‘ALBATROSS’ Arranged by Stuart Ryan Composed by Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac’s revered instrumental ‘Albatross’ was the only recording to score the group a number one hit in the UK Music Charts in November 1968. The relaxed, spacious feel of the piece lends itself well to solo fingerstyle guitar and I chose DADGAD as a tuning because of the opportunity to use some of the chord voicings that are unique to this tuning. In addition we can mimic the steady pulse of the bass on the original recording by using the open 6th string as a pedal tone all the way through. There aren’t too many challenges in this arrangement so focus on steady timing with the thumb and relaxed, accurate stretching for some of the larger chord shapes.
