WHY USE STEAMWHY USE STEAM

Higher heat content than hot water– @100psi steam = 2800 kj/kg– @100psi hot water = 720 kj/kg

Means smaller pipes can be used Means lower flow rates Means less weight needs to be supported

BUT We need a condensate return system

Page 3: Akvo why do we use steam

WHY BOTHER TO RETURN THE WHY BOTHER TO RETURN THE CONDENSATECONDENSATE

It is very hot– @15psi hot water contains 500kj/kg– @90 deg C hot water contains 380kj/kg– @10 deg C raw water contains 40kj/kg

It is almost pure– Reduces blowdown

Saves energy

– Reduces chemical needs Lowers oxygen content

– Minimises water costs

CONDENSTAE SYSTEM CONDENSTAE SYSTEM COMPONENTSCOMPONENTS

Steam traps– Thermostaic– Ball float– Thermodynamic– Liquid expansion

Sight glasses Strainers Air vents Receivers Pumps

LIQUID EXPANSION TRAPLIQUID EXPANSION TRAP

Contains an oil filled element to operate at preset temperature

Operates between 60 – 100 deg C

Must be installed with condensate discharge upright.

Page 6: Akvo why do we use steam

BALANCE PRESSURE TRAPBALANCE PRESSURE TRAP

Can be installed horizontally or vertically

Page 7: Akvo why do we use steam

FLOAT TRAPFLOAT TRAP

Maximum pressure 230psi

Should be fitted as close as possible to the item of plant requiring trapping.

Very effective at removing high loads of condensate under start up conditions

Page 8: Akvo why do we use steam

FLOAT TRAP WITH AIR VENTFLOAT TRAP WITH AIR VENT

Used where steam locking may be a problem.

Page 9: Akvo why do we use steam

INVERTED BUCKET TRAPINVERTED BUCKET TRAP

Designed for installation in vertical pipe work

Page 10: Akvo why do we use steam

BI-METAL STEAM TRAPBI-METAL STEAM TRAP

Can be installed vertically or horizontally.

Can be of a more complex design

Installed where pre-cooling of the condensate is required prior to discharge.

STRAINERSSTRAINERS•Designed to remove particulates ahead of steam traps.

•Must be cleaned out regularly.

•Available in a range of materials.

RECOVERYRECOVERY

•Collects condensate from traps.

•Automatic pump operation.

•Returns condensate to hotwell at low pressure.
