launched the Evolium™ Concept for its successful mobile radio access portfolio (2G and 3G) and follows

the same approach for its new WiMAX portfolio. This product development strategy is based on the

3. WIMAX BASE STATION IN RAN ARCHITECTURE

3.1 WiMAX RAN Architecture

Typically, a WiMAX Access system comprises three basic elements: the User Equipment, the Base Station,

the Access Control and an Operation & Maintenance center as pictured hereafter:

User Equipment / Subscriber Station

Several 802.16e User Equipments are available on the market depending on the service to be offered :

Customer Premises Equipment – CPE

Self install and plug & play indoor modem to offer Wireless DSL services, at home or at

office, including several options, such as Voice Over IP or WiFi access point.

Nomadic User Equipments

Laptops or PDAs can be equipped with WiMAX PCMCIA cards based on 802.16e standard.

WiMAX Base Station

Base Station connects Subscriber Station to a wired network and serves as the wireless equivalent of a LAN

hub. A WiMAX access network with connectivity to the wired network comprises several BS that have some

area of overlap so that mobile devices can roam from one BS to the next seamlessly.

WiMAX Access Control

The WiMAX Access Control (WAC) provides the connectivity for the SS/MSS with the rest of the network

(corporate network, Internet, Core Network, etc). It plays a vital role during the authentication and

authorization of the user. Based upon the results of authentication, it may allow the user to access the

network, access some limited local services or deny the access.

Operation & Maintenance Center

The Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX OMC-R will help you in your network deployment while ensuring optimal Quality

of Service (QoS). With the integration of a full set of management features geared to network's special

needs and ready to slide right into operator’s information system.

3.2 The Compact WiMAX Base Station Concept

A Compact WiMAX Base Station (WBS-C) provides wireless Internet access to Subscriber Stations (SS),

which are compliant with Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standard and IEEE

802.16e. The Base station conveys Internet Protocol (IP) data between the SS and the Internet by

implementing the WiMAX air interface. This provides an equivalent DSL path to the subscriber for Internet

connection and Voice over IP (VoIP) communication, while thanks to embedded mobility mechanisms

based on Mobile IP to bring some nomadicity /portability and mobility functions.

The Alcatel-Lucent Compact WiMAX Base Station is based on a single carrier with embedded 4 antennas

AAS system in a single box concept that offer full flexibility to answer various sites constraints.

Rural or Urban sites,

Mono sector or Multiple-sector (typically 3) sites configuration,

As a general solution the Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX solution relies on an IP transport based solution. The Radio

site (where several BS can be co-located, for instance a tri-sectorized site will use 3 Base Stations) is build

around a LAN concept. To connect the BS to the various kinds of WiMAX Access Network (WAN) transport

layer a Transport Adapter box must be used to convert from WAN to LAN. (The sectorized BSs of a site are

connected through LAN to the Transport Adapter box.)

The BSs can be connected either in star configuration (Site A,B) or in chain configuration (site X).

Therefore the Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX BS is equipped with two LAN interfaces for user traffic. In case of

outdoor installation, only optical LAN interfaces of the Base Station Compact can be used to perform the

daisy chain between BSs. In indoor cases, the electrical LAN interfaces can be used for chain purposes.

Different sites can arranged in a WAN chain if this is supported by the Transport box (site A,B).

A typical configuration is 3 sectors per site, one BS per sector, but the Alcatel-Lucent BS can be installed

in any configurations sites (mono sector or multi sectors – 2, 3, 4 etc....).

4. COMPACT WIMAX BASE STATION ARCHITECTURE

4.1 Overall Architecture

The Compact WiMAX Base Station architecture is based on a flexible architecture with only 4 main

modules integrated in a single housing making the Alcatel-Lucent solution the most compact WiMAX

Base Station.

4.2 Main Modules

4.2.1 Network and Modem

This module includes 3 main functionalities implemented,

802.16e MAC

Based on flexible and powerful Network Processor platform.

