Sharing economy & collaborative consumption

• Sharing economy:• refers to economic & social systems that enable shared access to goods &

services

• by sharing & reusing the idle or excess capacity in goods and services

• Complete opposite of the overconsumption & “always more” society

• Access to goods vs. owning goods

• Rachel Botsman, author of "What mine is yours“ or this presentation

Why peer-to-peer carsharing?

•Average car sits (including yours) idle 95% of its time…

• ... yet costs > € 5500/year in maintenance, amortisation, taxes, fines, parking, etc…

• For young (and not so young) people:• possessing a car becomes an unnecessary burden (costs, finding a parking

spot, pollution)

• but still need to be able to use a car from time to time

=> Usage-based vs. ownership-based mobility

Peer-to-peer carsharing: studies

• Roland Berger: “Shared mobility: how new businesses are rewriting the rules of the private transportation game”: 50% of car owners in industrialised countries would, in principle, share their vehicle with others

• Ifop: "Les Français et l’abonnement": 50% of French consumerswould agree on sharing their own goods

• Nielsen: “Is sharing the new buying”: 21% of European consumersare interested to share their car

• Flemish Government & Autopia study: “Particulier autodelen”: 60% of Flemings are ready to use carsharing or to share their own car

•University of Utrecht: "Consumer potential of collaborative consumption": • 25% of Dutch car owners would be ready to share their car

• while 38% of the population would be interested in using cars from others through a peer-to-peer carsharing scheme

monthly growth 10%

•OuiCar: 13 000 cars

•Netherlands: • Snappcar, heading towards 10 000 cars

Peer-to-peer carsharing: how it works

•Owner A puts his car profile on CarAmigo

• Somewhere in Belgium or elsewhere, a driver B needs a car for a few days

•B finds the car of A on CarAmigo, books it, and pays through the site

•A & B meet in person on D day for the key remittance, doc verification & car check-in

•As of D day, all-risk insurance & roadside assistance cover the car during the whole carsharing

Tangible USP’s of peer-to-peer carsharing

• For the driver:• 1. Huge availability of cars, spread out all across Belgium (vs. just train

stations)

• 2. Different set of cars: much broader choice, not the usual stereotypes

• 3. Cheaper 30-50% than regular car rentals

• 4. Roadside assistance: no risks

• For the owner:• 1. Additional income: money while sleeping

• 2. Insurance: no risks

• For both: green & mobility-friendly, it simply makes sense
