Human ReproductionIn order to aid our reproductive

processes, the human body has two major anatomical

adaptations:1.Reproductive System

2.Endocrine System

Male Reproductive System# Organ Function

A Testicle Sperm and testosterone production; surrounded by scrotum for protection

B Seminal Vesicle

Produces surgary liquid to add to sperm to make semen

C Vas Deferens

Transports sperm away from the testicles to the urethra

D Bladder Stores urine and releases it to the urethra

E Prostate Gland

Same as Seminal Vesicle

G Penis Protective Covering for the urethra

H Urethra Transports semen and urine OUT of the body

Female Reproductive System

# Organ Function

A Ovary Site of egg production; produces progesterone and estrogen

B Oviduct Site of fertilization; Transports embryo to uterus

C Uterus Site of embryonic/fetal development

D Vagina Birth Canal

E Cervix Barrier between uterus and vagina

Sexual Reproduction:

23 + 23 46

Sperm

Egg Zygote

A fertilized egg cell is called a Zygote

Characteristics of Sexual Reproduction:

1) Is the creation of a new individual from parents.2

2) Offspring are not genetically to the parents.identical

Fertilization

INTERNAL FERTILIZATION•Eggs and sperm meet inside the female’s body

•Few eggs, many sperm

•Occurs in most land organisms

•Ex. Reptiles, birds, mammals

EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION\

•Eggs fertilized outside female’s body

•Occurs mostly in aquatic environments

•Many eggs, many sperm

•Ex. Fish, amphibians

•HAZARDOUS – Eggs and sperm may not meet, they may be eaten or environmental conditions may change

Embryonic DevelopmentAn embryo is a developing offspring. Development can be either INTERNAL or EXTERNAL, depending on the organism.

INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT

• Embryo develops inside the female, placenta provides nourishment

Where does fertilization in humans usually occur?

• Fertilization occurs in the oviduct

What is the pathway that the sperm travels to reach the egg?

• Vagina

• -> Cervix

• -> Uterus

• -> Oviduct (Fallopian Tube)

How many eggs are released a month by a female?

Normally one, sometimes two

Ovulation

What happens after fertilization?

Zygote begins mitotic cell division to form an embryo which will travel and implant itself in the lining of the uterus
