If you're among the millions of American homeowners who've decided sprucing up the home you have is more cost-effective than moving into something newer or bigger, you may be looking for some easy ways to improve your living space. If you're not a seasoned do-it-yourselfer, you could consider calling in the pros - but that would fly in the face of your efforts at frugality. Transforming a room from floor-to-ceiling isn't as hard as it may sound, even if you're DIY-challenged. The job can be simple if you start from the ground and work your way up with these easy DIY tasks:Floors with flair Look down. What's on the floor under your feet? Are you happy with what you see? If you're living with stained carpet, shabby vinyl or hardwood that has seen better days, it's time to make a change. If you were a DIY diva, you could refinish those hardwoods, lay some new carpet or rip out that vinyl with your bare hands. But if you're a DIY newbie, you can change the look of your floor with a lot less effort and skill. Cover up crummy carpet with colorful area rugs and strategically arranged furnishings. Mask that vinyl that is so "last-decade" with easy-to-install, self-stick carpet tiles or vinyl tiles.

refinishing a hardwood floor may be beyond your skills, but virtually everyone can wield a paint brush and roller. simply paint tired wood floors in a neutral color - brown, tan, khaki or even white - to create a fresh-looking foundation for your room decor.

Walls that "wow" Painting is one of the easiest ways to freshen up a room, and painting walls really requires no special skills. Pick a new color you love - or simply freshen up the existing color. hit the paint store and ask the staff there for some tips on how to make the job go smoothly. Wallpaper is another great way to revive a room's look, but it's traditionally considered a job requiring some sophisticated DIY skills. Until now, that is. Mural-maker MuralsYourWay.com now carries a line of wallpaper murals that is virtually DIY foolproof. smartstick repositionable wall murals are backed with a patented adhesive that allows you to easily place the wallpaper on any flat surface (walls, windows, even doors), pull it down, reposition it, even move it to a different wall. The material does not rip or wrinkle and can even stand up to a trip through the washer and dryer. MuralsYourWay.com carries thousands of murals

that can all be printed on smartstick and customized to fit your wall exactly. Wall murals and wall paper are great ways to dress up a room, and now it's easier than ever to use this favorite technique of top designers.Ceilings that snap

When was the last time you looked up at your ceiling -- for any reason other than to change a light bulb? It's an area of room decor that often gets overlooked, but smart interior designers know ceilings have a big impact on how a room looks and feels. For your purposes, a little color experimentation can probably go a long way. Fortunately, many paint stores and home improvement warehouses now offer free brochures and paint chips that suggest subtle pairings of appealing wall colors with unexpected ceiling hues. Or, if you prefer to play it safe, simply repaint the ceiling white - it's one of the fastest, easiest ways to make a room feel bright and new. You don't need the DIY-skills of a home improvement show pro to upgrade your home and freshen your decor. You can get the job done with a few simple tricks and a weekend of elbow grease.

as one of the most infamous glass sculptors to date, Dale chilhuly’s work is displayed nationally from the Missouri Botanical garden in st. louis, Missouri, to the Bellagio hotel in las Vegas, nevada and across the world in places such as the ritz-carlton Millenia hotel in singapore and the Ukai Museum in hakone, Japan. from the moment one first glances at any of chilhuly’s sculptings, a captivating obsession takes over. The vibrant color and organic shapes flow so effortlessly as if the creations came from the hand of god himself. The vast static movement and bold contour displays a passion and ode to nature and takes hold of the audience no matter the scale of each piece. chilhuly truly impacts the world of art and continues to inspire every individual who comes in contact with his work. his pieces include glass sculptures that take the form of flared platters, bowl shapes, spirals, spears, large balloon shapes, large glass balls and log shapes. chilhuly’s creations are priced from a few

thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars. chilhuly’s achievements have influenced contemporary art in general with his practice of using teams to develop complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty and moving blown glass into the realm of large-scale contemporary sculpture. This practice establishes the” blown glass form” as an accepted vehicle for installation and environmental art beginning in the late twentieth century and continuing today. he has lived a life of prominence which began in Washington, D.c., in 1941 and despondently had gotten into an automobile accident where he was injured in the eye and led to a lack of perception for the artist. since the accident, chilhuly has played to role of designer and director of his glass creations. This is a role many prominent artists take on later in their career; however, chilhuly was pushed into shifting his role at the early age of 35 by adjusting and training a team who together create the preeminent glass art to date. The chance to view one of chilhuly’s artistic creations is one worth taking. from the renowned art historians to the everyday passer-by, his work will always hold a prominent place in world of art and the hearts of his viewers.

