With the shortest day, and one of the

wettest winters on record finally

behind us, now is a great time to look

forward to the spring and summer, and

opportunities for taking a break or holiday

in the year ahead. I am particularly pleased

that in 2016 Southampton Airport has an

even greater range of new destinations and

new airlines to choose from. New additions

include Cork with Aer Lingus Regional,

Palma with Volotea and Amsterdam

with KLM. At the same time Flybe have

continued to increase their service

frequency on a number of key routes which

will no doubt be welcomed by both leisure

and business travellers alike.

Wherever you are flying this year I hope you

enjoy your journey through Southampton

Airport, the UK’s number 1 Airport according

to the 2015 worldwide air passenger survey

– Airport Service Quality.

Thank you for choosing Southampton.

We are extremely excited to

announce that our Charity of the

Year 2016 is Where There’s a Will.Where There’s a Will is a charity that

supports patients, as well as their

family and friends, whilst they are

on the General Intensive Care Unit

(GICU) at Southampton General

Hospital which is part of the

University Hospital Southampton

NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking forward to working

alongside Where There’s a Will

throughout the upcoming year

to raise valuable funds for their

wonderful cause.

2015 was a wonderful year for new routes and airlines at Southampton Airport. We welcomed VLM for routes to Antwerp and Hamburg and Aer Lingus Regional for a new route to Cork in the Republic of Ireland starting March 2016. We will also be the first airport within the UK to offer scheduled flights with Volotea to Palma starting May 2016 and will be welcoming Dutch airline, KLM, for flights to Amsterdam with worldwide connections again in May. (See page 6 for our map)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!Our airport terminal celebrated its 21st Birthday in

December. The terminal was opened in December

1994 by HRH Prince Andrew, The Duke of York. The

previous passenger terminal, which was originally built

in 1918, was demolished early the following year. It’s

been a brilliant 21 years for us and we made sure that

the terminal and all our staff celebrated in style with

some cake.

you will recognise Nichola as she

Must sees... Soller Railway

Take the train to Soller and step back in time by 50 years.

The vintage carriages of the train run 27 kilometres

along its narrow-gauge tracks through the beautiful

and unspoilt landscapes, villages, country stations and

scenic mountains down into the citrus valley where the

town of Soller is situated.

Cathedral Le SeuPalma's pride and joy has to be the cathedral - one

of the world’s finest and largest Gothic structures

surrounded by a maze of narrow streets of

ancient mansions and hidden squares. In front

of the cathedral is the Parc de la Mar with its

impressive fountains and sculptures.

Bellver CastleSet high on a hill and dominating the skyline

since the 14th century is Bellver Castle – the

only castle in Spain that is totally circular in

design. Built in 1309, the castle began as

a summer Royal residence and was later

used as a prison. Look out for the graffiti

on the walls, carved by French prisoners

of war.

Arab BathsA fascinating historical site, the

Banys Arabs highlights to what

heights the Arab culture and

architecture had reached during

the Middle Ages. Its graceful

colonnade and proportionate

architecture have attracted

many architects and history

lovers.

The art scene Now a hub of old town, the cobbled streets of Placa Major (often referred to as the “artist’s corner”) is home to a number of art galleries, an outdoor craft market and a vast range of bars and restaurants dotted around the edge of the square. If you’re in search of modern and contemporary art, head to the gallery and museum Es Baluard which displays works by Spanish modern artists. Located on the old Palma’s harbour side fortifications, it’s also the perfect spot for a sunset drink with the spectacular views of the harbour.

Fiesta time! If you time your trip around the national holidays, you’ll be able to soak up the old Spanish tradition of a fiesta where the city comes alive with exhibitions, side stalls and parades of local dancers dressed in traditional costume.

Food and drinkFrom the excellent local cuisine, tapas bars to speciality establishments and Michelin Star restaurants, Palma offers a gastronomical delight. the island is also renowned for its great wines …a Merlot or tempranillo to a Moscate or Prensal Blanc rest assured you’ll be able to accompany your dining experience with a suitably complementary, locally produced wine. And if you do want to sample the nightlife you’ll find a number of lively and trendy bars in the Paseo Maritimo area.

