AIRLINE Design Norman Foster
Norman Foster is an architect who not only specialises in major international airports, but is also an expert in their interior design. He developed the AIRLINE waiting zone system together with Vitra.
ApplicationAIRLINE is a modular waiting zone system that is specially designed with the needs of airports and other public facilities in mind.
Basic ideaAIRLINE is based on an aluminium beam supported on legs made of cast aluminium. Seat and backrest elements, armrests, and tables can easily and quickly be mounted on the beam in the desired quantity.
ComfortThe shape of the seat surface and backrest of AIRLINE conforms to the shape of the human body and ensures healthy and comfortable sitting.
FlexibilityAll elements can be easily and quickly mounted and removed using a simple wrench. Thanks to the innova-tive construction, the modular elements do not have to be screwed onto the support beam, but are simply and safely clamped onto it. This means the configuration can be readily changed as needed.
VariabilityAIRLINE offers a wide selection of materials and upholstery fabrics so that it can be perfectly coordi-nated to the design of the surroundings. The use of the customer’s own upholstery fabrics is also possible after a thorough review of their quality and suitability.
Cleaning & careThe carefully selected, sturdy materials used in AIRLINE are characterised by highest quality craftsmanship. This minimises the time and costs required for cleaning and care.
Long product life AIRLINE easily withstands the exceptionally heavy wear of everyday use in the waiting zones and is designed for long-term use. Its longevity is confirmed by numerous tests conducted by independent institutions.
Security The understated formal design of AIRLINE communicates clarity and transparency. This increases passive security in airports: unattended objects like suitcases, bags, luggage trolleys, and the like can be easily spotted and removed.

AIRLINE Programme features
Waiting zone system, single rows or back-to-back; a configuration of seats facing opposite directions, mounted on a support beam is possible (kissing posi-tion). The system uses a triangular aluminium profile as the supporting element, anodised silver grey. Assembly of the individual elements (seats, backrests, legs, armrests, and tables) can be individualised using a modular principle. The legs are made of cast aluminium, coated in silver. Floor anchors are available on request. Seat and backrest are made of moulded maple ply; powder coated steel (with or without perforation); or freely supported polyurethane integral foam. Optional seat and backrest cushions can be added in artificial leather. The table top unit is made of unbreakable solid-core material, black, and can be flexibly posi-tioned. Three sizes, 300 x 500 mm, 500 x 500 mm, or as an occasional table with table top screwed on from below, 1130 x 565 mm. All materials are fire resistant. GS and BIFMA certification.