Each year, thousands of Americans take the leap and start a business, leveraging their expertise and passion for a particular interest or hobby. In fact, more than 600,000 new businesses are launched every year in the United States, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. If you're ready to turn your hobby into a business, it's essential, according to FindLaw.com, the world's leading online source for legal information, to do your research, build a business plan, tap the expertise of outside professionals such as an accountant and attorney, and keep good records to avoid the ire of the Internal Revenue Service. Through careful research and planning, you'll discover what the potential is for your business idea, and what pitfalls to avoid that may otherwise derail you from realizing your dream. Here are some tips for turning your hobby into a business from FindLaw.com: Research your idea. The very first step in turning your hobby into a business is to find out who will buy your product or service, how much they're willing to pay for it, how many of these people there are, and where they're located. It's critical to understand your "top line" - the sales potential for your product or service. get free help. Trial and error is an essential part of the entrepreneurial

experience. But making big, costly mistakes that have the potential of killing your business is something to be avoided. Tapping the experience of seasoned business professionals can help you avoid such mistakes, and provide you perspective in times of great stress. One piece of advice: find a mentor. If you're not comfortable finding one yourself, check out the Small Business Administration's SCORE program, a 12,000-strong, nationwide group of retired executives who volunteer their expertise to help small business owners grow and succeed. Write a business plan. Put your ideas on paper to test their viability and improve your chances for success. A business plan is a very useful tool - it gives you and others, such as your accountant, banker or attorney, a clear idea of your goals, the processes you'll implement to achieve those goals and how you'll measure your success. have a clear plan for funding. Whether you're financing your efforts out of your own pocket, or require capital from others to expand, you need to know where your start-up capital will come from (if you need it), whether you will be servicing a debt and what resources you can call upon in the future. Many entrepreneurs start with friends, family and people in their community to fund their initial efforts.

Know how you're going to bring in revenue. What you make, after all of your expenses and taxes have been paid, is your profit. It's the ultimate measure of your business' success. Before you decide to start a business, you need to project whether the revenues (sales of your product or services) will exceed your expenses. This will give you a clear idea of whether you should consider turning your hobby into a business. Set up your business structure. Contact an attorney who specializes in working with small businesses to get advice on the proper legal structure under which you should incorporate your business, or first visit FindLaw.com's Do-It-Yourself Legal Forms to learn more about how to incorporate your business. Incorporating your business can help protect your personal assets from liabilities like creditors or lawsuits.

Make it real. One of the advantages of starting a small business is that you can deduct losses such as your expenses and depreciation on assets you purchase - to offset taxable income. It's best to consult an accountant who specializes in small business to obtain advice on preventative measures you can take to avoid being audited. Some basic steps to take to clearly demonstrate you're in business, versus treating your efforts as a hobby, are to obtain federal and state tax identification numbers, print up business cards and letterhead, maintain a set of books to record sales and expenses, set up a separate bank account for your business and keep a logbook in your vehicle to record mileage. get the proper licenses and permits. Depending upon the type of business you start, you may need to get a permit(s) or occupational license from your city or state. Many cities and counties require every

business - even single-owner, home-based operations - to get a business license (tax registration certificate). You also may have to get a sales tax permit from your state. Protect your idea. In the course of pursuing your hobby, you may create a new process for doing something, a product or a creative brand name. If you think it has any potential, run - don't walk - to an attorney who specializes in intellectual property to seek a trademark or patent on your idea. Be very cautious about sharing your idea with anyone, who, in the future, could claim that he or she helped you with developing that idea and therefore deserves a cut of your revenues. Invest in a website. If you want people to know about your new business, you must have a website. Most people now immediately turn to the Internet to find products and services to meet their needs, as well as to find information such as