Shopping Amazing flea markets and organic food markets to artisan shops and designer boutiques, Palma is a hotspot for shoppers. AvingudaJaume III and Passeig des Born are the main areas with designer brands and boutiques while Placa Major is surrounded with small specialist shops.

Forget the images of the All Day English breakfasts and high rises of Magaluf, there is so much more to the picturesque island of Majorca. the sunshine city and capital of the Balearics, Palma, has palacios and promenades, beautiful beaches and beautiful people, chic restaurants and boutique hotels and yet has still managed to retain its old town charm with its lively art scene, rich historical attractions and ancient architecture.

Located on the south coast of Majorca, this cosmopolitan vibrant city offers a big-city experience on a small-town scale. With year round appeal and direct flights from Southampton Airport withVolotea in just under 2 and a half hours it’s a great destination that showcases the modern take on its ancient past. Around every corner is a quiet plaza to sit and watch the city’s world go by.

Almost half the entire

population of the Balearic

Islands live in Palma.

The island has been inhabited since 7000 BC

Spanish tennis legend Rafael

Nadal was born on the island.

The Majorca beaches are some of the

most visited in the world.

The average age in Majorca is 33

years old.

The building of the Le Sue

Cathedral began in 1230 and

continued for 400 years.

Average temp. of 21°C and

more than 300 days of sunshine throughout the

year.

It’s believed to have been founded

in the 19th century by the 7th

Duchess of Bedford, Anna, when it

was common to eat only two main

meals a day. She found herself

weakened with hunger pains each

day and therefore decided to take

tea and an afternoon snack each

afternoon and over time, it became

a common practise. Today, it’s

considered an occasional luxury

certainly a decadent way to spend

The restaurant boasts high ceilings and large

windows filling it with light. The mixed styles of the

furniture gives a rustic feel and adds real character

to its charming surroundings. The attention to detail

is superb, with fine china and fresh cut flowers on the

tables.

The menus offer a good selection of choice, whether

you are there to enjoy lunch or dinner. Head chef Jenny Jones uses freshly sourced produce and herbs

picked from the restaurant's very own garden. Creating food that is nothing short of exquisite, with

steak that will melt in your mouth, and desserts that

bar is perfect!

The Kings Head also offers eight rooms and one

suite, each a comfort away from home. Hursley itself

has been called home by a number of notable figures,

from bishops to royalty and the Cromwell family, and

while the rooms hold modern comforts we’ve also

paid homage to the inn and area’s rich history. The

Edward VI room was named so as that was who wore

the crown when Hursley was surrendered in 1552.

This particular room boasts a four-poster bed and

roll top bath, perfect for unwinding.

Being a building of history there are some hidden

treasures inside. Below the restaurant in what was

previously the cellar, is a function room complete

with skittles alley which is ideal for hosting a

celebration. You can also be in the safe knowledge

that the solid structure of the building means you

can celebrate as loud as you like!

Out the back of the building you’ll find the pub garden. With wooden furniture, palm trees and

strung lanterns, the atmosphere continues on

outside. The perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the

summer months, and heaters provided for the

cooler evenings. You will find it hard to believe you

are only 10 minutes from the nearest town.

A visit to The Kings Head promises an experience

traditional British comfort from the moment you

step foot in the door to the moment you leave.

Contentment is guaranteed. A complimentary glass of wine/beer/soft drink

with any main course when you mention The

Southampton Airport Breeze Magazine.

One of the jewels in the Emerald Isle’s crown, Cork is a beautiful and popular city break and it’s easy to see why; steeped in history,

surrounded by miles of spectacular coastlines and landscapes,

colourful villages, must-see activities, fairy-tale castles and

sumptuous restaurants serving an authentic taste of Ireland.

Cork Harbour is said to be the second largest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney Harbour in Australia.

The first factory that Ford Motor Company built outside of America was in Cork, where owner Henry Ford’s ancestors were from.

Cork got its nickname ‘The Rebel County’ due to a history of independence from the Viking invasions to the Irish War of Independence, when it was the scene of a considerable amount of fighting.

