ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Dear Reader,
Closure of Safety Assist Program (previously Safety House)
For many years now Aldinga and Sellicks have had a Safety
Assist program. Originally called Safety House and based on
the Canadian ‘Block Parent’ scheme, it provided safe haven
for someone, particularly children, in need. This, as for all like programs around the state, is about to be closed down
and wound up.
I quote the media release sent out to all participants in September 2015.
“A LEGACY OF SAFETY
After three decades of loyal service to South Australia, Safer Communities Australia (formerly the Safety House
Association of SA) is calling it a day.
Community expectations around ensuring the safety of
children have reached new levels and our volunteers, members, staff, safety ambassadors and schools and friends
os Safer Communities can all be proud of the part they have
played in helping the community raise their expectations. New technologies, research and increased understanding of
what it means ti be safe at home, in the community and
online has influenced the Board’s decision to call it a day
and close the Safety Assist (formerly Safety House) Program. This decision will bring to a close the outdated method
of placing signs in shop windows, homes and businesses
identifying where children might go to seek help. With the required and necessary changes in regularly checking the
suitability of not just premises but also of all people at Safety
Assist locations, the organisation cannot effectively control or provide 100% assurance to the community that nothing
adverse could happen to children when they are seeking
help.
The cost of checking and having quality assurance monitoring mechanisms in place for these locations is now
prohibitive to manage confidently.
Brenton Keen, President, Safer Communities Australia Inc said: ‘In the past year only 10 reports of usage have come from Safety Assist (Safety House) locations. New technologies like apps and mobile phones are now being used by children and their families providing another level of safety. These

technologies weren’t even thought of when we first started. Our risk assessment of the program and the systems required to meet today’s high community standards for keeping our children safe have meant that it is cost prohibitive to continue the Safety Assist program. I want to thank the South Australian Government for its continued commitment to Safety Assist. Their support has enabled us to provide our service to the community. We will be working over the next year to close the Association effectively and efficiently and in the process recognize the valuable contribution our members have made to community safety over the years. We want our Primary School based Safety Ambassadors Program to be our organisation’s legacy and so we are reviewing that program and eager to find a home for it to continue into the future.’ “
Another sign of the times. There is no stopping progress.
I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President / Editor

LOCAL CHURCH TURNS 150. St Ann’s Anglican Church Aldinga is ready for its 150th anniversary celebration on the 4th October! Bishop John Ford, Bishop of The Murray, will take the special 10 am service, which will be followed by a shared lunch in the hall and at 2 pm “A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon” with music, old favourite hymns
and readings. Cut off now from the main settlement of Aldinga by the realignment of the roads, St Ann’s stands alone but fully “alive” on the east side of South Road. Passers-by watched with interest in 2000 as parishioners collected rocks and built an adjoining hall. The origins of the church itself go back to 1865. The Aldinga
townsfolk who had up until then been attending the Church of England services at Willunga determined to build their own church, and called a meeting at the Aldinga Hotel to make plans. In October of that year a foundation stone was laid by Mrs Millecent Short, wife of the Bishop of Adelaide and the work began. The foundation stone has never been identified, and is possibly behind the tower, which was built in 1906, but Bishop Ford’s wife, Mrs Bridget Ford, will unveil a commemorative plaque on the 4th October.
On Sunday 18th October tours of the church and cemetery will be offered at 2, 3.15 and 4.30 pm.
Myponga win 1960 Title 1 Point Margin
In a terrific finish to the 1960 season, Myponga held off a do-or-die effort by Willunga to take out the title by the narrowest
of margins - one point. The game was full of interest from go to whoa and, although played at a terrific pace, with no quarter asked or given, it was played in the true Australian spirit and not once did spite creep in. There was a slight breeze, at. the commencement but as the day went on this dropped, and for the second half the game was played in near perfect conditions. The game was in the capable hands of field umpire Norm Mackay and gate takings
amounted to £224. Pop Faggotter's return vas welcomed by the Myponga supporters and he lived up to expectations by turning in an excellent game. .Jim Coverlid was tireless in his efforts to keep Myponga going and was one of the best players on the field. John Crow . with eight goals, played the full-forward position to perfection. Others to do well for Myponga were Bernie Kelly at full back At the celebrations in the evening he
announced his retirement but this can be taken with a grain of salt. Allan Crow (until injured) Harrv Hutchinson, N Fox and R. Hank For sheer brilliance Richard Croser must go very close for the honour of best afield. His was a game of near perfection. Dean Machell was in the thick of things all day and it was not his fault that in Willunga were pipped. Others to shine in a good team were Tony Sorrell, Brian Shanks, G. Reed (until injured),
K. Palmer, Barry Henningsen and Barry_ McDonald. Goal scorers for Myponga were: J. Crow 8, N. Fox 2 at Barry Hutchinson and Jim Coverlid. For Willunga: Barry McDonald 4, Kevin Palmer 4, Dean Machell 2 Dennis Rattigan, Brian Shanks and Barry Henningsen.

