Aim:How is the human skeletal system organized?

Page 2: Aim: How is the human skeletal system organized?

What are the functions of the skeletal system?1. provide shape & support2. aid in movement3. produce red blood cells4. protect vital organs

• Skull – brain• Ribs – heart and lungs• Vertebrae – spinal cord

5. Store minerals (calcium & phosphorus)

Page 3: Aim: How is the human skeletal system organized?

What are the three parts of bone?1. MEMBRANE

- repairs injuries, attaches to muscles2. BONY LAYER

– bone cells. Minerals help keep them hard

3. MARROW – soft tissue that produces blood cells

How are bones held together?- by CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Page 4: Aim: How is the human skeletal system organized?

What are the types of connective tissue?1. CARTILAGE – soft tissue between bones, acts as a cushion- strong, flexible, & very slickEx: disks between vertebra2. LIGAMENT – tissue which connects 1 bone to another.Ex: collateral ligaments in knee3. TENDONS – tissue which connects a muscle to a boneEx: Achille’s tendon in ankle

What is a joint?- The area where 2 bones meet.

What are the different types of joints?

1. FUSED/FIXED/IMMOVABLE – no movements, bones are fused togetherEx: cranium, pelvis

2. BALL AND SOCKET- Allows movement in all

directions- Ex. Hip, Shoulder.

3. HINGE Joint– one way movement back and forthEx: knee, elbow

4. PIVOT- turn side to side ( rotation around a

point).Ex: neck

Page 9: Aim: How is the human skeletal system organized?

5. GLIDING – little movement, bones slide over,

around each otherEx: vertebrae, ankles, wrist
