Early in the morning on Saturday, Aug. 22, Port Alberni’s Monty Elliston will be back in the saddle alongside his brother Ray, and taking a very special horse ride.
The Ellistons will be participating in the Ride Across Canada, supporting Canadian veterans.
The ride is 211-day horseback ride across the country that founder Paul Nichols developed to help bring awareness to contemporary veterans and their stories. Elliston, who is president of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 293 in Port Alberni, spent 32 years in the Armed Forces. He started as an apprentice with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical
Engineers in 1956 as an electrician. With integration in 1968, anyone serving on aircraft were considered airforce members, so Elliston moved to the air side.
He retired from the airforce in 1986.
Elliston’s brother Raymond, who lives in Almonte, ON, is three years younger and served 38 years with the Royal Canadian Regiment, retiring as a lieutenant colonel with the infantry.
The brothers were the second generation of men serving in the military: their father served in the Second World War then, when the war was over, joined the militia.
Elliston’s son started in cadets and served with the reserves and the regular force before retiring a couple of years ago.
There are more than 540,000 veterans
in Canada with an average age of 56. The Ride Across Canada will feature the faces and stories of more than 700 veterans from Victoria to St. John’s, Newfoundland.
“In order to understand our veterans and their needs, it is imperative
that we hear their stories and get a clear vision of who our veterans are,” the organizers of the Ride Across Canada state on their website.
Every veteran of the Armed Forces has a story and Elliston is no different. “I don’t have any horror
stories,” he said. “I was never shot at.
“I served two tours in Europe during the Cold War and the families were there. Back in the late ‘60s it was still common practice for the wife and children to have a bag packed at all times in case of a
bugout or an alert. So it was stressful for wives too.”
When Elliston first heard about the ride he got behind the effort. “Then my brother said it was something he and I could do together.
“It’s also showing support for veterans today,” Elliston said.
Raymond rides regularly in Almonte, boarding his own horse in a nearby farm. He has been involved with the ride in another capacity, setting up base camps in Kingston and Smith Falls, near Ottawa.
It has been a few
years since Elliston has ridden a horse, he admits, but he is up to the challenge.
“The last time I rode a horse was with my brother’s horse, four or five years ago. But we both grew up with my grandfather’s horses.”
He and Raymond will depart Kingston, ON on Saturday, Aug. 22 and ride the leg to Ottawa, arriving in the nation’s capital on Aug. 29.
Elliston will be an “official” rider for one of the days of their leg; for the others he and Raymond will switch riding Raymond’s horse and driving the truck and horse trailer. Once the ride is finished, the veterans’ stories will be published in a book. To follow the ride or to make a donation, please go online to www.communitiesfor veterans.com.
Elliston is accepting donations at the Legion in Port Alberni, and Branch 293 will match donations up to $200. There is also a Facebook page to follow the event at Communities for Veterans, the Ride Across Canada.

Music gives the mind a boost
Everyone has a connection to music whether they listen to it much or not.
Music has become a very large part of peoples’ lives and with new origins of music softwares coming out on the market by the thousands; music has become an immense benefactor to culture.
Music has a special power to move people and stir emotions. Anyone who has ever wiped tears away while listening to a favourite sad song will know how powerful simple notes and chords can be.
A 2013 study at the University of Missouri has found that music is more than just an enjoyable factor of life; it is also a large part of people’s
overall health, source of mood change and ability to concentrate.
Over the years, many studies have been done to better understand the nature and extent of the effects music has.
The results consistently show that listening to the kind of music related to the emotions a person is currently experiencing usually boosts and strengthens those feelings. Most studies show that when after participants heard a short piece of music, they were more likely to interpret a neutral expression as happy or sad, to match the tone of the music they heard throughout the experiments. What was discovered sometimes people can understand the emotions of a piece of music without actually feeling them and this seemed to explain why some people find listening to sad music
enjoyable, rather than depressing.
When people listen to music they enjoy, levels of dopamine in the body were found to be up to nine per cent higher.
Dopamine is a chemical with the body that is known to produce a feel-good state in response to certain pleasures, from eating sweets to taking cocaine. The chills one gets from listening to certain music, is caused by the dopamine levels rising to maximum pleasure.
Daniel Levitin, a psychologist who studies the neuroscience of music at McGill University in Montreal, did multiple studies over the topic of music within the brain.
In one study reviewed, researchers studied patients who were about to undergo surgery. Participants were randomly
assigned to either listen to music or take anti-anxiety drugs. Scientists tracked patient’s ratings of their anxiety, as well as the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The results: The patients who listened to music had less anxiety and lower cortisol than people who took drugs.
Many of the studies, investigated the effect of music on emotions and happiness.
When this connection between music and happiness is understood, it can predict which songs will create happy and why certain music already does. When people are in a happy or giddy mood, they tend to choose happy, cheerful, joyous songs, over those of harsh, grungy, violent song genres. Sad music educes a similar, almost cloned; sense of happiness.

