50 Years of Excellence in Technical Education in Southwest Georgia

Strong Tradition. Proven Success. Powerful Future.

Strong Tradition. Proven Success. Powerful Future.

Page 2: Albany Technical College - Annual Report 2011

During all of 2011, Albany Technical College celebrated its 50 Year Anniversary. We are so glad that you were a part of that

celebration. Our theme of “Strong Tradition, Proven Success, Powerful Future” continues to resonate in all we do at Albany

Tech.

After a kickoff in December of 2010, our 50th anniversary began with a First Responders vehicle dedication in January

and a convocation ceremony in February. Our keynote speaker for the convocation was none other than Lieutenant General

Willie Williams, Commander for the United States Marine Corps and former Commanding General of Marine Corps Logistics

Base Albany. A dear friend of mine and of Albany Technical College, we were so pleased to have Lt. General Williams speak

on such a historic day.

Another landmark of our year-long celebration was the opening of our new Logistics Education Center in June. If you

haven’t had a chance to tour our new Center, we encourage you to stop by. The new facilities, which include a state-of-the-

art Culinary Arts kitchen and training areas, Student Center, Media Center, Executive Board Room, and Logistics Education

Auditorium, are beyond impressive.

In addition to the opening of our new building, we held a 50th Gala at Phoebe Putney’s Medical Towers. The gathering of

friends of the college, community members, and employees made the evening shine.

In November, I was personally overwhelmed the Albany Technical College Board of Directors, faculty and staff chose to

name the new Media Center in my honor. My family and I wish to thank the college and the community for this tremendous

honor.

As we move forward in 2012, we are standing firm on the “Powerful Future” aspect of our 50th theme. We are already in

the process of renovating several areas on our campus. One of those areas includes the renovation of the old student center

in Freedom Hall so that we can expand our bookstore operations. In addition, those students who already take advantage

of our Academic Achievement Center will have increased opportunities in our new Center being built in the former Media

Center in Freedom Hall.

We invite you to come visit our campus and see all the improvements we are making so that we can continue and build on

our promise to you in 2012 and that is Workforce Education and Development.

American Proteins Donated Annual Scholarship to Albany TechOn January 24th, Norman Barber, Human Resources and Safety Manager for American Proteins, Inc., presented Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Tech, with a check for $6,500 for the Foundation’s scholarship funds. Forsyth County business and civic leader, Tommy Bagwell and his wife, Chantal, established the $500,000 Bagwell Family Scholarship Endowment to provide scholarships for students attending technical colleges located near their family business locations. The family business, American Proteins, Inc., currently has three locations, including one in Cuthbert, GA. Scholarship recipients are chosen using the following criteria: financial need, proximity to the company’s operation sites and the likelihood of their success. “We want to help as many students as we can to come to college, especially those living in our rural areas,” said Dr. Parker. “This scholarship will give students a chance to achieve

their educational goals and become successful members of the workforce. For that, we are grateful to American Proteins and the Bagwell family.”

Albany Tech Kicked Off 50th Anniversary With Homecoming Week ActivitiesAs Albany Tech continued its 50th anniversary in January, Homecoming Week started on Monday, January 31. The week’s activities began with a Pep Rally in front of the campus bookstore. Albany Tech Celebrated 50th by Planting a Tree for Arbor DayAlbany Technical College, a Tree Campus

USA, celebrated Arbor Day on Thursday, March 3, 2011, beginning at 10 a.m. on the grounds between Prosperity Hall and the George M. Kirkland Administration Building, by planting a tree in honor of its 50th Anniversary. For the 50th year anniversary commemoration, George Paul, Environmental

Horticulture instructor at Albany Tech, selected a large live oak, because it is the Georgia state tree and because of what it symbolizes – strength and courage. The tree was planted in close proximity to Prosperity Hall, also known as Building A, since it was the College’s very first administration building. Mr. Chuck Norvell, Urban Forester for the Georgia Forestry Commission, enlightened attendees on

the history of Arbor Day and the importance of trees in our environment. In addition, Ilisi Malone, City of Albany Arborist, also spoke on the importance of preserving and protecting trees. In addition, Albany Tech was joined by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Delta Eta Omega Chapter, Inc.) for the celebration. Founded in 1908 at Howard University, the sorority became

the first national sorority for black

women. In 1946, eleven women gathered to charter the first black Greek organization in Albany, named Delta Eta Omega Chapter.

Emerson Electrical Foundation Donated $500 Scholarship to Albany Tech On March 16, 2011, the Albany Tech Foundation accepted a $500 scholarship donation from the Emerson Electrical Foundation. The Emerson Electrical Foundation is made up of about a dozen former Albany Tech students and faculty members who studied electrical systems under former instructor Willie Emerson. They asked for the scholarship dollars to go to deserving industrial electrical, air conditioning technology or electrical construction and maintenance students. The scholarships pay for tuition, fees, books and tools. “We gladly accepted the generous gift,” said Dr. Parker, President of Albany Tech. “The scholarships will allow students, who may not have had enough money to attend college, to learn a skill that is in high demand in southwest Georgia. There’s a critical shortage of electricians and air conditioning techs, and the students who receive this scholarship will surely find employment as soon as they graduate.” Emerson taught at ATC from 1961 to the mid-1990s. He also founded the college’s first basketball team.

