3 definitions of greatness.

Great = AccomplishmentsHistory = Deeds of great men. Bad: 1/2 of history is filled with women. Many historical events take place that no one can take responsibility for. (Black Death) Alexander did do a lot though!

Alexander’s Feats

Destroyed the Persians, conquered entire empire. Headed towards India, stopping around the Indus R. Great general, army had superior tactics/tech (Sarissa). Conqueror, but not an empire-builder.

After his death, the empire broke into 3 kingdoms (Antigonids, Ptolemies, Seleucids).

Great = Impact, After DeathSimilar to King Tut, Alexander is super good at being dead. Military model for various generals after his death. (Napoleon) Introduced the idea of Absolutism to Greco-Roman world. Left behind spectacular cities (most named Alexandria).

Gave the region a common language (Greek). Made a much more connected world. Trade and communication more efficient.

Great = LegendNo accounts of his life written while he lived. Embellishment is a lot easier. Never grew old, never lost battles. Tutored by Aristotle. Chased the Persian King (Darius III) across Iraq and Iran.

Alexander is ‘Great’ because others decided he was. Napoleon (French), Pompey (Roman). We decide what to pay attention to and what to ignore.