John F Kennedy’s great grandfather came from West Cork.

St. Colman’s Catholic Cathedral in Cobh has the

largest number of Carillon Bells in Ireland and the UK (49 bells).

Cobh - then known as Queenstown - was also

the ill-fated Titanic’s last port of call in 1912.

Sir Walter Raleigh is said to have planted

the first potato in Ireland near his home in Youghal, Cork around 1588.

CORK

Ireland’s second largest city is fast gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s hippest

and is only 1½ hours from Southampton Airport with Aer Lingus. Built on islands

in the River Lee, the many bridges give the city a continental feel with the Georgian

grandeur of its successful past. The birthplace of many a famous face from TV

personality Graham Norton, Roy Keane of Manchester United and Munster and

Ireland rugby player Ronan O’Gara, its ideal for both city sightseers and outdoor

enthusiasts and provides a fantastic base for exploring some of Ireland’s most

treasured attractions. Here are just some to kick start your sightseeing tour…

Soak up the history and cultureStep into the life of the city’s poverty stricken 19th century prisoners that were once

housed in the Cork City Gaol - many of them sentenced to hard labour for stealing

bread to eat. Bursting with historical and archaeological heritage, experience the

sights, sounds and smell of life on the wrong side of the law during the 19th century.

The three spires (and chimes) of St Finbarre’s Cathedral are one of Cork’s main

landmarks and can be seen, and heard, from all around the city. Step closer and

you will be in awe of the French-gothic architecture, step inside and you’ll see for

yourself that the interior lives up to the beautiful exterior.

Blackrock Castle is a 16th century castle that is now home to an observatory with

fascinating exhibitions on stars and space and an interactive floor-to-ceiling

screened tour of the universe, which is out of this world!

Immerse yourself in Ireland’s finest public art collection outside of Dublin at the

Crawford Municipal Art Gallery set in the elegant former customs house built in

1724. At the heart of the gallery lies the famous Canova Casts, a series of plaster

casts donated by the Vatican Museum to the Cork Society of Arts in 1818.

If you’re reading this as a business traveller on behalf of a FtSE100 company, the chances are your organisation has a direct corporate relationship with the airlines you fly on most often.

However, for many of us this isn’t a practical proposition and so most major airline groups have developed business reward programs which incentivise “undealt” companies for travel purchased.

These programs are in addition to the frequent flyer benefits enjoyed by individual travellers. Each scheme varies slightly and is administered differently, but the bottom line is that they are cost-free and can significantly reward companies with “free” tickets, upgrades, on-board wi-fi, hotel accommodation and more besides.

There’s no downside to joining these programmes...

They come with no real strings attached – there’s no revenue or market share commitment and no annual review. As long as your organisation has a company registration/VAT registration number and a couple of frequent flyer card carrying travellers, you can join. The process involves the nomination of a scheme administrator and a quick session of online form filling. Once enrolled you just need

to ensure that your membership number is added to every qualifying reservation.

At Amity travel Management we take care of this detail for our clients, consult with them in the administration of their scheme memberships and process “reward” bookings on their behalf. It’s all part of our one-stop service.

Below are some of the most relevant/popular programmes in the UK business travel market:

incentives from Southampton : AiR FRANCE/KLM - BlueBiz

BlueBiz goes hand-in-hand with the AF/KL FlyingBlue personal frequent flyer scheme. It not only earns “blue credits” for your company when employees fly with Air France or KLM. Membership also brings immediate cost savings on normally chargeable extras such as checked baggage. Blue credits can be converted

into tickets or upgrades. airfrance.co.uk

incentives from other airlines: BRiTiSH AiRWAYS - On Business

BA’s business frequent flyer plan is not only free to join, but is available to companies of all sizes. Travellers can also earn On Business points when flying with American Airlines and Iberia. Following a recent re-launch not only can businesses earn points to redeem against future reward, but

they can opt instead to take an up-front discount on air fare concerned. Individual travellers can still earn personal Avios and Tier Points as members of the BA Executive

Club. ba.com

LUFTHANSA GROUP PartnerPlusBenefit

This programme gives companies the opportunity to earn benefit points on up to 12 Star Alliance partner airlines including Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines. The scheme is free but a bit more “admin-heavy” (your friendly TMC can help you here) and SME businesses can redeem flights for free flights, upgrades, hotel vouchers and a number of other benefits including cashback.

