Thanks to the city’s favourable geographic position, Pulkovo Airport serves an extensive catchment area – almost 10 mln people:

 Greater St. Petersburg + region – 6.7 million Pskov + region – 0.6 million Novgorod + region – 0.6 million Petrozavodsk + region – 0.6 million Vologda + region –1.2 million

St. Petersburg was, and remains, Russia’s “window to Europe” and it is often described as the most Western city of Russia. Saint Petersburg borders with such European countries as Finland and Estonia. The dis- tance between Saint Petersburg and capitals of both neighboring countries, Finland and Estonia, is approximately the same: about 400 kilometers.

iDeAs BehinD the ProJeCtWithin the scope of a competition in 2007 British architectural bureau Grimshaw was chosen by the government of Saint Petersburg for performing design of Pulkovo Airport. The main effort was to create a landmark building by implementing some characters of Saint Petersburg as well as to improve passenger service quality.

Design was inspired by Saint Petersburg and its architecture. Ceiling of the arrival area is a reflection of water surface of the Neva river. Roof design and its angular structure was inspired by city historical buildings and gilded roofs of The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. Passages and corridors are designed to remind about channels and bridges of Saint Petersburg.

New terminal is constructed for people and will be a remarkable gateway for citizens and guests of the city.

New Pulkovo Terminal will start its opera-tions in December 2013.