802.16e PHY,

Based on EVOLIUM concept, and to ensure a complete future proof approach through SW

upgrade, the PHY layer including all required digital signal processing are implemented on a

combination of DSP and FPGA

Base Station Compact O&M

As well, the NEMO board provides the transmission function while hosting an IP/Ethernet

transport functionality ensuring the L3/L2 transport to and from WAC, OMC configuration and

monitoring management, as well as to other chained base stations.

For TDD synchronisation purposes BS is equipped with a GPS receiver to synchronize its frame

(timing and frequency) with other BS in the network.

4.2.2 RF Modules

4.2.2.1 RFCO Module

The Quad RF converter module performs digital base band to RF conversion in Tx direction and vice versa

in Rx direction. To serve 4 antennas, the mentioned functionality is implemented 4 times on the Quad RF

converter board.

4.2.2.2 FEU Module

On the Front End Unit, power amplifier (PA), low noise amplifier (LNA), RF filter and Rx/Tx antenna

switch to permit the TDD mode of operation, are implemented.

The power amplifier is used in the transmit path and delivers 35dBm RF mean output power to the

antenna connector (43 dBm max with PAPR = 8 dB).

The low noise amplifier is used in receive path and amplifies the received antenna signal.

The RF filter is used in both directions Rx and Tx. In Tx direction the filter is used to prevent from

emitting spurious out of band RF power. In RF direction the filter is used to provide sufficient adjacent

frequency bands rejection to maximize the carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) at LNA input.

Through different configuration of switches, transmitted signal can be analysed to adjust predistortion of

the PA in the NEMO board, and also reflected signal or others coming from antenna can be monitored for

the antenna VSWR and array calibration.

4.2.3 Power Supply

The power supply unit delivers the necessary voltages to supply the devices of the BS. Depending on

network request, the input can be: either AC covering 220V AC /110V AC or 48V DC, and it delivers

outputs according modules requests.

The power supply block includes 2 power distribution paths to increase the BS reliability. One path is

feeding the NEMO, half of the RFCO, and 2 FEUs, while the other power path is feeding the NEMO again,

the second half of RFCO, and the 2 last FEUs. In case of failure of one power distribution path, the NEMO

and 2 RF parts are available to carry on WiMAX transmissions.

In option, a site support cabinet is proposed to house apart, 48V DC power supply with battery backup (4h

or 8h), as well as room provision and cabling facilities to welcome microwave transmission equipment

(IDU), additional DC/DC converter, Ethernet wiring/connections, external alarms connection…

The Alcatel-Lucent Compact WiMAX Base Station provides

4 antennas connectors, (N female connectors with QN adapter)

3 Ethernet interfaces for LAN and Local Maintenance Terminal (LMT)

• Both Electrical and Optical interfaces are possible for LAN network connection.

• RJ45 connectors for indoor electrical interfaces with 100M Ethernet speed (Fast Ethernet)

Outdoor Electrical Ethernet (LAN1+LMT) interfaces are available through hybrid cable.

• Optical interface for fiber LAN backhaul is possible using SFP module; option to be mounted

during commissioning; with 1Giga Ethernet speed. Single mode fiber with LC connector is used,

and LX interface type allows up to 10 km connection.

4.4 Mechanical and Installation Principles

In addition to the high compactness (26 liters for the basic unit) and the aesthetic side, the Compact

WiMAX Base Station has been designed in a flexible, modular and extensible way to facilitate the

installation and replacement process.

4.4.1 Mounting frame and connection box

A mechanical device (mounting frame) allows fast and easy installation or replacement of the Unit. A

connection area (CE box) at the bottom of the BS unit is ready to welcome options as optical connections

(splicing), external alarms board and connections, Ethernet cables for indoor usage.

The mounting frame has to be fixed on the wall or pole. The basic unit can be simply ‘plugged’ at the

frame.

