SIGNIFICANCE
Emirates Global Aluminium operates aluminium smelters in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, producing one in every 25 tonnes of aluminium worldwide.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery is a key part of EGA’s strategic expansion upstream in the aluminium value chain, creating new revenue streams and securing the competitive supply of raw materials we need.
Alumina refineries convert bauxite into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters. EGA is also building a bauxite mine in the Republic of Guinea.
The total project cost of Al Taweelah alumina refinery was approximately $3.3 billion.

SIGNIFICANCE
SCALE
Millions of tonnes of materials will be transported each year at the refinery by an 8,150 metre conveyor.
The storage capacity of the bauxite shed is 450,000 tonnes – the same weight as the Burj Khalifa.
There are 222 different tanks, with a total volume of 350,000m3 – equivalent volume to 140 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The plant has some 9,500 separate instruments.
SAFETY
Preparations to run Al Taweelah alumina refinery began in October 2013 – before construction started.
Preparation, called Operational Readiness took 500,000 hours of work.
585 people make up the operations team, 66 of whom are UAE Nationals including 37 women.
The plant runs from an advanced Control Room with three times the amount of instrumentation and controls of a modern airliner.
Operating temperatures in some parts of the process exceed 1,000°C.
Operating pressure in some parts of the plant can exceed 100 times atmospheric pressure.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery was completed withworld-class safety performance
More than 277,000 hours was spent on safety training.
The total recordable incident frequency rate was 0.89 per million hours worked, significantly better than benchmark*.
The longest work period without injury was over 36 million hours, equal to one person working for more than 12,700 years.
There were zero fatalities during the construction.
*Benchmark: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics published data for heavy industry construction in 2017.

CONSTRUCTION
Construction took 72 million hours of work – equivalent to one person working for over 25,000 years.
Equipment and supplies came from 21 different countries.
More than 20 major contracting companies worked onAl Taweelah alumina refinery.
80% of the contracts by value were awarded toUAE-registered companies.
Expansion upstream in the aluminium value chain
Al Taweelah alumina refinery and our bauxite mining project in the Republic of Guinea expand EGA’s business upstream in the aluminium chain, transforming EGA into an integrated company delivering value from mine to metal.
Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is derived. Bauxite ore is refined into alumina, a white powder which is the feedstock for aluminium smelters. Smelting produces liquid aluminium, which is cast into the wide range of primary aluminium products which EGA supplies to our customers, semi-fabricators that are part of the supply chains of end user industries from aerospace to construction.
