Jesus said to his disciples: "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Imagine the joy, the thrill, the hope – the wheels of imagination spinning in the person’s
head who finds a buried treasure – and then realizes that the field it is buried in is in fact for sale! Like knowing you have a set of winning lottery tickets; amazing. Is it worth, “All that he has”? In Jesus’s story, it is the case.
Every year my family and I go up to the Adirondacks for a week. It is truly a treasure – time spent eating, swimming, playing kickball, hiking, going to a drive-in, watching fireworks, go carts, (and playing guitar with some wine around a campfire). It’s a treasure – but the real treasure of spending time in the Adiron-dacks is spending time together. It’s worth saving paychecks and vacation time for.
In the Gospel, Jesus’ parable works both ways – He is inviting us to see that He, and a full life of living faith – is worth making time for, worth prioritizing, worth stepping into. It’s worth whatever we have to give up to find. And, at the same time, the parable also works from his perspective towards us: For Him we are the treasure in a field. It is worth him giving up his life to “buy that field”. Another word for “buy” is “redeem”.
You are worth the cost; you are his treasure.
In Christ,
(I’ll see you in September. Thanks to Bob and Jenn Brogan who courageously volunteered to write these articles in Au-gust while I and Cragly are away. You’ll love their insights, wit, and wisdom about marriage and family life. ps. . Go Vi-kings!)

“Worldly people often purchase hell at a very dear price by sacrificing themselves to please the world.” – Blessed Henry Suso
Faith at Home: Are we teaching our children to give in to worldly desires or to give their all in a desire for holiness and eternal life with God?
CCD 2017-2018: Class assignments have been made and special requests were due by May 31 and can no longer be considered. Classes which have been closed so far are: Sunday Levels 3, 5, 6 and 8.
CCD Schedules for 2017-2018 are available on the parish website. Mark your calendars, and print copies for coaches, teachers, etc. so they know when your child will be unavailable. Re-mind them that faith formation has eternal re-wards.
Level 1 Orientation for Level 1 students and their parents is on Saturday, August 1 at 10am. Spread the Gospel of Jesus! Volunteer catechists and classroom aides are needed for our CCD classes beginning in September. Aides are needed for Levels 2 and 3. Subs are needed for all levels.
“For we are his handiwork, created in Jesus Christ for the good works that God has prepared in ad-vance, that we should live in them.” - Ephesians 2:10
This is the Scripture theme for Mission Jersey, our weeklong service retreat, taking place this week. Please pray this verse and keep the ap-proximately 75 Ocean County youth partici-pants in your prayers this week, as well as the many adult chaperones and helpers. The youth will be divided into groups, called families, and each group will spend a day at a different worksite, including weeding and harvesting at a working farm that donates their produce to soup kitchens and pantries; Atlantic City Rescue Mis-sion warehouse where they will sort clothes col-lected from donation bins; work at one of 2 soup kitchens; and work at the Community Food Bank of NJ Southern Branch, which has a warehouse the length of 3 football fields. They will sort food here. This food bank donates food to one of the soup kitchens where we will work. Each day will begin with Mass and nights will include commu-nity building activities, reflection and prayer, as well as recreational activities.
Teen RCIA: Are you a high school student or par-ent of one who for whatever reason did not re-ceive Confirmation with your class and you would like to receive the sacrament? Or perhaps haven’t received Baptism or first Holy Commun-ion? Or are not Catholic but you’re considering joining our faith? Please get in touch with me to discuss your next step.