4.4.2 Protection cover

In case of environmental or aesthetics constraints, a protection cover can be added as an option to the

Compact WiMAX Base Station. Please refer to Chapter 7.2 “Options” for details.

4.5 Installation and commissioning

After the fixture of the mounting frame (MOFRA) on the wall or pole, the shell is simply hooked and fixed

with clips to install the basic unit at the frame.

- For tower mounting, the unit can be easily manually lifted, with handwheel and wrope. Two

persons are needed for the operation.

In case the protection cover option is chosen, the back part of the cover is fixed with the mounting frame

.

Both indoor and outdoor (with protection cover) environments are possible.

Flexible collocated positioning of units is possible on the same wall or same mast.

In case of hardware failure the Compact WiMAX Base Station is replaced completely. No on-site

intervention for repair is foreseen.

Manual calibration during commissioning has not to be carried through. Thanks to the modular mounting

concept, the connection box integrated in the cabinet, as well as autotest during the commissioning

phase, the installation or replacement process is easy and fast.

By means of a convectional cooling the temperature range supported by the Compact WiMAX Base Station

is -33 °C up to +45 °C. Thanks to the optional fan mounted on top of the cover, hot-temperature

conditions up to +55 °C can be reached.

Alcatel-Lucent foresees this evolution in a second wave after availability of WiMAX systems in licensed

bands. The standardization efforts necessary to make evolve WiMAX standards currently adapted for

licensed band usage towards an unlicensed band usage has just started (mid 2005) with the creation of the

802.16h working group in IEEE 802.16 MAN standard.

(TTG+RTG), can reach up to around 160 µs. Adjustable TTG (with 50µs min RTG) values are according

Extended cell range capability (up to around 50km) is possible using extended TTG (+1, +2 or +3 symbols)

5.1.4 Multiple Antennas Processing

Scalable antenna solution: C-WBS is a 4*RF chains product optimized for beamforming solution. (MIMO

+ beamforming further release). The product is configurable to use only 2*RF chains over 4 in case

of MIMO 2*2 or diversity schemes. Omni antennas or sectorized standard antennas (diversity) can

be used in 2*RF configuration. A single AAS antenna panel with 4 elements inside (main

configuration) is used in beamforming mode.

2TX/2RX Diversity for 2 antennas configuration, for rural or suburb, or indoor usages, where diversity

gain comes from Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC). Antennas can be sectorized, or omni. With

spatial separation of several waves length, cross polarized antenna embedded inside a single

radome. The Alcatel Lucent Base Station Compact can handle: diversity 2*RX or Full diversity

2TX/2RX, as well MIMO configurations. (see L-WBS for optimized 2*RF chains product)

AAS beamforming algorithm for cell range extension, interference reduction, throughput

improvement.

The theoretical gains, for an antenna array with M elements, are:

20.log(M) for the downlink (e.g. 12 dB for M=4),

10.log(M) for the uplink (e.g. 6 dB for M=4).

Indeed, the gain is higher in downlink since on top

of the diversity gain, the power of each antenna elements adds up.

Beamforming and Cell range extension

Considering the number of sites, AAS with 4 array elements, brings to a coverage enhancement of up

to a factor of 2.

As an example: 100 radio sites with AAS would be more than 200 radio sites with simple SISO system.

Beamforming and Interference reduction

In cellular networks, the spatial concentration of the radiated power leads to a reduced interference

between co-channel cells and thus to smaller frequency re-use distances, as well as higher coverage

probability.

Beamforming and AAS throughput gain

Higher link budget and interferences mitigation benefits for a fixed cell range can lead to throughput

increase, considering that more efficient modulation schemes are possible.

Up to 40% throughput gain may be reached using AAS system in comparison with non AAS system.

