    Academic & Professional Background

  • 1290-1300 DECATUR STREET, BROOKLYN, USA (2015)

This project was presented to the DOB as a cluster filiing meaning that even though the project was four separate buildings we used the same drawings for all four. Each bulding contains 8 units, with an additional cellar space and outdoor area for the first floor units, an outdoor area for the rear apartment on the second floor, a private terrace for the top two units and a common space at the bulkhead roof.

The facade design plays with the pushing and pulling of the facade elements creating a pattern that seeks to blur the limits between buildings and display them as a single one. The facade is composed by brick, a wood cladding system and aluminium clad windows. These materials were selected to fit in the context as many of the neighboring buildings use the same.

Working on the design and zoning calculations was specially challenging as all buildings had to be the same even though the demising walls thicknesses, some facade elements and penthouse locations varied from one to the other.

269 WASHINGTON AVENUE & 238 HALL STREET, BROOKLYN, USA (2015)

These two projects are located in a 50x100 through lot, each building facing its own street and both sharing a common backyard. The lot is in a landmarked district and required the Landmarks and Preservation Commission (LPC) approval. Both buildings contain 10 units each, the first floor apartments have an additional space at the cellar and the top apartments have a penthouse room.

As per LPC requirement, the design of the facades required special attention as they had to be integrated in the context using similar materials and design elements to its neighbors such as water tables, headers and sills, shadow lines, and cornices.

Besisdes LPC approval, many aspects of these two projects were very challenging such as the zoning, the construction details, the layouts and the MEP coordination.

I specifically learned a lot working on the construction details as a waterproofing engineer consultant was hired to guide us in our work.

    SLOPE TODRAIN, TYP.

738 GRAND STREET, BROOKLYN, USA (2015)

Located in a 100 x 25 lot in East Williamsburg this project had a major challenge to overcome since the beginning. The neighbor building has an old easement to have an exterior staircase and means of egress on the clients lot. This exterior staicase goes all the way up to the rooftop of the 4 floor neighbor building and takes about 4 from the lot. This initial setting causes that each floor layout is tailored to the available space. Additionally, this situation creates a large number of variables that had a major impact on the amount of work and coordination with the consultants.

Regarding the design, the building presents a simple yet effective volumetric composition by combining metal and brick to form a big L shape seen from the old Bushwick Savings Bank lot that contains a parking space next to the lot line.

145 SPRING ST LOBBY, SOHO, NEW YORK, USA (2015)

Located at a high end residential building with apartments for rent the client seeked a design that matched the SOHO neighborhood style as well as his current and possible new clients.

The design concept is a variation of the traditional design concept of inlaying a carpet of tile on the entrance floor. In our poposal, the carpet is extended to the front wall of the lobby and the old concept is transformed into a new and more contemporary one.

Regarding lighting, at the entrance two pendants with a blackened steel finish on the outside and a silver one on the inside are installed. Also at the entrance and to emphasize the concept, a line of small soft hidden lights are installed at the ceiling where the carpet of tile ends. The same kind of lights are used to illuminate the mailbox area. The rest of the lobby is illuminated with regular downlights and sconces.

The most significant materials used in this proposal are blackened steel, stone tile and texturized wallpaper.

Altogether, the design offers a balance between modern and traditional design elements.

31 APARTMENTS IN THE CENTRE OF MALAGA (2011)

EBYAArchitectural CompetitionGROSS FLOOR AREA: 2,245 m The location and shape of the site were the main constraints in the composition and display of the buildings. Despite the crooked shape of the lots, the buildings proposed are arranged in an orthogonal array. Thus, the patios generated have different sizes but they are all regular shapes. These patios are similar to the ones found in the city floor plan and fit nicely in this conceptual pattern.

The sharp plain walls confer a solid presence to the buildings transmitting to the pedestrians and occupants a cool feeling which is suitable for such a hot place like Mlaga. Another characteristic element in the composition is the light footbridges which are used to enter the apartments. These are covered with semitransparent synthetic fabrics which subtly block the peripheral vision of the pedestrians but keep the inner space ventilated.

EBYADesign DevelopmentArchitectural Competition, 1st PrizeGROSS FLOOR AREA: 2,000 mThe building has a straightforward design that is optimal for a public facility. The design is clear, simple and rational and also includes environmental passive control strategies.