Tom's Trials to Triumphs
Fatherlessness can set a child up for all sorts of strife.
There’s traps enough for any young person as they
explore their way through life; but doing it on their own multiplies the chances of getting caught up in something
self-destructive and damaging to society.
The sense of rejection may not be rational but its hard to
shift and heavily affects the mind in decision making,
associations and pursuits.
Our twenty-year-old Tom acutely felt the loss of his
father who died suddenly and unexpectedly when Tom was just twelve. He's got his stories, but he now sees the
difficulties and experiences as useful to help others,
particularly young males and their distinct problem set.

At the recent Come Try Bowls day held at the club on a
beautiful sunny spring day, all rinks were filled with
local residents having a roll-up and gaining some ‘expert’ coaching assistance from friendly and helpful
club members who volunteered their time for the day.
Many guests enjoyed learning how to bowl so much they’ve now decided to join the club, either as a full
member or to register to play in a team in the very
popular Wednesday Night Bowls Competition which
commences in mid October.
Showing that the sport is truly one for all ages, the young
and the not so young alike all learned the basics of lawn bowls, they enjoyed a sausage sizzle, lots of prizes-
including a brand new set of lawn bowls were offered,
and there were lots of laughs.

FRIENDS OF WILLUNGA AND ALDINGA LIBRARIES
are deeply saddened by the passing of Yvonne Trusson on 1st September 2015.
Yvonne was a much respected member of the Friends
for nearly 20 years and she will be sorely missed by us all.
The Friends group was an important part of Yvonne's
life and we are trying to keep things going amid
dwindling numbers. We will be organising a tribute to Yvonne on Thursday
22nd October at the Aldinga Library with a light
luncheon and music to start at 12 noon. We invite all of her friends to come along and join us If you would like to attend please phone Shirley 8557

Yvonne was also involved in other community groups of
which Aldinga U3A is one. She was also active in the
fight against cancer, through which she had lost her
husband some years ago. She will be missed in the community.
Our thoughts go out to her family & friends.

To Kevin Hutton, President of ABRA & Editor of Coastal Views,
Re Editorial in Coastal Views, August 2015 concerning
Foreshore Access Plan.
The Community is entitled to ask the question of the
Onkaparinga Council why the new Esplanade path is at various points so far from the existing path & coastal views despite a
large response from people during the consultation process
indicating for this to be kept to so. Protecting native vegetation
(such as it is), cliff stability, & sea change impacts questionable)
are some of the reasons given.
This seems inconsistent with the fact that portions of the
path remain along the original alignment.
What is really jarring is the use of "prison bar" style fencing at
the look out points.
If the final fencing style was selected from a range of
options presented to stakeholder groups (was ABRA one of these
groups consulted?) it was a poor choice & has spoilt the whole natural atmosphere of the coastal path.
The point is, considering the complaints from the local
community what can be done about this!!
The other fencing is low key & not obtrusive & would appear to
fulfill the purpose of being "consistent with Australian
standards".
The overall concept of the shared path looks good & in
time will mellow into the surroundings, unfortunately the seated
look out areas do not provide a positive "user experience" so
desired by the Onkaparinga Council.
Julie Taylor, Port Willunga Thanks Julie. Yes ABRA did respond to the consultation pointing out the need to follow the original path where possible to retain the views and recommending unobtrusive fencing. - Ed
Dear ABRA Committee,
Thank you so much for helping me to get to Darwin for
the U12 Australian Rugby Championships. I had a fantastic time. We didn't win any games, but we
scored in all but 1 game. Some of the boys from QLD and NSW
were massive and scary. There was a kid from QLD that had a
beard.
I did manage to
take down a big kid from
NSW and mum has it on
DVD.
It was really hot but I love
the heat and we went
swimming everyday. We
went to Berry Springs and we went and saw jumping
crocodiles on the river
and I enjoyed that too.
Thanks again
ABRA for helping me
with this opportunity, I
am so happy.
From Angus Bradley. Angus and his Mum wrote to us explaining about his success in being selected for the state team and requesting financial assistance to cover his costs. We were happy to help with some of the burden. Well done Angus. - Ed.