5.2 Telecom and System Features

Synchronization

1 pulse per second signal from BS GPS receiver is used for timing (TDD frame) and frequency

synchronisation; with accuracy better than 0.5*10-6

4 hours of holdover time can be handled by the timing unit in case of GPS signal loss.

Quality Of Service

Unsolicited Grant Service (UGS), Best Effort (BE), Extended Real Time Variable Bit Rate ErtVBR are

supported. (WiMAX Forum Wave 1 certification.)

Real time and non real time Variable Bit Rate (rt/nrtVBR) part of WiMAX Wave2 are supported as well.

As an example VoIP service, triggered By SIP will use UGS service class over the air to guarantee the

packets QoS. In case of VoIP with silence suppression, the ertVBR class of service will be used over the

air, for better radio bandwidth optimization, as well as nrtVBR service class and RTSP signalling for

Mobile Video applications.

A call admission control function (CAC) will enforce this QoS management in BS, to ensure the

appropriate radio bandwidth sharing.

Depending on frequency bands, CPE types, antennas gain, propagation model parameters, outdoor

range can go from 500 m up to 13 Km, assuming that the minimum cell range given by WiMAX forum

Profile definition is in the table here after:

Cell range extension (up to around 50km) is possible, by adding 1 or 2 or 3 symbols in DL for TTG, and up

to 3 symbols more in UL extending the ranging region; for initial radio entry. Those frame arrangements

allow the longer round trip delay due to the Terminal far location. A radio capacity and throughput

reduction has to be taken into account considering those symbols spent for extended TTG and ranging

within the frame. Table here after gives the possible cell range according to TTG or Ranging

modifications, assuming both modifications in a balanced way (the weakest figures drives) are needed to

achieve the proper cell extension:

5.3 Operation & Maintenance

Autotesting

Upon activation of the Compact WiMAX Base Station, functioning status is given (all modules active,

antenna equipped) via a LED included in the connection box. During commissioning, the Local Maintenance

Terminal (LMT) is providing a complete view of the BS status.

Reliability and availability

Each basic unit is considered as one module. In case of failure, the complete entity is replaced, and no on-

site repair activity is foreseen.

All components have been chosen with latest technologies and high MTBF values in order to avoid a costly

and not compact redundant solution.

The service availability of a cell, defined as the mean time between two full service interruptions due to

critical hardware failure, is 12 years (functional MTBF).

The advanced architecture of the base Station Compact with 4 RF parts inside brings and additional

degree of reliability assuming that if a failure occurs in one FEU for example, the BS can continue

operating with only 3 RF parts without cutting the services.

The power supply block is including inside 2 power distribution paths. One path is feeding the NEMO, half

of the RFCO, and 2 FEUs, while the other power path is feeding the NEMO again, the second half of RFCO,

and the 2 last FEUs. In case of failure of one power distribution path, the NEMO and 2 RF parts are

available to go on WiMAX transmissions.

Autodetection and configuration

In case of daisy chain configuration, the “master” is the only one which is connected to the WiMAX Access

Control (WAC) interface and downloads the necessary software to all others through its own Ethernet

Switch. In the same way, all the WAC traffic is conveyed through this first edge Base Station. This

“master” function is just a name, this BS is identical to the others, only the way to perform the cabling

From the OMC-R, a Compact WiMAX Base Station site configuration in which several basic units are

connected in this mode (more than 1 sector configuration) appears as several independent WiMAX Base

Stations, which are assigned to different sectors.

access. The link between the OMC server and the BS is secured using SNMPv3 protocol, and

user_name/password authentication for the user.

5.4 Backhauling

The Compact WiMAX Base Station is using electrical Ethernet or optical Ethernet interfaces, 100bps or

1Giga bps.

According to channelization 5MHz or 10MHz respectively 10 Mbps or 20 Mbps throughput has to be

considered per BS (1 sector).

In basic cellular deployment, 3 sectors are foreseen leading to 25 Mbps or up to 45 Mbps throughput to

convey.