ViRGiN ATLANTiC Flying Co

Virgin Atlantic’s corporate loyalty programme is free to join, is available to companies of all sizes, and miles are earned by both the business and the traveller through personal membership of the parallel Flying Club scheme. A minimum of four company travellers must be enrolled

for this one. virgin-atlantic.com

LEEDS & BRADFORD Head just 20 miles from the city and you can be exploring the rolling hills, and rugged moorland of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, perfect for walking and cycling enthusiasts. Or head out to the heart of Brontë Country in Haworth and learn of the contribution to English literature that the Brontë sisters bought to the area.

Heritage and CultureThe birthplace to famous artist David Hockney, Bradford is proud of its cultural heritage. With a thriving art scene, wonderful theatres, captivating exhibitions and rich history that comes to life with its Victorian architectural treasures, there is

so much to immerse yourself in. A visit to the Brontë Parsonage is also a must. The Parsonage was home to the Brontë family from 1820 and is now a beautifully preserved museum.

Family funThere is so much for the whole family to enjoy in Bradford. Enjoy days out at many of the free attractions including the National Media Museum, Cartwright Hall and Cliffe Castle Museum or burn off some energy at one of the delightful parks. Go wild in the adventure playground of Bingley St Ives, splash about at Ilkley Lido outdoor pool or simply play by the river in Roberts Park.

Stylish shopping As one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK, Leeds has become known as the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’ with its haven for shopping. The city centre has 3.5 million square feet of retail floor space, five miles of shopping streets and one of the country’s largest pedestrianised shopping areas. From big brand names under one, iconic, roof at the Trinity Leeds to the designer labels of the luxury mall of the Victoria Quarter. But if its independent fashion you are looking for then the Leeds Corn Exchange is the perfect shopping arcade for you - the beautiful architecture of this Victorian building is worth a visit if nothing else!

Food and DrinkThere’s certainly more on the menu than Yorkshire pudding and Wensleydale cheese…head to the Trinity Leeds and choose one of the 40 dining options there!

EntertainmentAs for entertainment, Leeds is definitely not short of things to do - even a trip to the cinema comes with a twist of excitement. The charming Victorian Hyde Park Picture House shows independent, international

and arthouse films in contrast to the Trinity centre’s Everyman Cinema, an independent boutique cinema complete with sofas! And for the vibrant music scene, look no further than Call Lane. Famous for its variety of choice from retro bars to underground clubs, you are guaranteed to find nightlife here any night of the week.

October 2015: Victoria Hansson (Costa) and Chris Winter (Security)Victoria and Chris were both on

hand recently after a passenger

starting having a fit in the main

concourse. Victoria put the customer

in the recovery

position and sat with her holding

her hand and reassuring her to keep

her calm. Chris then helped to guide

the ambulance crew to the correct

place at the airport and stayed well

past the end of his shift to do so.

Both members of staff stayed with

the passenger until she was taken to

hospital and went above and beyond

in both their roles in assisting her.

November 2015: Brent Griffiths (Swissport) A recent spell of

fog caused a

flight to Belfast

to be diverted

to Southampton

Airport, the flight

was then due to return

to another UK airport. Brent took it upon

himself to contact Flybe and request

that they put some of Southampton’s

passengers on it to ensure that they were

not delayed. Initially it looked as though

it could not be done but due to Brent’s

effort and determination, 70 passengers

managed to make it to Belfast with no

delay on a morning where many flights

were delayed.

At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping

to make our passenger’s journey as easy as possible.