coverSHOTSMoments make up our daysOur annual Day in the
Life photo shoot offers so many moments in people’s lives—
fleeting pieces of their day that, collectively, make up the fabric of our community.
We choose the day abitrarily: one day in late June or early July, whenever all our staff members and invited photographers are able to set aside their regular tasks for a period of time in order to capture moments in yours.
We have photographed around big events like high school graduation and the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. We have taken our photos in pouring rain and near record heat. We always cross our fingers when we choose the date because we can neither predict nor control the weather.
There are some places we like to go every year: the maternity ward at West Coast General Hospital to see if we can capture a baby’s first day; the bustling Harbour Quay; uptown, downtown and across town.
This year we decided to change things up a little bit, and include stories that go a little bit beyond the photographs and accompanying captions.
For some of us, it was difficult to choose—every moment seemed worthy of a longer interview. For others, who are not journalists but who we rely on to
take part in our shoot, we turned to technology: we asked them to record audio of their interviews, so others could transcribe their chosen moments.
It was interesting to see what everyone chose as their moments, and how without any consultation among us, we came up with different moments in time, despite photographing our community all on the same day.
Photographing Charlie Jones is my favourite moment. Charlie has been featured in the past five Day in the Life special sections—ever since she was 10 months old.
She has been a special part of my life since the moment my friend Lisa gave birth to her, here at West Coast General, not on a Day in the Life day, but a notable one just the same.
On July 3, 2015, Charlie was one month shy of her sixth birthday when I captured her playing with chalk, sitting on the bow of her father Warren’s boat (as it sat trailered in the driveway) and discussing her Kindergarten class picture—the final Kindergarten photo taken at Gill Elementary School, which closed in June.

It’s just after 8 a.m. on a Friday morning and baker Paul Moeller has been hard at work for hours, baking all of Save On Food’s bread for the day.
The bakers at the store start baking early to make all the bread they’ll need throughout the day.
“At least 50 white and 50 brown. The deli takes at least 30 loaves just to do the sandwiches,” said Moeller.
“Lately, with all the ball tournaments around town we’ve
been doing 50 to 75 French bread.”Save On Foods takes extra care to
ensure that the loaves are perfect.“It has water from our bulk water
system so it’s been treated and it goes through [the pipe] and actually mists into the oven,” says Gary Jackson.
“One of the key things to making really good bread is keeping the humidity up, otherwise it’s dry and the texture isn’t quite right inside and the crust is ugly.”

A moment...with new puppiesFor Rachel Theus, a sales associate at the
Alberni Valley News, a highlight of our annual Day in the Life photo shoot is heading out to the Lepine Farm in Cherry Creek with her two sons, Kohen and Erik, to see what’s going on.
“Every year I go out there. This year I texted him the day before our shoot and asked if anything was going on, and he said his daughter Kaitlyn’s dog was about to have puppies. I said, ‘tell her to hold them in!’”
Cali the Red Heeler (an Australian cattle dog) failed to take Theus’s advice, and gave
birth to six pups that night —her first litter.Theus and her boys were able to visit the
pups before they were even a day old.The Lepine Farm is a cornucopia of delight
for children: there are horses, cows, pigs, rabbits, ducks, goats, and even the odd turkey. “I get excited to go out there every year,” says Theus.

A moment...of a lifetimeIt’s a bright, sunny and just windy enough day at the
Alberni Valley Regional Airport—perfect for takeoff, according to Vancouver Island Soaring Centre owner Andrzej Roznowski.
It’s also a day that’s been a long time in the making for Roznowski.
“I started flying gliders at 16 years old,” said Roznowski.“It’s truly addictive.”He’s been in Canada since 1998, not able to speak a
word of the language when he came to his new country.Roznowski had to leave Poland in 1984 because of
communism and wente to Germany before coming to B.C.“I had to go back to my civil engineering job which I didn’t
really like because I was a commercial pilot for many, many years,” he said.
“So I quit my job with Terasen Gas [now Fortis BC] and opened up operations in 2007.
“It was just a coincidence I came here.”— Katya Slepian 10:39 a.m.