directions and contact information. Nearly equally as important, invest time to set up a Facebook and LinkedIn page for your business, advertise your services online through Google, and consider banner ads on other websites. Create a workspace. What are the space needs for your new business? Do you require storage space? Industrial strength refrigeration? Extra power? Two sewing machines? A quiet place to make uninterrupted phone calls? According to the Small Business Administration, more than half of America's small businesses are operated from a home, which offers important tax advantages. However, it's important to carefully follow IRS rules and clearly designate space for your business from personal space. About 4000 years ago, it was the accepted practice in Babylonia that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the "honey month" or what we know to day as the "Honey moon" Before invention of the thermometer, brewers used to check the temperature by dipping their thumb, to find whether appropriate temperature for adding Yeast. Too hot, the yeast would die. This is where we get the phrase " The Rule of the Thumb" In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender used to yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. From where we get "mind your own P's and Q's". After consuming a vibrant brew called Aul or Ale, the Vikings would go fearlessly to the battlefield, without their armor, or even their shirts. The "Berserk" means "bear shirt" in norse, and eventually to the meaning of wild battles.

Way down in 1740, the Admiral Veron of the British fleet decided to water down the navy's rum, which naturally, the sailors weren't pleased with. They nicknamed the Admiral Old Grog, after the still stiff grogram coats he used to wear. The term grog soon began to mean the watered down drink itself. When you are drunk on this grog, you are "groggy", a word still in use. The military still uses the word grog as part of a formal “dining in” (or soldiers only dinner) game. It used to insure appropriate manners at the dinner event and is a mix of symbolic items that are not necessarily pleasant to the pallet and thus become a deterrent for unruly behavior and entertainment for all those well mannered soldiers. Long ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim of their beer mugs or ceramic/glass cups. The whistle was used to order services. Thus we get the phrase, "wet your whistle".

As the temperature starts to warm, many Americans think about lacing up their running shoes or pulling out their tennis rackets. But don't let spring fitness fever corrupt your good judgment — if you haven't exercised all winter, it's better to ease into physical activity. Not sure where to start? Here are some tips: • Startslow.Attempting too much too soon will result in an

injury or "hitting a wall"— reaching a point where your body can no longer recover from exercise. It takes about three weeks for your body to adjust to a new exercise routine and about six weeks before you're ready for more aggressive activity. If you're running, start with exercising three days a week. If you're walking, you may be able to handle four or five days of exercise from the start. Increasing the duration or intensity of exercise by more than 10 percent each week puts you at a greater risk of injury, so be sure to progress gradually.

Fitn

ess

Page 21: Aire Magazine March 2011

March 2011 21

• Gettherightequipment. Wear clothes that wick sweat — you'll be much more comfortable. If you're a runner, proper foot gear will help your legs avoid unnecessary strain. Likewise, a well-fit bicycle can help cyclists avoid knee and other injuries.

• Don'tpushthroughpain. Most exercise injuries are overuse injuries, meaning they occur when athletes push their muscles, tendons and bones past their limits. One sign that you've reached your limit? Pain. If you experience real discomfort, it's better to take a few days off or see a doctor than risk worsening an injury. Of course, some muscle pain is perfectly normal for those starting up an exercise routine. Schedule recovery days -- days in which you either don't exercise or engage in very light activity -- to give your muscles a chance to rebuild between workouts.

If you experience routine muscle soreness, a topical product may help speed your recovery. For example, one product, Absorbine Jr. (www.absorbinejr.com), contains natural menthol

and herbal extracts. The liquid pain reliever creates a penetrating warmth to soothe sore muscles, aching joints, arthritis and back and foot pain. Because it increases blood flow to sore muscles, Absorbine Jr. actually helps muscles heal as it provides pain relief. Absorbine products were initially formulated to soothe the strong muscle pain in horses. This inspired Absorbine Jr. for humans.

Marnie's mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) reunites with her old high school enemy (Sigourney Weaver) who just happens to be the bride's aunt. So there you have it, two families with enough bad blood between the ladies to spoil any wedding. Inspector Bellamy When two giants of French cinema join forces, good things happen. Such is the case with “Inspector Bellamy” a provocative

crime drama staring Gerard Depardieu and directed by the European master of mystery and suspense, Claude Chabrol. Just released for home viewing by IFC Films, allows widespread access to one of France’s most famous fictional detectives. Decades of experience and a wealth of successes pave the path to this latest case of legendary crime-solve Inspector Bellamy (Gerard Depardieu). The mint family offers a mouth watering array of different types, such as pineapple mint, chocolate mint, apple mint, orange mint, not to mention spearmint and peppermint. With these refreshing scents and flavors to enhance your cooking, add to beverages, and use in potpourris, mint can be an indispensable plant. In addition, bumblebees and other pollinators are attracted to the delicate flowers that appear in mid- to late summer. Some varieties even sport variegated foliage for added interest in the herb garden. Mint's only downside is it will take over your garden if it gets half a chance. But you can contain its exuberance and keep it close at hand by growing mint in pots. And I do mean "pots" plural. With the array of varieties, it can be hard to choose just one. Or you can confine mint in a garden bed with edging of metal or plastic. Bury the edging to a depth of 14 inches around the perimeter of the mint patch.

