Why the Project?

“In the field of renewable energy, the State of Kuwait

attached great concern to the diversification of its

energy sources, where the concerned entities started

the executive phases of an ambitious plan for using

wind and solar energy aiming to raise the percentage

of using this energy to 1% of the total energy usage in

Kuwait in 2015, and up to 15% in 2030.”

- H.H. Amir of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al

Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah - COP 18

Projects to Meet the Amir’s Vision

To meet The Amir’s vision, Al-Shagaya

Renewable Energy Park, comprising 3

phases, has been established near Al-

Salmi Road in West Kuwait. The three

phases are as follows:

Phase 1: KISR – 70MW. 50 MW CSP,

10 MW Solar PV, and 10 MW Wind

Phase 2: KNPC – Al-Dibdibah.

1,500MWAC. 100% Solar PV

Phase 3: Handled by KAPP. Capacity of

at least 2,000 MW. It will have Solar PV,

CSP, and wind Phase 1

Site

• Al-Dibdibah is an extensive gravel

plain. The plain is bounded on the

West by the the Wadi Al-Batin.

• The plain extends northward from

Saudi Arabia into Kuwait Dibdibah

plain

• Area: 32 sq. km within Al-Shagaya

Renewable Energy Park

• 100 km west of Kuwait City

• Latitude: 29.2o N; Longitude: 47o E

• GHI: 2,181 kWh/m2/year

8

About the Project

• The project will cause the reduction of approximately 2.1 million tons of CO2

equivalent emissions per year and cause fuel savings of approximately 6.2 million

equivalent barrels of oil per year

• The requirement is to generate 3,150 GWh in year 25 of operation within 32 sq. km

• This translates to an estimated capacity of around 1,500 MWAC

• It is estimated that around 6 million solar panels will be used

9

About the Project

• The project also comprises 5 Solar Generating Units (SGUs), including 5

substations connected to Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) Transmission

Substation

• The project comprises 160 km of Overhead Transmission Lines, all the way from

Al-Shagaya to MEW Power Station in Al-Subiya

• Power will be transmitted at 400 kV

10

About the Project

• Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KNPC and MEW

• The project is currently in the Bidding Stage

• Commencement to Commercial Operation: 24 months

• Operation and Maintenance: 25 years

• Kuwaitization of jobs will be applicable per Kuwaiti Laws to ensure Transfer of Knowledge