The PBI program supports colleges that have undergraduate enrollment that is at least 40 percent African American and at least 50 percent low-income or first generation college students. The formula and competitive grant funds may be used for a wide range of projects, including programs that are structured to encourage more students to pursue and complete a college education. The money can also pay for the development of tutoring, counseling and service programs that will ensure students’ academic success, as well as upgrades to the colleges’ learning facilities. The eight TCSG colleges that received the $1.25 million formula grants, payable at $250,000 over five years, were Atlanta Technical College, Augusta Technical College, Central Georgia Technical College, Columbus Technical College, Georgia Piedmont Technical

College (formerly DeKalb Technical College), Middle Georgia Technical College, Savannah Technical College and South Georgia Technical College.

Albany Technical College, Atlanta Technical College, Augusta Technical College, Columbus Technical College and Georgia Piedmont Technical College each received a $2.4 million competitive grant, which will be paid in $600,000 installments over four years. South Georgia Technical College was awarded $1.5 million from the competitive grant, also distributed over four years. “We are excited about this great opportunity to introduce deserving high school students, who might otherwise not be exposed to such career choices, to a variety of careers in Engineering Technology and related fields,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College. “The project is called SASET – Students Achieving Success with Engineering Technology. The goal of the project is to increase success, persistence, and graduation rates for African-American students in the STEM area of Engineering Technology – a field that is vastly underrepresented by African-American students and members of the workforce,” said Parker. “The goal of the Technical College System of Georgia is to open the doors of a college education to all and to provide every student with the knowledge and skills that they need to compete in today’s job market,” said TCSG Commissioner Ron

Jackson. “These grants will greatly assist the recipient colleges in their efforts to add to and enhance programs that are designed to help African American and low- and middle-income students learn, graduate and become an integral part of Georgia’s 21st century workforce.”

Albany Technical College Cut Ribbon on Firefighter Training TowerAlbany Technical College cut the ribbon on the new Firefighter Training Tower on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 2pm on the east side of the campus. The Firefighter Training Tower is a two-story steel frame structure built for training firefighters. The structure consists of a first and second floor and working roof area. The interior stairwell leads to the second floor and an interior fixed ladder leads from the second floor to the roof. In addition, an exterior ships ladder leads to a balcony attached to the second floor. A system of removable panels, located on the second floor, enables a myriad of training scenarios for search and rescue operations. The training tower will provide realistic training in a safe environment for a variety of exercises for firefighter students including hose advancement, fire attack, ventilation, search and rescue, and forcible entry. During the Firefighter 1 and 2 programs at Albany Tech, students are taught a total of 96 tasks, which they must demonstrate proficiently. In addition, in order to obtain National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter Certification, students must successfully demonstrate proficiency of 21 Life Safety Skills. National certification affords Albany Tech students a uniformity and portability of qualifications, as well as marketability for future employment. “Training is the one and only time when

instructors have complete control over the conditions and environment of which to prepare future firefighters,” said Don Laye, chairperson for the Fire Science Technology program at Albany Technical College. “Albany Tech instructors will utilize the training tower to incorporate numerous types of training exercises, as well as develop and prepare students for future employment. Repetition and practice of skills will eliminate dangerous and unwanted habits and further prepare Albany Tech students to become future firefighters.”

Albany Technical College and Albany State University Enter Housing AgreementAlbany Technical College and Albany State University made a formal announcement on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at 11am, in Gibson Hall on the ASU campus, to discuss their new joint housing agreement. Beginning in January for the spring semester, Albany Tech students who need housing will be able to obtain residence at Albany State’s Wiley or Gibson Halls. In addition to housing, students will also be able to take advantage of a meal plan on ASU’s campus. This agreement marks the first of its kind between a Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and a University System of Georgia (USG) institution. Albany Tech and Albany State already have several articulation agreements in place, so this agreement

is another win-win for both institutions. In addition, ASU provides public safety on the ATC campus and all men and women’s basketball home games for ATC are played at ASU’s HPER Complex. “This is a historic opportunity to expand a great relationship,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College. Since starting its men’s and women’s basketball teams, Albany Tech has had a need to provide reasonable housing for student athletes, many of whom come from other states. This agreement allows Albany Tech’s student athletes to have safe, affordable housing in a collegiate atmosphere. “ASU has had dormitory space that was not being utilized. This allows ATC students from outside of the community to have a safe place to live while they earn their associate’s degree,” said Parker. Albany State University President Everette J. Freeman said, “This agreement extends the enormously productive relationship with ATC to strengthen the opportunities for ATC students, especially talented athletes, to remain in Albany to complete their undergraduate education and compete athletically.”