A Sampling of Mints for Your Garden • Spearmint(Menthaspicata), with its

slightly sweet flavor, makes a refreshing tea, and can be used to highlight flavors in a fruit salad, or to add to new potatoes or grain pilaf. It's the mint of mint jelly, and is a key ingredient in mint juleps. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall, with pale pink or white blooms appearing in mid to late summer.

• Peppermint(Menthaxpiperita)is more pungent than spearmint, growing to 3 feet tall, with pinkish lavender flowers. It's a common ingredient in teas, especially for soothing the stomach.

• Corsicanmint(Mentharequienii)is a ground-hugging mint that prefers shade. It drapes over a container or weaves in between stepping-stones or in a stone wall.

Growing and Harvesting Mints Most mints can be started from seed, with the exception of peppermint, which is propagated by cuttings. Choose a sunny location (except for Corsican mint) with moderately fertile, humusy soil. Use a light mulch to retain moisture and keep leaves clean. Most mints are hardy to zone 3 or 4; Corsican mint is hardy to zone 6 so treat it as an annual in colder regions. Once plants are growing vigorously, you can harvest young or mature leaves. Don't be afraid to cut the plants back frequently

setting the stage for a good night's sleep

Page 27: Aire Magazine March 2011

March 2011 27

Parents of newborns can’t wait for the baby to sleep through the night, but sleeping through the night can be a problem for

children of any age, from birth through their teen years. Even naptime can present a challenge, with a number of daytime sounds and distractions preventing the baby from getting the uninterrupted sleep a parent hopes for. Sleep is vital to a child’s health and growth, but what can parents do to help promote quality sleep? While a child’s sleep-needs vary as they grow, there are two recommendations that remain consistent, no matter the child’s age. The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommends maintaining a regular bedtime routine and a sleep-friendly environment. “Three of the biggest influences on sleep are noise, temperature and light,” said Jonathan Sadinoff, spokesperson for LightCatcher Curtains, “so maintaining a sleep-friendly environment means controlling those elements as much as possible and keeping them consistent.” In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a cool, dark and quiet room as the best environment for sleeping. Here are some things you can do to make your child’s room sleep-friendly and help

them get the rest they need.Noise. Busy traffic, noisy appliances, or even the barking of neighborhood dogs can interrupt a child’s sleep. Children don’t need complete silence to sleep, but minimizing excess sound can help them fall asleep and stay asleep. The white noise of a fan or air conditioner can help block unwanted sound. Carpet, upholstery and blackout curtains can also absorb some of the ambient noise and make the room quieter. Temperature. There isn’t an ideal temperature for sleep — the point at which temperature conditions interrupt sleep will be different for everyone. But in most cases, the NSF says that temperatures above 75 degrees and below 54 degrees will disrupt sleep. A slightly cooler room contributes to good sleep because it mimics what happens when the body’s internal temperature drops to its lowest level during the night.Monitor your child’s room for temperature.

Rooms with more sun exposure tend to be warmer and may need a fan. Light. The human body is sensitive to light, even while sleeping. The Better Sleep Council (BSC) says that light, such as the rising sun, is a powerful cue to the body and can wake up the brain well before the alarm clock sounds. Keeping the room as dark as possible helps the body fall asleep naturally. The BSC recommends getting as much exposure to sunlight during the day as possible, and to block as much light as possible during sleeping hours to keep the body on track. Both the BSC and the NSF recommend the use of light

blocking curtains. Blackout curtains, such as those made by LightCatcher, can help turn the bedroom into the sleep sanctuary children need. Because traditional-width curtains can leak light from the top and sides, LightCatcher blackout curtains are cut wide, in over 50-inch widths, providing more light prevention. With exclusive Insuldark technology, these curtains also provide more sound dampening and more energy savings than traditional curtains, helping to keep the room not only dark enough, but cool and quiet enough for

good sleep. LightCatcher curtains are available at buybuybaby.com.