September 2015 and overall winner of the year: Lauren Cashman (Flybe) We have chosen our Breeze Through Award winner of the year! After a flight delay, Lauren came into work on her day off to help operate the service to avoid it being cancelled. Not only did she help throughout the day but after the flight was diverted to Bournemouth she went to meet the passengers and travelled back with them on the coach to Southampton and ensured that taxis were booked for everyone. After an incredibly long day Lauren then stayed at the airport until nearly 3am to ensure that all passengers had departed the airport to make their journey home. Congratulations Lauren!

My tops tips for sightseeing:GREAT ViEWS Instead of taking the ferry

to Liberty Island and joining the queues of

people, we headed to Battery Park and took

the free Staten Island Ferry, we had a great

view of Downtown and the Statue of Liberty.

It was so simple; jump off one boat and

jump back on the return ferry!

BEST SKYLiNE views we chose the “Top

of the Rock” Observation Deck at the

Rockefeller Center. At 850-foot, the building

is shorter than the Empire State Building

but the views are just as breath-taking and

perfect to do when you first arrive as it gives

you the lay of the land plus the best view of

the monumental Empire State Building and

Central Park in all its glory.

iCONiC SKYSCRAPERS Walk across the

Brooklyn Bridge and look back at the

skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. It certainly

gave us a different perspective as we looked

back at the skyscrapers – something which

is quite hard to do as you walk around the

‘concrete jungle’. Once across the bridge,

we strolled around Brooklyn Heights and

into DUMBO – the area underneath the

two bridges where there are a number of

interesting shops, restaurants, art galleries

and arty venues. We recommend a hot

chocolate and a cookie from Jacques Torres

Chocolate (66 Water Street, Brooklyn) and

then to sit back in either Empire Fulton Ferry

Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park where you’ll

be greeted with fantastic views back across

Manhattan including both bridges. As we

were doing New York ‘our way’, we chose to

walk back into the city over the Manhattan

Bridge with beautiful views of Lower

Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge itself.”

UNExPECTED From the end of March

for two weeks the popular department

store Macy’s comes alive with spectacular

floral displays consisting of millions of live

flowers, plants and trees from around the

world – all which bloom in unison. A perfect

combination of shopping and flowers!

In the exciting ‘city that never sleeps’, we found a unique way to see

everything we had on our list. Think big and explore new areas. It’s a

metropolis with everything at your fingertips so be sure to venture far

and wide to see the best of it.”

ConneCting you to the worldAs well as direct flights to over 40 European destinations, you can fly to

100s of worldwide destinations from Southampton Airport with KLM.

There is no need to collect baggage or check-in again and most waiting times

between connections are short. There is also plenty to do in Amsterdam

Airport while you are waiting including a large selection of shops.

Big Lights great City

Breeze Magazine editor, Jo, shares with us her recent bite of the Big Apple – exploring this great city from a different perspective.

“Of course there are the must-see and must-do attractions when visiting the bright lights of New York such as standing in Times Square, a show on Broadway, the heights of the Empire State Building, the ferry trip to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty and not forgetting the poignant 9/11 Memorial honouring the memory of those who lost their lives in the attack at the World Trade Centre. The

list can be endless but we wanted to get away from the masses and really ‘feel’ New York.

has been witness to an explosion in the craft beer industry? A few years ago

a number of bar owners got together to create The Good Beer Seal which

Dear Southampton Airport,

Next month we have been married

60 years and for our Honeymoon

we went to St Helier Jersey and

had a wonderful week there. The

aeroplane we travelled on was

a Dakota and the runway was

grass with a strip of concrete. As

we started the flight a steward

sugar sweet to suck on in case of

sickness. We are so pleased to hear

on Radio Solent about how busy

you have been this past year.

Yours Truly,

Mrs M. McDonal

A local passenger recently wrote to us with some wonderful news that she and her husband were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and that they flew from Southampton Airport in 1955 for their honeymoon to Jersey.

Love is in the air

Mrs McDonald also sent us some

memorabilia such as their flight ticket

as well as the receipt from the duty free

shop and their taxi receipt for the journey

to the airport. They bought a musical box

and a Kershaw 110 Camera which came to

the total price of 2 pounds, 7 shillings and

6 pence. Congratulations to both Mr and

Mrs McDonald on their 60th anniversary

and we wish you many more happy years