Star topology of these 3 BSs is possible as well as ring topology, thanks to the built in daisy chain

capability of the Base Station Compact to provide single interface to the Access Node (Point Of Presence).

For outdoor installation, only optical LAN interfaces have to be used to perform the daisy chain topology.

For indoor installation, electrical LAN interfaces become available for daisy chain purposes.

7. PRODUCT RANGE

This chapter describes all possible configurations and options of the Alcatel-Lucent Compact WiMAX Base

Station.

7.1 Configurations

7.1.1 Base Station Compact Configurations

7.1.2 Antenna Configurations

The Alcatel-Lucent Compact WiMAX Base Station supports different antenna configurations:

4 Rx / 4 Tx antennas (Smart Antennas): half-wavelength spaced 4 elements antenna array using a

single radome and housing (AAS mode). (BS with 4*RF chains)

2 Rx / 2 Tx antenna: diversity optimised configuration with 2 antenna elements, spaced at several

wavelengths (5 to 10) and each having an individual radome and housing; or two cross polarised

antennas in a single one; for omni or sectorised sites (BS with 2*RF chains activated over 4)

2 Rx / 1 Tx with omni or sectorized antennas, for low density area. (BS with 2*RF chains activated

over 4)

For a cellular deployment with 120° sectors the recommended AAS antenna arrays are composed of

antenna elements with each having:

• Gain: 17dBi (per element, 23 dBi for the AAS array)

• Impedance: 50 Ohms

• Front to back ratio: < -30 dB

• Return loss: > 20dB

• Side lobe suppression: > 20 dB

• VSWR within the frequency band lower than 1.4:1

7.2 Options

7.2.1 Protection cover

For each basic unit, Alcatel-Lucent provides as an option, an appropriate protection cover. It will protect

the Compact WiMAX Base Station equipment against environmental impact (dirt, wind, sun radiation, etc.)

and unauthorized access.

Moreover, thanks to its lightness, the cover is greatly adaptable to the environment.

The use of the cover is recommended for Outdoor environments, or in case of aesthetics constraints in

Indoor environments (public rooms).

The cover is made up of four parts:

• the back part, fixed with the mounting frame during the installation process,

• the front part,

• the top part,

• the bottom part, which gives the access to the connection box.

The second variant is mandatory in case of choosing integrated antenna option.

If the fan option is chosen, the top part of the cover is replaced by another one in which fans are

integrated.

7.2.2 Integrated fans

The standard product is designed to support temperature up to +45°C. Fans are added for operating

temperature up to +55°C (cf above pictures).

This option is a special top cover including:

• A fan cassette (with two fans),

• A fan control board,

• DC and alarms cables.

The speed of the fans is controlled depending on the temperature. In case of failure, an external alarm is

sent to the OMC-R.

The replacement from the standard top cover to the special one (including the fans) is done on field

during the installation process. The protection cover is mandatory when using the fans.

7.2.3 External Alarms

An additional external alarms board can be added within the Connection Entry Box of the C-WBS during

installation allowing the supervision from OMC of 4 external alarms (dry loop contacts open or closed)

available around the Base Station Compact (Shelter alarm, contact for open door, smoke detector, water

detector…)

Up to 100m of alarm cable length is possible from Base Station Compact to the detector, that affords a

wide variety of site connections.

Connection Entry Box and External alarms board

7.2.4 Optical connections

Alcatel Lucent Base Station Compact is providing optical LAN connections providing GIGA Ethernet

interfaces. The optical connections can be used to reach far location access point (up to 10km) using

single mode fiber and LC connections at BS. The optical connections is the as well the mandatory mean to

perform outdoor multiple BSs daisy chain configuration.

The Optical connections are performed using mechanical splicing techniques and optical patch cord at BS

and optical fiber access box. In star or daisy chain topology the appropriate optical connections are done

within the optical fiber access box for the “ground” access part as well as within the CE box at BS level.