The building is rationally organized by a structural regular grid and the elevator, stairs, sanitary installations and storage areas are concentrated in a longitudinal band at the north face. The office area is a diaphanous space with natural lighting and a flexible layout which can be reorganized easily to add or subtract new offices, working areas, meeting or waiting rooms.

The environmental passive control strategies include a greenhouse in the ground floor, a double faade and solar panels in the terrace.

  • 144 APARTMENTS IN LA UVA DE HORTALEZA, SPAIN (2011)

The architectural competition demanded 144 apartments to be displayed in 4 consecutive lots with a maximum height of 8 floors. These lots were part of an old project called La Uva de Hotaleza. This project were a series of 2 floor residential buildings which were singular for their vegetation skin. At the time the project was an achievement of economical and sustainable architecture due to the effective passive environmental strategies used.

The studios new building preserves the vegetation skin in the first two floors because it was considered a characteristic feature of the neighborhood. The rest of the faade is composed by framed blinds which can be moved by the occupants.

Additionally, each tower has gardens displayed arbitrarily that connect to the interior courtyard and make each one unique.

  • NTHESIS PROJECT - ART CENTER IN GAV, SPAIN (2011)

The lot is in an industrial area next to Barcelona. However, the place is quickly changing due to the growth of the city and every year new projects are built and new necessities appear. The area is the perfect place for a program such as an Art Center because it requires large spaces and here the land cost is much cheaper than in the city.

The educational center I propose covers the whole range of possible art specialties. Also, the center contains a library, a conference hall, a cafeteria and a large exhibition hall. The position and layout of the building are designed to counteract the noise of the highway.

Together with the building, a neglected park on the west side of the lot is included in the proposal. The park is an important feature of the block and a unifying element in the composition of the project.

The site is located in El Raval neighborhood, which is found in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona. The lot has a dividing wall on the north side that was uncovered when the previous building was demolished. The building I propose will replace the old one, setting an end to the block and generating a large plaza at the south. This kind of large open air spaces in such a dense place like el Raval are very valuable. Although the position of the building may seem to cut the street extension strategy, the idea is that the street continues inside the building and becomes a large exhibition hall. Once inside the building people can access the rest of the floors through the elevator and staircase situated at the center.

In the plaza, irregular bleachers are displayed following the shape of the building which could be used as improvised scenarios.

  • CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC IN BARCELONA, SPAIN (2006)

The site is located in the historical centre of Barcelona. The building consists of two L-shapes which meet at their tips. The staircases and elevators are located in these points. The entrance to the school is located on the west faade and the access to the underground auditorium is under the main porch on the south side of the building.

The L-shape design encloses a courtyard while at the same time opens to the park providing most parts of the building with views to the park.

Due to the narrowness of the streets and the fact that it is an educational building, the windows were a sensitive issue to take into consideration. There are 3 types of windows. The normal windows, which have views to the courtyard, the ones that have views to the public building on the East side and the ones that face residential buildings.

  • HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN MUSEUM, ODENSE, DENMARK (2013)

The concept of the project is based on a spatial interpretation of an idea behind all Hans Christian Andersens fairy tales. In his stories the world is divided in 2: the real & the fantastic.

In our project, the real world is at the surface-level and is represented by the existing buildings, the park and the entrance to the museum. The fantastic world, is underground and hosts the exhibition spaces.

To enter the museum and begin their journey the traveler must go through the lake by descing a ramp. As in HCAs stories, nature is the interface between the 2 worlds and water is the gateway. In our proposal vegetation, water & light are key elements in the visitors experience. These are an intrinsic part of the museum and in combination with several types of Artifacts scattered through the site they help visitors to be aware of this dual world.

At the end of the journey, travelers go into the Moral Space, which returns them back to reality while revealing new knowledge about some aspect of human complexity.

    KOKEDAMA HOLDER DESIGN (2015)

The Kokedama Holder is a personal exploration into product design using Rhino + Grasshopper & 3D printing. This exploration is an open project because I continue to modify the design algorithm and produce different results.

Regarding my future goals on this project, I would like to experiment with other materials more suitable for holding plants such as ceramic or biodegradable materials, and to continue the design exploration between vegetation and geometry. These two goals combined are highly challenging because often the plant needs and the structural requirements of these materials are contradictory.