How Much Sleep Do They Need?

While there is variability between each of us in how much sleep we need, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has noted that the need for sleep changes as we age. The NSF has recommended the following sleep guidelines for selected age groups:

Newborns (0–2 months) 12–18 hoursInfants (3–11 months) 14–15 hoursToddlers (1–3 years) 12–14 hoursPreschoolers (3–5 years) 11–13 hoursSchool-Age Children (5–10 years) 10–11 hoursTeens (10–17) 8.5–9.25 hours

Unlike most of the other non-foolish holidays, the history of April Fool's Day, sometimes called All Fool's Day, is not totally clear. There really wasn't a "first April Fool's Day" that can be pinpointed on the calendar. Some believe it evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. Prior to that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved to January 1.

However, communications being what they were in the days when news traveled by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years. Others, the more obstinate crowd, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1. These backward folk were labeled as "fools" by the general populace. They were subject to some ridicule, and were often sent on "fools errands" or were made the butt of other practical jokes. This harassment evolved, over time, into a tradition of prank-playing on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the English and French. April Fool's Day thus developed into an international funfest, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of their friends and families. In Scotland, for example, April Fool's Day is actually celebrated for two days. The second day is devoted to pranks involving the posterior region of the body. It is called Taily Day. The origin of the "kick me" sign can be traced to this observance. Mexico's counterpart of April Fool's Day is actually observed on December 28. Originally, the day was a sad remembrance of the slaughter of the innocent children by king Herod. It eventually evolved into a lighter commemoration involving pranks and trickery. Pranks performed on April Fool's Day range from the simple, (such as saying, "Your shoe's untied!), to the elaborate. Setting a roommate's alarm clock back

an hour is a common gag. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his victim, "April Fools!" The Twenty Practical Jokes of All TimePractical jokes are a common practice on April Fool's Day. Sometimes, elaborate practical jokes are played on friends or relatives that last the entire day. The news media even gets involved.

The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest In 1957 the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss

farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in, and many called up wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti trees. To this question, the BBC diplomatically replied that they should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

Sidd Finch In its April 1985 edition, Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch and he could reportedly throw a baseball with startling, pinpoint accuracy at 168 mph (65 mph faster than anyone else has ever been able to throw a ball). Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the "art of the pitch" in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the "great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa." Mets fans everywhere celebrated at their teams's amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. But in reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the writer of the article, George Plimpton.

Instant Color TV In 1962 there was only one TV channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert, kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon-stocking over their TV screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in. Actual color TV transmission only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.

Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity In 1976 the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to occur that listeners could experience in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth's own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment that this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, BBC2 began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.

San Serriffe In 1977 the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement in honor of the tenth anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few

noticed that everything about the island was named after printer's terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that then gripped the British tabloids in the following decades.

Kremvax In 1984, back in the Stone Age of the internet, a message was distributed to the members of Usenet (the online messaging community that was one of the first forms the internet took) announcing that the Soviet Union was joining Usenet. This was quite a shock to many, since most assumed that cold war security

concerns would have prevented such a link-up. The message purported to come from konstantin Chernenko (from the address [email protected]) who explained that the Soviet Union wanted to join the network in order to "have a means of having an open discussion forum with the American and European people." The message created a flood of responses. Two weeks later its true author, a European man named Piet Beertema, revealed that it was a hoax. This is believed to be the first hoax on the internet. Six years later, when Moscow really did link up to the internet, it adopted the domain name 'kremvax' in honor of the hoax.

UFO Lands in London On March 31, 1989 thousands of motorists driving on the highway outside London looked up in the air to see a glowing flying saucer descending on their city. Many of them pulled to the side of the road to watch the bizarre craft float through the air. The saucer finally landed in a field on the outskirts of London

where local residents immediately called the police to warn them of an alien invasion. Soon the police arrived on the scene, and one brave officer approached the craft with his truncheon extended before him. When a door in the craft popped open, and a small, silver-suited figure emerged, the policeman ran in the opposite direction. The saucer turned out to be a hot-air balloon that had been specially built to look like a UFO by Richard Branson, the 36-year-old chairman of Virgin Records. The stunt combined his passion for ballooning with his love of pranks. His plan was to land

Page 35: Aire Magazine March 2011

the craft in London's Hyde Park on April 1. Unfortunately, the wind blew him off course, and he was forced to land a day early in the wrong location.