SFP cages inside the C-WBS CE box are ready to welcome 1 or 2 SFP module(s) to perform respectively star

or daisy chain configurations.

7.2.5 Site Support Cabinet

The Site Support Cabinet (SSC) is an optional unit that can be added on a site to handle up to 3 Compact

WiMAX Base Stations. It consists of a separate outdoor cabinet which provides secure Power Supply

(48VDC) with battery backup, accomodations for Microwave backhaul equipment (IDU), as well as facilities

for electrical or optical LAN connections and power connections for BSs.

The characteristics of the site support cabinet are:

• Battery backup (the system is sized to provide a battery backup time of 4H or up to 8H (with

additional +4h backup option) for a Compact WiMAX Base Station sites (up to 3*BS) with

backhauling options.

• Size: H*W*D: 1530*700*800 cm (exemple)

• Environmental: EN55022, EN60215, EN60950, EN50116, EN6100, EN300, ETS300, IEC529, ROHS,

Bellecore (Telcordia), UL, CE marking…

• Temperature range from -33 to + 55°C thanks to an advanced cooling system (air conditioning)

(heat exchanger option can be provided for lower ambient temp (max 35°C).

A free space (7U) and 330W (-48V DC) power is available in the cabinet for options such as:

8. RADIO SITES ASPECTS AND INSTALLATION

8.1 Introduction, main Alcatel-Lucent principles

Minimize the radio sites and reuse existing sites

Overall WiMAX network deployment strategy is to deliver high throughput nomadic services with a global

coverage. In the deployment of such new radio technology and new services, the optimization of the

CAPEX is a key parameter for the overall success and to permit operators to reach financial targets. As the

main part of operator’s network investment is made of radio sites, it is an absolute target in order to

achieve this coverage strategy to minimize number of radio sites.

As Radio sites are becoming more and more a scare resources, due to raising environmental concerns, an

adequate strategy would be to favor solutions for sharing sites between existing deployed cellular

networks sites and WiMAX networks.

Environmental Concerns

It is also essential to realize that radio system deployment should take account of increasing

environmental concerns. The deployment of new radio systems should comply with new regulations.

However, worldwide it is proving an enormous challenge to find new radio sites. Consequently there is a

need for innovative radio sites solutions and solutions to easely integrate Compact WiMAX Base Stations in

existing radio sites and reduce visual impact of antennas.

8.3 Smart Antenna Solution

AAS (Adaptative Antenna System) is a key feature for offering nomadic and mobile services to WiMAX users

with PCMCIA equipments through providing additional gain in link budget.

Alcatel-Lucent develops AAS algorithms based on beamforming technologies with 4 linear array elements

(4 antennas connectors per sector).

Alcatel-Lucent Resarch & Innovation team together with European Universities and Antenna Manufacturers

has launched some advanced studies in order to be able to deliver optimized integrated antenna solutions

with 4 antennas acceptable for radio site deployments, ie compact, with a target of 17dBi antenna gain

(w/o AAS gain) for sectorized antenna (65-90°).

9.2 ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

All Compact WiMAX Base Stations fulfill the requirements of the following standards:

Lightning protection:

• Antenna: Nominal impulse discharge current wave (8/20)µs: 10 kA

• AC Nominal impulse discharge current wave (8/20)µs: 10 kA

9.3 Acoustic noise and ultrasonic

The emitted sound power level does not exceed 30 dBA without fan and 54 dBA with fan in one meter

distance (sound power measured according to ISO 3743).

9.4 Environmental protection for outdoor

The BS unit sheltered by the sun protection cover is designed to meet the environmental protection level

IP55 (with cover for connectors and sun protection) as described in IEC 529 "Classification of degrees of

protection provided by enclosures".

9.5 Environmental protection for indoor

The BS unit designed to meet the environmental protection level IP54 as described in IEC 529

"Classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures".
