Alamo Wash Basin Management Study Project Update – September 2018 FLOOD CONTROL FLOOD CONTROL Project Location The Pima County Regional Flood Control District (District) has begun work on the Alamo Wash Basin Management Study (Study). The Study area encompasses about 9.5 square miles within the City of Tucson and includes the Alamo, Arcadia, Van Buren and Sahuara washes. Project Description The purpose of the Study is to identify flood-hazard areas and drainage problems in order to develop a comprehensive flood-control plan (Plan) that provides cost-effective solutions to alleviate and/or manage flooding within the Study area. The goal of the Plan is to develop strategies that reduce flooding, improve public safety and provide a balanced multi-objective approach to managing the watersheds, floodplains and resources in a fiscally responsible way. In addition, the Plan will provide guidance for development, redevelopment and retrofits in flood-prone areas and drainage alternatives to further limit the potential for flooding. Finally, the Plan will ensure that the floodplain management regulations will balance potential competing interests in the community.