A moment...of steamThere is a certain romanticism about the steam era
that draws people to the No. 7 steam locomotive that plies the Alberni Pacific Railway between Port Alberni and McLean Mill National Historic Site.
Perhaps it is the allure of the train’s gleaming steel hulk or the way the train slowly appears through the cloud of hot steam as it prepares to leave the train station. Perhaps it is realization that steam played a pivotal role in the advancement of humankind, or even the fact that steam trains are slowly disappearing the further away we get from their beginnings.
No matter: the steam train is what lured Garry Ives, his wife Joy, sister and brother-in-law Jean and Willy Fedoration and niece Karen Russell to Port Alberni on July 3. We captured Ives in conversation with engineer John Land as Land prepared to take the No. 7 steam train from Port Alberni Station to McLean Mill.
Ives, you see, is also an engineer who happens to drive the steam train at Fort Edmonton.
“Once you’re hooked on steam engines you’ve got to go and find them all,” says Ives. “They’re pretty unique machines. There are few left.”
Ives was a power engineer with Epcor in Edmonton, but his retirement is spent finding steam locomotives.
Land invited Ives to ride in the train’s cab on the way to the mill, however, Ives declined.
“It’s too hot up there.”Rod Gledhill agreed. Gledhill served as fireman for the
two runs to McLean Mill, looking after the boiler that gives the No. 7 steam engine its life. It was hot work on one of the hottest days of the summer so far: the temperature got up to nearly 50 degrees Celsius in the engine at the height of the day, Gledhill said.
For the train’s special third run of the day, for Alberni District Secondary School’s 20-year reunion at 7 p.m., Gledhill served as engineer.

A moment...with familyThree generations of the
Marshall family gathered on July 3 to build little libraries for Literacy Alberni.
Ted Marshall was in Port Alberni visiting his son from Paraparaumu, New Zealand, just outside Wellington, for the month. Chris Marshall—husband to Charmead Schella, executive director at Literacy Alberni, and a professional carpenter—had volunteered to build the libraries.
“It was fabulous and slightly unexpected that they did the little libraries together,” Schella said.
“It was huge for both of them. That project that they worked on together the whole month Ted
was here really cemented their togetherness as adult men. It was a really neat plateau to meet on and work together on something that will be a big benefit to the community.”
Because Ted Marshall visited while his grandsons were on vacation, it enabled all three generations to work together on the project.
On our Day in the Life, Schella photographed Ted, Chris and Chris’s two sons, Angus and Beck, working on the libraries in the Jericho Road Church workshop.
Watch for the libraries to appear in our community in the fall.

It’s mid afternoon on a boiling hot day as city works employee Brian Guy dumps birds eye—pipe bedding material— around a completed new sewer main on Ninth Avenue.
“Here, yeah, hold it,” directs Brandon Colclough.
The city has dug up Ninth Avenue to replace the sewer system below and repave the cracked asphalt above.
It’s the first time in 50 years that the city has done anything more than a patch-up job on Ninth Avenue, a situation mirrored all around the city.
But the sewer system underneath Ninth Avenue isn’t just being replaced —it’s being enhanced.
“We’re separating the
storm and the sanitary sewers,” explains the city’s engineering technician Boyd Wong.
Separating the two systems has two benefits, said Wong.
When they’re combined, both the sanitary sewage—what goes down your toilet and other appliances—and storm water are sent down sewer mains to the city’s sewage lagoon located near the Somass Estuary.
“It’s a waste to treat it all,” said Wong, adding that pumping a greater volume of liquid to the lagoon increases the wear and tear on the pump stations.
And when the sewer system can’t keep up, such as in times of heavy
rain, there’s another issue.“We have combined
sewer overflows [into the canal],” said Wong.
Though it’s heavily
diluted, it’s still not ideal environmentally and the province could impose harsher regulations on the amount of overflow
allowed. So the city is trying to
beat it to the punch, one street at a time.