Nixon for President In 1992 National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation program announced that Richard Nixon, in a surprise move, was running for President again. His new campaign slogan was, "I didn't do anything wrong, and I won't do it again." Accompanying this announcement were audio clips of Nixon delivering his candidacy speech. Listeners responded viscerally to the announcement, flooding the show with calls expressing shock and outrage. Only during the second half of the show did the host John Hockenberry reveal that the announcement was a practical joke. Nixon's voice was impersonated by comedian Rich Little.

The Taco Liberty Bell In 1996 the Taco Bell Corporation announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell from the federal government and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called up the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell is housed to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed that it was all a practical joke a few hours later. The best line inspired by the affair came when White House press secretary Mike McCurry was asked about the sale, and he responded that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold, though to a different corporation, and would now be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

Alabama Changes the Value of Pi The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0. Before long the article had made its way onto the internet, and then it rapidly made its way around the world, forwarded by people in their email. It only became apparent how far the article had spread when the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. The original article, which was intended as a parody of legislative attempts to circumscribe the teaching of evolution, was written by a physicist named Mark Boslough.

The Left-Handed WhopperIn 1998 Burger king published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The

following day Burger king issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

15th Annual New York City April Fool's Day Parade In 2000 a news release was sent to the media stating that the 15th annual New York City April Fool's Day Parade was scheduled to begin at noon on 59th Street and would proceed down to Fifth Avenue. According to the release, floats in the parade would include a "Beat 'em, Bust 'em, Book 'em" float created by the New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle police departments. This float would portray "themes of brutality, corruption and incompetence." A "Where's Mars?" float, reportedly built at a cost of $10 billion, would portray missed Mars missions. Finally, the "Atlanta Braves Baseball Tribute to Racism" float would feature John Rocker who would be "spewing racial epithets at the crowd." CNN and the

Fox affiliate WNYW sent television news crews to cover the parade. They arrived at 59th Street at noon only to discover that there was no sign of a

Page 37: Aire Magazine March 2011

parade, at which point the reporters realized they had been hoaxed. The prank was the handiwork of Joey Skaggs, an experienced hoaxer. Skaggs had been issuing press releases advertising the nonexistent parade every April Fool's Day since 1986.

A Final Warning April Fool's Day is a "for-fun-only" observance. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their "significant other" out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It's simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant, for he may be the next April Fool!

CleveR DIggIng"hey Patrick, do i hear you spitting in the vase on the mantelpiece?" "no, nora, but i'm getting closer all the time!" an aging man lived alone in ireland. his only son was in long kesh Prison, and he didn't know anyone who would spade up his potato garden. The old man wrote to his son about it, and received this reply, "for heaVens sake, don't dig up that garden, that's where i buried the gUns!!!!!" at 4 a.M. the next morning, a dozen British soldiers showed up and dug up the entire garden, but didn't find any guns. confused, the man wrote to his son telling him what happened and asking him what to do next. his son's reply was: "Just plant your potatoes."

"he's due to fly in from america in an hour's time. it's his first trip home in forty years". "Will you be able to recognize him?" asked the american. "i'm sure i won't," said the irishman, "after all, he's been away for a long time". "i wonder if he'll recognize you?" said the american. "of course he will," said the irishman. "sure, an' i haven't been away at all".

with a cocked hat and a leather apron. according to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They also possess a hidden pot of gold. Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. if caught, he can be forced (with the threat of bodily violence) to reveal the whereabouts of his treasure, but the captor must keep their eyes on him every second. if the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun (and he often tricks them into looking away), he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

The BlaRneY STOneThe Blarney stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney castle tower in the irish village of Blarney. kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney). The castle was built in 1446 by cormac laidhiv Mccarthy (lord of Muskerry) -- its walls are 18 feet thick (necessary to thwart attacks by cromwellians and William iii's troops). Thousands of tourists a year still visit the castle. The origins of the Blarney stone's magical properties aren't clear, but one legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly. it's tough to reach the stone -- it's between the main castle wall and the parapet. kissers have to stretch to their back and bend backward (and downward), holding iron bars for support.