A moment...at the golf course
The golf course is always a good place for a story, Alberni Valley News publisher Teresa Bird discovered during our 2015 Day in the Life photo shoot.
Bird was at the Alberni Golf Club to volunteer with Literacy Alberni (one of the charity recipients) and photograph activities on Friday, July 3. She played in the Charity Golf Classic the next day, which raised $42,000 to split between four local charities (Literacy Alberni, AV Rescue Squad, Alberni Valley Childcare Society and Bread of Life) and BC Children’s Hospital.
Ken Bibby, a former Alberni Valley resident now living in Nanaimo, returns every year to play in the tournament. He grew up in Port Alberni and worked with golf classic
founder Rob Shick at Plywood Mill, before Shick became a National Hockey League referee.
Bibby plays in the tourney with his brother-in-law.
Ian Stone, head pro for Uplands Golf Course in Victoria, looks forward to participating in the Charity Golf Classic every year. He volunteers his time as a celebrity golfer in the Beat
the Pros competition at hole No. 17, and usually raises more than $1,000 for charities. After five years of attending the event, he says it feels like coming home.

Doreen and Bob Bessette celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary party at the Bavarian Center on Saturday, July 4, a day after we captured family photos with them at Rogers Creek Park.
Bob and Doreen were married Wednesday, June 30, 1965 in New Westminster. The Bessettes have been Alberni Valley residents since moving here July 1, 1965, the day after they were married.
Why move to Port Alberni? Bob’s uncle brought them here to build a car care business at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Burde Street. He told him it would be a “hopping business” because of the pulp mill fallout.
Bob soon found this not to be true. Having a background as a shingle sawyer, he secured a job at Somass Shingle Mill. When the mill met its demise, Bob, being an entrepreneur, started his own shingle mill at Toquart Bay in July 1987 by purchasing sawmill equipment from his former employer, the defunct Somass Mill. He operated his Toquart mill for 13 years before retiring in July 2000.
Doreen, who was trained as a teacher, taught in several Valley schools for 30 years. Their first child, Julia, was born July 4, 1967; Doreen had worked right up until June 30. She was so excited about having their first child that she decided to take a year off.
Their second child, Cindy, was born just over a year later, on Aug. 20, 1968.
Doreen retired from teaching in 1995. Their daughter Julia and husband Ian, currently
live in Camrose, AB with their two daughters, Andra and Kathleen. Cindy is married to David Derrick, and lives in North Vancouver with their daughter Emily.
Bob and Doreen enjoy retirement in Port Alberni. They are members of the Echo Sunshine Club, participate in volunteer opportunities and also take advantage of their trips.
They like to fish and belong to the Trinity Church.

A moment...on the roadThe gravel lot at
the Alberni District Fairgrounds was filled with recreational vehicles on July 3 as members of the Vancouver Island chapter of the Family Motor Car Association gathered for their first-ever rally in Port Alberni.
Finding a location large enough to accommodate up to 30 RV units can be challenging.
The fairgrounds easily handled everyone, power was
available and the Kin Hut was ideal for everyone to share a meal—which Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan attended.
“It’s a neat location and somewhere we don’t often get to,” FMCA past-president Joe Blogg said.
Their four-day visit included shopping, a visit to the Martin Mars waterbomber base (a club member is a former Mars pilot), a tour of the Alberni Pacific Railway’s roundhouse and a
trek to McLean Mill National Historic Site.
Most of the RV owners also have tow vehicles, so they were able to get around.
The club organizes three or four rallies a year on Vancouver Island between May and September. B
y October, most of them are snowbirds and head south to warmer climes for the winter.
Home is wherever you hang your shingle—such as the Alberni District fall fairgrounds—as Pete and Linda Geddes of Port Alberni have found while travelling with the Family Motor Car Association, Vancouver Island chapter.

From / A3Music that is
perceived as sad actually induces romantic emotions as well as sad emotions. Unlike sadness in daily life, sadness experienced through art actually feels
pleasant, possibly because the artistic forms do not pose an actual threat to personal safety. And people, regardless of their musical taste, experience these conflicting emotions while listening to sad
music. This could help
people to deal with their negative emotions in daily life, rather than have the belief that sad is sad, and happy is happy; music is a form of art, and art is simply an expression of emotion.

I always taught my kids to work toward their goals, so when my grandson told me he wanted a new bike, a paper route was the answer. Now, two days a week, we walk through the neighbourhood while he delivers the Alberni Valley News. He bought the bike he wanted and is now saving for his next purchase.
